fauvism art movement => History - Developed in France during the 20th century. - Started by Henri Matisse. - The term Fauvism means Wild Beasts [known as les Fauves in French]. - The term les Fauves was born when a painting by Henri Matisse was shown at an exhibition at 1905 Salon dAutomne. - There were other Fauvists but Henri was one of the dominant figure. - It was not exactly an art movement. => Philosophy/Essence/Ideology - Oil pastels - It started with Henri experimenting with colours in paintings. - Emphasis on using pure colours without mixing/blending - Expressive and colourful style. - They painted subjects that invoke feelings of joy, pleasure and comfort so they always prefer to use intense colours and vigorous brush strokes. - Often left colours unblended which interfere with 3d perception. - Non-naturalistic colours. => Subject Matter - Subjects used are mainly landscapes. - Other subjects matter are portraits, interior and nude. - Forms used in the paintings are simplified. - Originality/Exaggerated colours on the subject matters. => Famous Artists Henri Matisse , Andre Derain , Albert Marquet , Charles Camoin , Louis Valtat , Georges Rounault , Kees van Dongen , Henri Evenepoel.
