Lent: opportunity to change our heart!

Before Jesus began his public minister, he spent forty days in the desert. He prayed, fasted, confronted temptaons, and prepared for the journey that was to come. During lent we imitate Jesus in selfdenial with expressions of deep conversion to enter into the lasng joy of life with the Risen Christ.

Lent became a way for Chrisans to publicly mark their sorrow for sin. We do this with Ash Wednesday remembering that we need God’s love and forgiveness.

Tradionally, the observance of Lent has been structured this way: Fasng, Praying and Almsgiving. Let us explain each one be,er.

FasngWe fast and abstain from meat on certain days. But we also fast by the common pracce of “giving something up for lent. This sacrifice helps in many ways: penance, spiritual discipline, expression of solidarity, affirmaon that only God is enough in our life. We can give up from a type of food, television, internet me, unnecessary spending of shopping, alcohol, cigare,es, sleeping in, etc.

PrayerIn prayer, we turn to God to fill our heart by his love. Lent is the me to be aware of our sins and the me to overcome everything that takes us away from God. Lent offers lot opportunies for prayers: the sacrament of reconciliaon, daily masses, selected readings for everyday, parish mission, Staons of the Cross Rosary, Eucharist adoraon. No excuse to say: “I did not know” when and how.

AlmsgivingJesus pour his life out for others. As disciples we are invited to do the same in our lives, as well in the extra steps we take outside in our ordinary acvies. To commit ourselves following Jesus means to encounter him on those who are poor, in needy or suffering. It is convenient during lent to organize campaigns to feed the hungry (donate food), welcome the stranger (means to be welcoming person to everyone), clothe the naked (donate clothe to a shelter), me to visit someone sick or prisoner, etc. We need Lent. As we fast, pray, and extend our hands to the poor, we are good followers of Jesus, joining ourselves more closely to him. He suffered and sacrificed; so do we. He lives in eternal joy; so will we, as we follow him with hope and commitment. Have a nice weekend!
