Reflexive verbs (p.16-17)
What do you see when you look in the mirror? You see YOURSELF! Your reflexion!
That is what a reflexive verb shows. The subject of the verb is doing an action to himself.
We have a couple of examples of this in English. Compare the reflexive form of the verb with the non-reflexive form.
How is the meaning changed?
Reflexive Non- Reflexive
He ties his shoes himself. He ties his little brother’s shoes. I looked at myself in the mirror. I looked in the mirror. We invited ourselves to dinner. We invited them to dinner. I made myself a bowl of soup. I made a bowl of soup. You hurt yourself on the jungle gym. You hurt Arturo on the jungle gym.
Many verbs in Spanish are reflexive. As you learn these new verbs, be sure to learn them with the SE at the end so you
will remember the subject is doing the action to himself.
6
Conjugating Reflexive Verbs is easy. The only thing different from regular verbs is that you MUST use the REFLEXIVE
pronoun to show that the subject is doing the action to himSElf.
