As we celebrate Tu B'Shevat, our "New Yearfor Trees" on February 9, we recognize the

importance of protecting the environment, and the need to begin right in our ownhomes and on our beautiful CBI campus.

As I write this we are putting finaltouches on plans for our third annualEnvironmental Fair - Live Green! - to takeplace February 1 at CBI. With a film anddiscussion panel, farmer's market, onsiterecycling, landscape designer consultationsand many exciting exhibitors and activities, this annual event highlights what each of uscan do to benefit the planet. In the coming

year, as we put what we learn into practicewe will also see changes taking place at CBI.

Last spring, at the recommendation of theSocial Action Committee, CBI requested anenergy audit from SDG&E. The resultingsuggestions gave us a starting point tobecome more energy efficient. Staff isimplementing energy efficiency changes inseveral major ways. The first is changingincandescent bulbs throughout thesynagogue to fluorescents. New fluorescentshave been installed in the conference room,

THE GREENING OF CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL

elevators, social hall andsanctuary sconces, lobby

downlighting and exteriorwall lighting. Thesecond change is to add

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)to the water pumps that circulate the

chilled water for our HVAC system (airconditioning unit). The VFDs enable thesystem to work less if there is less work todo. Currently our drives work on a simpleon/off control. This works fine when all

rooms are in need of cooling, but if only 1or 2 rooms need cooling, a lot of energy iswasted because the water is sent throughoutthe whole building. The VFDs are scheduledto be finished by the end of February.

Both the fluorescent bulb installation andthe VFD installation will save on energyusage and extend the life of the equipment.Significant rebates from SDG&E will help tooffset the cost of the new equipment. Inaddition, attractive and descriptivereceptacles to encourage recycling are beingpurchased.

We continue to explore ways to green ourcampus and reduce our carbon footprint. As always, we welcome your ideas andsuggestions.

The Wonderful, the Versatile Jessica Kretzer!

By Michelle BerkowitzOur religious school students are thrilledwhen they learn that they can be inJessica Kretzers class in 4th, 7th, 8th andCBI High. Jessica has been teaching inour Religious School Program for threeyears and brings Judaism to life in a waythat engages her students and gives themconfidence in their Jewish knowledge.Young or "old," our students always greetJessica with a warm smile or a hug.

In 4th grade, her students learn aboutTorah and Israel. They become well-versed in the weekly parasha and thecities, politics and people of Israel.

The Religious School students will be

participating in the Environmental Fairthis year. What will the nextenvironmental consciousness raisingexercise look like? What, simply put, willbe necessary to save our planet?

Very often theology develops in responseto social/political circumstances. Whenthe Temple was destroyed by the Romansand there was no longer a place to offersacrifices, the Rabbis developed the ideaof a God who wants to hear prayers, notsmell sacrifices. When we were thrownout of Spain in 1492 and our social worldcollapsed, our Rabbis added the conceptof tikkun olam, the repair of the world,to our theological repertoire. Now weneed new theological ideas to respond tothe environmental crisis.

At one time - in order to protect the earth- it was enough to teach that we should

all tend our garden like Adam. It may

not be enough now. At one time - inorder to motivate us to action - it wasenough to say that we are Gods partnerin repairing the world. It may not beenough now. What is required now is atheology of urgency that includes a moreaggressive vocabulary to confront theglobal crisis. Our children must seethemselves as Gods armed forces, soldiers in a battle against time. Ourchildren must mobilize and organize amilitary-like campaign to fight to savethe earth. It is not enough to teach ourchildren to tend the beautiful earth, so

that they view themselves as friendlygardeners lovingly watering the flowers. We are irresponsible if we do notcharacterize the global crisis as just that a crisis - choosing appropriate metaphors, analogies and symbolism to express theurgency which is necessary to survive.

    We have some appropriate teachings

already. Said Rabbi Levi ben Hiyyataabout the connection between a balancednatural order and human survival: ...without earth, there is no rain, andwithout rain, the earth cannot endure, and without either, humans cannot exist(Genesis Rabbah, 13:3) But we need more.We need a theology that connectsindividual responsibility, the commonfate of all living creatures and urgentaction.

Where to start? At Temple withreligious education. The inculcation ofvalues and beliefs is the first step and thebest hope for our survival.

    Lshalom,

Rabbi David KatzDirector of Congregational Learning

Religious Educuation and the Survival of Life

Jewish AmericanHistory is a core component

of the three trimesterswhich make up 7th grade. Our students are on thebrink of a Bar or BatMitzvah. It is importantthat they know where ourpeople come from so theycan decide what role they

want to play in our peoples future, saysJessica.

In 8th grade, Jessica teachesComparative Religions. Students examinea wide variety of religions, asking questions, challenging the thought process of

religious perspectives and participatingin discussions and debates.

This year, Jessica introduced a newelective into our high school program:Images of God. Students explore howmodern music, movies and literaturedepict God and relationships with God.They dissect why we look for images ofGod and what Judaism has to say abouteach representation we find in variousmedia: cartoons, movies, radio and books.

Jessica is from Texas where her familystill belongs to Congregation Beth Israelof Houston. She worked for five years as amadrichah (teacher's aide) there while amiddle and high schooler. She earned aBachelor's degree in deaf education at theUniversity of Texas at Austin, and taughtfifth grade religious school at Austin'sCongregation Beth Israel. Jessicarelocated to San Diego in 2004 andreceived her Master's degree in DeafEducation from San Diego State University.

When notteaching at BethIsrael, Jessicateaches deaf

students withmulitple handicapsand special needsat Madison HighSchool. She marriedMark Rubenshtein in May 2008.

We are so lucky to have Jessica on ourteaching staff and at all levels of CBIsReligious School.

BITY has a new addition to the youth

group: a pig. BITY's pig, however, is

not real but a recycled water jug in

the shape of a pig that is being used

as a tzedakah box. The pig's debut

came last year at a BITY event on the

environment. It is now being used to

hold money BITY is raising in support of

NFTY's Nothing But Nets campaign. Nothing But

Nets is an organization that works to prevent

malaria through the distribution of bed nets

    (For more information visit: www.

    nothingbutnets.org). Malaria affects 500

million people worldwide, and the 10

bed nets that BITY's fundraising will

pay for, will make a small

    difference in that number. BITY

has raised $71.50 towards this effort,

but we want to reach our goal of $100. Come by the

Novak Youth Lounge and help us fight malaria!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS BRIEFINGBy Judi Schwarz

A sub-committee is reviewing thebylaws of Congregation Beth Israel torecommend any appropriate languagechanges. The last major review of thebylaws occurred approximately 10 yearsago. The board discussed some of the

potential bylaws changes identified bythe sub-committee. The sub-committeewill now consider the boards input and

will present its final recommendations at a future meeting. Anychanges to the by-laws that are approved by the board would besubject to approval by the congregation in a vote at the AnnualMeeting in May.

In response to a board members question, Treasurer andPresident-elect Ron Simon announced that CBIs endowmentfund was not invested with any institutions affected by theMadoff scandal. Our funds are invested through the JewishCommunity Foundation (JCF). The Bank of New York-Mellonacts as trustee for the funds invested by the JCF. JCF employs an

independent advisor that assists JCFs investment committee inselecting investments for the JCF funds. CBIs investments areapproximately 2/3 in stock mutual funds and 1/3 in bond mutualfunds. CBIs finance committee meets regularly to review theinvestment performance of our endowment funds.

President Amy Corton reported that we are mid-way throughthe Light the Way annual giving campaign. She remindedboard members to make their own contributions if they have notdone so. It is hoped that additional contributions will beforthcoming from individuals wanting to take their charitablededuction in 2009 instead of 2008.

Emily Jennewein, chair of the search committee, reportedthat additional applications from candidates for our Assistant/

Associate Rabbi position have been forwarded by the PlacementOffice of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). Asecond candidate has been invited for an on site visit andadditional interviews in January. Other applicants areprogressing through the preliminary interview process.

The CBI Board meets monthly, generally on the thirdThursday of each month, starting at 5:00 p.m. Board meetingsare usually open to the general membership. We ask that for planning purposes, you call or email HeatherTaylor-Williams at 858.536.1111 ext. 3113 if you plan to attend.
