Dear Friends, I have a question for all of us. Is Lent self-centered or other centered? Let me explain what I mean. There is a part of the spiritual journey that focuses on the self. We can discipline our bodies or strive for a deeper prayer life. In confession we can concentrate on our sins in terms of how our actions wound us. We are not “all that we can be” or all that God would like in us. This can be good. Yet it is not enough. Another part of the spiritual journey focuses on others. How can I make a difference in the lives of others? We see needs and want to help. We recognize that our spiritual growth is meant to be other centered. In other words we concentrate on how we are becoming more loving toward other people and more loving toward God. We even begin to look at sinfulness in terms of how our actions hurt others. Of course these are not mutually exclusive. Most of us do both. Yet it helps to ask ourselves where our focus is. And so I ask again, “Is Lent self-centered or other centered?” I would suggest that whatever we give up, however we fast, in whatever ways we deepen our prayer we must become more loving. We must be aware of suffering and seek to alleviate it. We must not just give alms but do so with love and hope that they will make a difference. I would suggest that this Lent we seek to become aware of the needs of others. There is another way of looking at Lent and that it is a spiritual journey that we do together. One of my favorite movies is entitled “The Way” starring the Catholic actor, Martin Sheen. It tells the story of a mourning father who begins the journey across the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. He begins the journey alone but as he traverses the way he comes in contact with fellow travelers. Eventually a few become an important part of his journey. He becomes part of theirs. His journey moves from being an act of solitude to an act of community. Lent is something we must do together. At Mass let us pray for each other. Let us show acts of charity to each other. Become part of the communal aspects of Lent such as our Friday evening Stations of the Cross and light dinner. In a special way, I do want to encourage all of us to participate in the parish mission in early March with John Angotti, a world renowned songwriter and Catholic speaker. As pastor, I want you to know that I am offering my sacrifices for the people of Our Lady of the Woods on my own Lenten pilgrimage. In Christ,
Father Mike

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests know to God. Philippians 4:6 Prayer is powerful. As Christians, we do not equate prayer with magic but with an outward and inward expression of faith. Prayer is a means of opening ourselves to God’s voice and opening our hearts to the presences of Christ in one another. We use prayer to focus our minds, to nourish our spirits, to surrender to God our doubts, fears, grief, struggles, contrition and pain that they may be transformed into hope, joy, courage, forgiveness, comfort and peace. Prayer is personal and communal. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20) By remembering one an-other in prayer we grow closer as a community of faith, rooted in unconditional love. If you are asked to pray for someone, take a moment and say a prayer. If you would like the parish to pray for a loved one please contact the parish office. Out of respect for the privacy of our parishioners, prayer requests to be shared at Sunday mass, must come from a family member of the one seeking prayers.
