Women’s clothing in 1980 ranthe gamut from conservativeto opulent fantasy. Many de-

signers reached back in history for inspi-ration. Te looked to the Middle Ages,the Renaissance, the Victorian era and

even the Peruvian Indians for something“new.” A few avant-garde designers tooktheir cues from futurism and designedclothes that looked like uniforms forspace travel. 1980 witnessed a revival ofthe classic “preppie” look that began inNew England prep schools in the 40s and50s. International fashion was inuenced

by American sportswear more so in 1980than it had been since the jeans of the60s. Designers did what they could to tryto please women. Tey opted for choice.

Hemlines bounced up and down andthere was no prescribed length — day ornight. Shapes ranged from slim to ex-tremely full and blousons returned. Velvetwas popular around the clock and womenwore lace with tweeds and leather. Clothes

could be made of any colour, with empha-sis on blocks and asymmetrical bands oftwo or more colours.
