ART HISTORY - FAUVISM ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) was the name of a modern art movement in the early 20th century It was led by the painters Henri Matisse and André Derain The Fauves were a group of French painters who were influenced by the bright colours used by the Post- Impressionists Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin The bright colourful style of painting that they used began around 1900 and continued beyond 1910, but the group was only together for three years, 1905–1907 Their influence has continued until the present day 'WE WERE ALWAYS INTOXICATED WITH COLOUR, WITH WORDS THAT SPEAK OF COLOUR, AND WITH THE SUN THAT MAKES COLOURS LIVE.' Matisse is regarded as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionarydevelopments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentiethcentury, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture

French artist, painter, sculptor and co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse. Thevivid, unnatural colors led the critic Louis Vauxcelles to derisively dub their worksas les Fauves, or "the wild beasts"

He exhibited his work in avant-garde circles internationally and in New YorkCity during the early twentieth century. Highly respected today, his work met with littlecritical or commercial success in his lifetime, and he died at the age of sixty-four
