From draft dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between sordid scandal and grand achievement. In Clinton, the latest installment in a critically acclaimed collection of presidential biographies, American Experience explores the fascinating story of an American president who rose from a turbulent childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters ever to stride across the public stage.

The film follows Clinton across his two terms as he confronted some of the key forces that would shape the future, including partisan political warfare and domestic and international terrorism, and as he struggled, with uneven success, to define the role of American power in a post–Cold War world. Most memorably, it explores how Clinton’s conflicted character made history, even as it enraged his enemies and confounded his friends. Clinton also features unprecedented access to scores of Clinton insiders, including White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers, White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta (current

Secretary of Defense), former Senator Trent Lott and Deputy Chief of Staff Harold Ickes, as well as interviews with dozens of journalists, members of the Republican opposition, childhood friends, staffers from Clinton’s years as governor of Arkansas and biographers. “William Jefferson Clinton is a lightning rod in American history,” notes Samels, “It’s hard to find anyone who is neutral about the man or his presidency. The complex dynamic between his public accomplishments and his personal foibles makes him endlessly fascinating,”

“ At American Experience we like to explore the people who have shaped the times in which they live, and Bill Clinton, both charismatic and confounding, certainly had a profound effect on the country during his presidency.”

—Mark Samels, Executive Producer

High School Musical on stage, the farewell tour of the Beaux Arts Trio and jazz pianist Omar Sosa. So from the start we’ve tried to mix pop culture and the high arts. In 2012 we hope to have a more dynamic website with room to feature artists and events that don’t make our on-air Friday list.

What are some of the most memorable events you’ve featured?Last fall we aired a wonderful Do List special on Forum featuring conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and soloist Yo Yo Ma talking about the San Francisco Symphony’s 100th anniversary season. We also interviewed Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison about The Desdemona Project (at Cal Performances), featured music from the Oh Sees, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (yes, that’s a hip-hop group) and Booker T. and the MGs, and presented a discussion of a Rodin show at Stanford’s Cantor Art Museum. I’m pleased we were able to offer listeners such a diverse list.

What does David Wiegand bring to The Do List?David brings a taste for all kinds of music—from cabaret to hip-hop to classical. And he’s a very funny man. At the Chronicle he writes profiles and reviews with equal aplomb (he’s now the Chronicle’s television critic too), and he brings that same wide-ranging approach to The Do List. Producer Suzie Racho is also an essential part of our team. She chooses all our music cues, and she knows about all the local (and touring) rock, hip-hop and pop bands. We have help as well from engineers Howard Gelman and Ceil Muller.

What are you hoping listeners get out of The Do List?In any given week, we hope listeners will learn about at least one new performer or show. I think the role of critics and shows like ours is to open people’s eyes to the variety of cultural delights. The Bay Area is such a delightful place to live.

How did The Do List get started? The Do List is a revival of sorts. David Wiegand started the segment back in 1996 or so with KQED’s David Wright, at the time our morning news anchor. We didn’t have a name for it back then, but it was clear David Wiegand was wonderfully funny and informative talking about the local arts and music scene. In early 2008, an editor at the Chronicle began talking to Jo Anne Wallace, KQED’s vice president and public radio general manager, about a new arts roundup. Jo Anne asked me to co-host. We debuted The Do List (David came up with the name) on April 18, 2008.

How do you decide what to preview?David, our producer Suzie Racho and I typically start with a very long list of pos-sible subjects. In making our selections, we try to find interesting events all around the Bay Area and to mix music, theater and the visual arts. We often avoid shows by the most famous artists—they don’t need the publicity. More often we try to feature local bands, theater groups and other events that might get overlooked in the rush to the next big arena rock show. We also look for items that are just odd and quirky and fun to talk about. That first 2008 show featured Disney’s

Discover New Music and More

The Do List airs at 8:33am Fridays on KQED 88.5 FM and at kqed.org/listen.You can also find it at kqed.org/thedolist.

Chances are good that you discover something new when you listen to KQED Public Radio. It might be a unique perspective on international affairs or insightful coverage of a Bay Area issue. Or it might be the harmonies of a local musician played for the first time on the radio on The Do List.

Co-hosted by KQED’s Cy Musiker and the San Francisco Chronicle’s David Wiegand, The Do List previews a diverse array of local entertainment events, from concerts by local bands to art shows and plays. Cy recently answered a few questions about the program.

KQED, in partnership with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, ITVS and Top Ten Social, invites you to at-tend free screenings of two powerful new films: The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 and The Interrupters. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Swedish television journalists came to the United States to document the burgeoning black power movement. This long-lost trove of film, combined with contemporary interviews, creates an irresistible mosaic chronicling the movement’s evolution. Black Power Mixtape features interviews with seminal black power leaders, including Stokely Carmichael and Eldridge Cleaver, as well as author-activist Angela Davis. Using an innovative style that riffs on the popular 1970s mixtape format, this is a cinematic and musical journey into the black communities of America. During one weekend in Chicago in 2008, 37 people were shot, 7 of them fatally. Frontline follows a group of older

former gang leaders trying to “interrupt” shootings and protect their communities from the violence they once commit-ted. From director Steve James (Hoop Dreams), The Interrupters is a compelling observational journey into the stubborn, persistent violence that plagues our American cities. PodcastsWNYC’s Radio Lab has a way of making science sound amazingly intriguing and accessible. I listen to KQED’s Noise Pop for the latest on the music scene and to help me feel “in the know,” and I like KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic for its blend of in-studio sessions with musician interviews.

KQED.org I’m a fan of The Writers’ Block, because who doesn’t like to be read to? I love that San Francisco is such a hub of indie filmmakers, and the “Truly CA Shorts” podcast show-cases their short docs. KQED’s video player (video.kqed.org) lets me watch national PBS programming from my computer or mobile device—at any time!

TelevisionMasterpiece—I love, love Downton Abbey. I studied art in college and am an art geek, so I have to also pick Art 21 and Spark. Sewing is one of my hobbies and I find the tips on Sewing with Nancy very helpful. Nature lets me watch animals in their own habitat—from the comfort of my own home. And who doesn’t love Sesame Street (even as an adult)?

RadioThe stories told on This American Life always make me think about how wacky life is. I love how Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me! uses humor to keep me informed on current events, and I appreciate the diver-sity of topics covered on Forum.

Moyers & CompanySaturday, 2pm Bill Moyers returns to public media with a

weekly hour of compelling and vital conversa-tions about life and the state of American democracy, featuring some of the best think-ers of our time.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Should the UN Accept Palestine as a Full Member State?Wednesday, February 1, 8pm and Saturday, February 4, 1pm For the Motion: Mustafa Barghouthi, former

Palestinian National Authority presidential candidate; Daniel Levy, former Israeli govern-ment negotiator and J Street co-founder.

Against the Motion: Dore Gold, former Israeli U.N. ambassador and advisor to PM Netanyahu; Aaron David Miller, former U.S. Mideast negotiator and advisor to Republican and Democratic secretaries of state. (Panel-ists subject to change.)

Moderator: John Donvan. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—Assassination and Legacy Thursday, February 2, 8pm This final program in a Canadian Broadcast-

ing Corporation (CBC) series about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. covers the reaction to his death and some thoughts about his legacy. It begins with a CBC news special from April 4, 1968.

State of the Re:Union with Al Letson Al Letson travels the country to find compel-

ling stories of community and tell them with honesty, perspective and deep curiosity.

Southern Wyoming Wednesday, February 8, 8pm and Saturday, February 11, 1pm Wyoming is the least populous state in the

country. In this sparsely populated landscape where private property and self-sufficiency are prized, community is built on the (some-what unwelcome) expectation that distant neighbors might need to rely on one another one day. When people come together here, they have to have good reason to. This episode will bring listeners to the towns of Laramie and Cheyenne and the surrounding landscape in southern Wyoming, looking at how the things that happen in the small towns and countryside of rural America can change the country as a whole.

RISE: Climate Change and Coastal Communities This three-part program addresses the

impact of climate change and serves as a model for coastal communities from Manhattan to Los Angeles and beyond.

For the most up-to-date program schedule information, check kqed.org/radio.

Radio Specials and Additional Program Highlights

Program Three: Chuey’s StoryThursday, February 9, 8pm Chuey’s Story introduces us to a single com-

munity and family. While adaptation to cli-mate change is necessary, it will not be easy. And in the process, there will be winners and losers.

State of the Valley 2012—Presented by Joint Venture Silicon Valley Network Wednesday, February 15, 8pm Keynote speakers this year are former

Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley and author-professor Michael Mandelbaum. Three panel discussions will explore the fiscal future for Silicon Valley and California, Silicon Valley’s role in the greening of America’s cities, and arts, culture and creativity in Silicon Valley.

Latitudes—Local Voices, Global Stories The stories in this program are unexpected,

rich in sound and riveting—they engage the intellect, the conscience and the imagination. They feature people who are finding con-structive solutions to some of life’s toughest challenges.

EnergyThursday, February 16, 8pm This week, we look at pure energy—the

power that doesn’t come from oil. More and more, people around the world are inspired to tune in and turn on to alternative energy sources. They’re reaching for the sun, for unexpected bounties on Earth and, more often than not, for each other to power the planet. We’ll hear from the Middle East, the Philippines, Burma and South Africa—tune in for a burst of energy.

Rubin Carter’s HurricaneSaturday, February 18, 1pm Rubin “Hurricane” Carter is an African Ameri-

can ex-boxer who was wrongly convicted of a triple homicide, then exonerated—after 19 years in prison—in a ruling affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. The judge who freed him (interviewed for this program) cited racial bias in the prosecution.

In this story, based on Carter’s new memoir, Eye of the Hurricane, we hear how he transcended the “inner prison” of hatred, self-hatred and playing “the victim.”

America AbroadEurope in Crisis: From Athens to Rome Wednesday, February 22, 8pm and Saturday, February 25, 1pm This edition of America Abroad heads to the

front lines of the European debt crisis to ask, “How did we get here?” In Rome, we talk to people who are daring to question the profes-sional caste system that is hampering growth. And we travel to the mountains of northwest

Greece to speak to those who have benefited from EU funding—and are now feeling the pinch. We also explore the evolution of the European Union over 60 years, from a basic agreement on sharing coal and steel among a few states after World War II to the economic and political union we know today.

The Computer History Museum Presents: An Evening with Google’s Marissa MayerThursday, February 23, 8pm Marissa Mayer is the vice president of Local,

Maps and Location Services at Google. She oversees product management, engineer-ing, design and strategy for the company’s suite of local and geographical products, including Google Maps, Google Earth, Zagat, Street View and local search, for desktop and mobile. She also curates the Google Doodle program, celebrating special events on Google’s homepage around the world. Join NPR correspondent Laura Sydell for a wide-ranging conversation with Marissa Mayer.

Nature Ocean GiantsWhales and dolphins, known as cetaceans, may seem to be totally alien to us—but with their mental ability, group communication and the recent discovery that dolphins have individual names, they are closer to us than we ever imagined. With two of the world’s top underwater cameramen— Doug Allan and Didier Noirot—filming breathtaking encounters, this new Nature program offers insights into the lives of whales and dolphins in three visually powerful, engaging and entertaining episodes (airing back-to-back this month).
