One of the things that the new year brings is a good time to set goals for our education and learning. The best tool students have for keeping on track is the school agenda planner. Our Sanderlin expectation for ALL students, both PYP and MYP, is that the agenda planner goes home every day and is reviewed by a parent. PK-6th grade students should return agendas the next day signed by a parent. Please ensure that you are supporting our overall learning goals for your student by reviewing agendas every school day . Hello Sanderlin Sea Turtle Learning Community,

I am excited to send out my first submission in the monthly Sea Turtle Tidings newsletter. I have had a wonderful first couple of weeks at Sander-lin and can’t thank everyone enough for the warm welcome I have received. In addition, I appreciate the parents who have completed the survey I sent out last week. It has given me some valuable input to use in making decisions moving forward.

The upcoming months are critical months for your child’s academic development and progress. We are approaching our state standardized testing times and we are working diligently to prepare our students for these important assessments. Ensuring that your child gets to school on time each and every school day is one of the most vital indicators of their success. We encourage you to drop your child off at 8:15 but no later than 8:35 so that they are in their seat and ready to learn when the 8:45 bell rings. Sanderlin Welcomes Our New Principal

Please welcome Carrie Armstong to our Sanderlin community! Ms. Armstong has been an educator in Florida for 17 years. She’s been an administrator for 13 years, the past five as a Principal. Ms. Armstrong has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master’s degree from USF.

Ms. Armstong lives in St. Petersburg and she has a Kindergartener who attends Sanderlin. Ms. Armstong loves football; she is a fan of USF, Clemson, and the Bucs! She’s also an avid runner, and she loves anything to do with the beach and water. Her favorite color is blue.

Students and staff have been getting to know Ms. Armstrong since the second semester began. Please introduce yourself when you see her!

Home-School Communication News

SchoolMessenger is the district’s communication tool with which we can send voicemail and email messages WITH ATTACHMENTS! Due to budget cuts & the IB way of “going green” and conserving our natural resources, the vast majority of communication is sent electronically during the school year. Please listen to the Friday night “Weekly Message” to keep you informed of weekly events!

Please Keep Your Phone Numbers & Email Addresses Updated in FOCUS!

New Address??? Phone Number???

Quite a few student address updates have been recently reported to teachers or the front office. Parents MUST bring proof of any change in address to the front office, in order to have the address changed in the district database. Parents must bring in a utility bill, phone bill, or lease for the new address. It is very important to keep this information up-to-date; transportation and county mailings depend on having the correct information in our system! Thank you.

**It is very important that your current home and business

telephone numbers, as well as two emergency contacts always be on file in the school office.

Cafeteria Notes

The partial government shutdown has affected many families throughout Tampa Bay, including some right here at Sanderlin. If you are one of the families affected by a loss of income due to the government shutdown, assistance is available to you.

You may apply for free or reduced-price school meals online at www.myschoolapps.com, or you can request a paper application from

Jennifer Rios, our Cafeteria Manager. Eligibility for this program will be valid for the remainder of the 2018-19 school year, plus the first 30 days of the 2019-20 school year.

In addition, Sanderlin maintains a Food Pantry. If you are in need of food assistance, please con-tact our Social Worker Dena McKenna at [email protected] or Guidance Counselor Brittany Hardy at [email protected].

If you owe money to the cafeteria, please be sure to take care of any outstanding debts as soon as possible. You can add money to a child’s account by going to www.myschoolbucks.com or by send-ing in cash or check (payable to James B. Sanderlin PK-8) to the cafeteria. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Did you know…???

Did you know here at Sanderlin breakfast is offered for FREE every day for all Sanderlin stu-dents? That’s right! It’s FREE! There is no paperwork, no hassles, just free breakfast!

Breakfast is served from 8:15-8:35 a.m. daily. The cafeteria staff stop serving at 8:35. Please ensure your child is here by 8:30 so there is time to go through the breakfast line.

Lunchtime Visitors

Due to updated security measures and as has been previously communicated, lunchtime visitors to our campus are restricted because we have very limited staff members to escort visitors, as re-quired by district policy. Our lunch procedures for this school year are as follows:

• If you have Level 2 clearance, you may come any day of the week to have lunch with your child. You must have your Level 2 badge with you!

• All other family members and visitors (Level 1) may only come on Fridays; visitors will be escorted to and from the cafeteria.

• Regardless of whether you are Level 1 or Level 2, you may only have lunch with your child and you must eat at the designated table in the lunchroom. Mentors are the exception.

• When lunch is over, children will leave with their class. If Level 1, the teacher will guide the visitor to the front office. All parents and family members must return to the office and sign out before leaving through the front door.

We appreciate your understanding & cooperation!

School personnel may assist students in the ad-ministration of clearly labeled medications only when the official authorization form is on file at school, and only at the time designated by the doctor.

OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS:

The medication forms (ORANGE) are available in the school office. Please fill in with the name of the medication, dosage and special instruc-tions. All forms must be signed by a physician/dentist and the parent/guardian. Medication must be in the original, unopened, and labeled container.

PRESCRIBED MEDICATION:

The medication forms (BLUE) are available in the school office. A parent or guardian only must bring in the medication; it must be deliv-ered to school in a labeled, original container that specifically states the dosage and time(s) the medication is to be given (i.e. “11:30am”, not “at lunchtime”). Please fill in the name of the medication, dosage and any spe-cial instructions. All forms must be signed by the parent/guardian. Eye and ear drops cannot be administered by school personnel.

Students may not carry over-the-counter or prescribed medications at any time UNLESS a

February is Volunteer Appreciation Month! Volunteers: thank you for all you do for us here at Sanderlin! So many of you tutor and mentor our students, plan events, go on field trips, proctor tests and so much more. We are so grateful for you!

If you are not a volunteer here at Sanderlin, we want you to be! Please visit https://www.pcsb.org/Page/459. This page has everything you need to know about becoming a general volunteer or upgrading to a Level II volunteer. There is even the Volunteer Form you can fill out, print and send with your student.

Please contact the front office if you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information!

PTSA Shout Out! A tremendous “THANK YOU” to our fabulous PTSA for donating the funds necessary to help our PYP’s SUNN and our MYP’s Turtle Talk produce truly professional broadcasts! PTSA’s purchase replaced both a soundboard and studio lighting that was original to the opening of Sanderlin. Both SUNN and Turtle Talk communicate the happenings not only at James B. Sanderlin IB World School, but in our community and the world at large. We appreciate the continued support of our students, staff, and parents through our PTSA!

National School Counseling Week is February 4-8th! This week focuses on the important contribution of school counselors in our schools. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, this week highlights the impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. This year’s theme is, “School Counselors: Providing Lessons for Life.”

Clinic Needs

Clinic clothing is used to replace items soiled in accidents, spills, illness, and for dress code vio-lations. Currently, the Clinic is in need of adult small & medium shorts, pants & shirts. We ask that you please only bring in clean, gently worn or new clothing in compliance with Sanderlin’s dress code – no more than 3" above the knee, no rips or holes, shirts must cover the shoulders. Health Tips

As we enter the time of year when respiratory illnesses become more prevalent, please remem-ber these health tips:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with peo-ple who are sick.

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirt sleeve – NOT with your hands.

• Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs. In-crease the frequency of cleaning if someone is sick.

• Stay home when you are sick, and encour-age parents to keep their students home if they show signs of illness. This is the best way to prevent the spread of illnesses.

Following these tips can help to slow the spread of many illnesses – common cold, flu, enterovi-rus, and other pathogens that can lead to dis-ease.

Being an inquirer means to develop your natural curiosity. Inquirers learn the different skills they need to experiment, research and dig deeper into issues and topics that are interesting to them. Inquirers learn to become independent, self-motivated and enthusiastic learners who en-joy learning and sharing their love of learning with others.

Ways to be an Inquirer:

• Be curious and motivated to find answers for your wonderings.

• Ask meaningful questions that are connected to an experience or new learning.

• Choose to read a variety of non-fiction texts to learn about topics that interest you.

• Be eager to learn and try new strategies.

• Independently research and seek out resources to learn more about topics, ideas and issues.

• Show enthusiasm and commitment to share what you discover.

• Choose to watch documentaries, visit significant places/museums/people or actively seek new opportu-nities that help you grow and learn independently.

On Thursday November 29th, 2018, Sanderlin families came together for a night of brain-growing inquiry, cultural explorations and a delectable Indian feast hosted by our very own PTSA members!

Our Parade of Nations high-lighted the beauty in our diversity as we learned about the many cultures that are represented at Sanderlin and admired our friends in their tradi-tional fashion statements!

The Silent Auction had us playing bidding wars with our family and friends as we eyed the beautiful gift baskets!

The MYP volunteer chorus girls left us in awe of their talent! Not only did they sing... but they sang a song in Hindi... so impressive!

One of the greatest highlights of the night was getting lost in the streets of Rajasthan and New Delhi! Families had the op-portunity to take virtual reality fieldtrips and walk through an-

cient ruins, visit a busy bazaar and navigate through traffic in the Indian capital! We then took a journey with our senses as we explored the spic-es, cuisine, clothing and artifacts from India.

Did you know that Chess, Carrom, and Snakes and Ladders are all games that were in-vented in India? Students not only inquired into the history of the games, but also learned to play them and had a blast! After all that excitement... we needed a mental and physical reset. Lo and behold that’s exactly what students ex-plored in the Hub! Through guided meditation, breathing exercises and Yoga, families were able to explore the mind-body connection, quiet their mind and rejuvenate their spirit.

Our annual family fun night definitely had us buzzing about our travels to India and it’s rich histori-cal and cultural heritage with our brain and heart in mind!

Parents are the first, and most significant, educators for their children. From the moment your child is born, you have instinctively supported his or her learning. When learning to talk, you encour-aged your child by talking to them, praising and accepting their attempts, giving them immediate feedback, and showing real pleasure in their efforts. Children learn from the models provided by others at home. It is not surprising then to realize that when parents are involved in their child’s learning, they learn faster. This is probably because parents have a special relationship with their children that educators can only aim for in a classroom.

Success in an IB World School is challenging for students, parents, and teachers as they develop increasing understanding of the complexities of an IB PYP framework that gives meaning to State standards. The rigor of an IB education is not the content of any school-based, national, or state curriculum. It is placing that content within the framework of the PYP and creating meaningful con-nections to understand broader concepts for children’s learning to transcend beyond the school, to develop learning for life.

At Sanderlin our mission statement reminds us that we are committed to teaching and learning with the brain and heart in mind. Our intention is to grow successful, active lifelong learners who work to make a difference in the world. Your role as parents is critical to our mission and we hope to strengthen our partnerships with families every day!

MYP

Taking Action Updates!

Our James B. Sanderlin MYP students are showing their caring attribute by taking action to help make their local communities a better place. Through applying their

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, students have taken initiatives with recycling, organizing toy drives for hospitalized children, assisting staff with evening events and are also volunteering time at various organizations within our Greater Tampa Bay community. Our Sanderlin community celebrates and thanks these students who are taking the initiative to make our world a better place. Please share your child’s community service experiences with our Sanderlin family! Contact Mrs. Keilty at [email protected] with your story!

Our 8th Grade Community Project Showcase will take place on May 2, 2019, from 6-8PM here at James B. Sanderlin PK-8 World School. All 8th Grade students will present their projects as part of the MYP experience.

Eighth grade students are now continuing with Phase 3 of their MYP Community Project by developing and

implementing their plan, and taking action! Please be sure your child has submitted their proposal, met with their mentor and is staying on pace with the project deadlines. This project provides students with a real-world opportunity for applying their Learner Attributes and ATL skills, in conjunction

with their passion, as they grow their knowledge and awareness of their unique role and responsibility as a member of their local and global community. Some projects underway include providing support at pet shelters, organizing a beach clean-up, creating a Mental Health Awareness campaign, and providing entertainment for hospitalized children to name a few. Way to go 8th-grade MYP!

Chayla C. and her mentor concluded their toy drive with an overflowing amount of giving from our community. Thanks to our wonderful Sanderlin IB family, they filled a whole bin at All Children’s Hospital for the Nite Train Express toy giveaway.

Thank you to all that participated!

Thank you to our Sanderlin students who are applying their skills to make our world a better place!
