ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGELes Fauves (French for The WildBeasts) was the name of a modernart movement in the early 20thcenturyIt was led by the painters HenriMatisse and André DerainThe Fauves were a group of Frenchpainters who were influenced by thebright colours used by the Post-Impressionists Vincent vanGogh and Paul GauguinThe bright colourful style of paintingthat they used began around 1900and continued beyond 1910, but thegroup was only together for threeyears, 1905–1907Their influence has continued untilthe present day

Matisse is regarded as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionarydevelopments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentiethcentury, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture
French artist, painter, sculptor and co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse. Thevivid, unnatural colors led the critic Louis Vauxcelles to derisively dub their worksas les Fauves, or "the wild beasts"
He exhibited his work in avant-garde circles internationally and in New YorkCity during the early twentieth century. Highly respected today, his work met with littlecritical or commercial success in his lifetime, and he died at the age of sixty-four
