CAMBOURNE CULTURAL SOCIETY(CCS) celebrated Diwali on the 28th ofOctober 2017 at the Cambourne VillageCollege. It was a vibrant celebration ofIndian culture and heritage whichengaged the whole community. Ganesh Pooja heralded the start ofthe celebration with devotional chantsand hymns that have been passeddown generations. This was followed bydramatisation of the climax of the Indianepic, Ramayana. It celebrates thetriumph of good over evil, light overdarkness. This was performed bychildren - the youngest just 4 years old. The cultural programme includeddances and songs and concluded withthe energetic Antakshari. It got theentire crowd of over 200 people on theirfeet, singing and enjoying Bollywoodsongs. The culinary delights of India

followed in a buffetdinner. From thefamiliar sweetnessof the rasagula, afirm favouriteamongst thechildren, to the hotand spicy disheswere all part of themenu. Then it wastime to burn of those curry calories. Crowds of people took to the dancefloor at the first notes of the fast-pacedBollywood songs with steps andsequences which only came to a halt atthe end of the night. The night brought forth the best of thetalent in the next generation and helpedus all connect with each other as well aswith our roots through the traditions ofDiwali, the festival of light.

Use of grit binsthis winterThe grit in the bin is a 50/50 mixture ofgrit and rock salt. The grit helps with grip, particularly in snowy conditions, and thesalt melts the snow and ice. However, when the surface temperatures fall below-5 degrees centigrade, the salt becomesincreasingly less effective and eventuallywill not work at all. When the surfacetemperatures increase, the salt will startworking again. Please use grit from the grit binssparingly. You simply sprinkle the grit onthe area needed to give a fine coating, and as the area is driven or walked uponthe grit will activate and melt the ice.Around one cup full is enough for onesquare metre, so a shovel full will go along way. Careful consideration is given to wheregrit bins are placed so that they arepresent in places where additionalgritting may be required. By using gritfrom the yellow bins on anything otherthan public highways you couldpotentially put road users at risk, shouldthe bin run out of grit. If you wish to clear your driveway orfootpaths, salt can be purchased fromlocal building suppliers and DIY stores.Or, as an alternative, you can use tablesalt or dishwasher salt.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance (lipid) created by the liverand also found in some foods. Some cholesterol is vital andneeded for making hormones and vitamins. In the bodycholesterol attaches to proteins (lipoproteins). There are two types of Cholesterol:- HDL (high density lipoprotein) takes cholesterol away fromcells and back to the liver to be disposed of - this is knownas Good Cholesterol.- LDL (low density lipoprotein) carries cholesterol to thecells. This is known as Bad Cholesterol because if there istoo much it can cause a build up of the fatty substance in thewalls of the blood vessels. This increases risk of heartattack, stroke and other diseases affecting the circulation. A blood test can easily find out whether your goodcholesterol levels are too low or bad cholesterol levels aretoo high. If this is the case there are many changes you canmake. A healthy, balanced diet can make a big difference asLDL (bad cholesterol) is found in food high in saturated fats. Therefore cut these back and increase amounts of fruits andvegetables in your diet, along with foods such as oats, beans, pulses and nuts (non-salted). As in all thingsexercise and stopping smoking will help. Should your bad cholesterol remain high your GP mayprescribe a statin to help reduce your cholesterol.Reference: www.bhf.org.uk (British Heart Foundation) .Catherine Price RNCambourne Parish Nursing [email protected]

Parliament returned in October after the conference recess, and since then, my main campaign has focused onimproving the Universal Credit benefit system. I raised thisissue during Prime Minister’s Questions and the PrimeMinister kindly agreed to meet with me to discuss this inmore detail. There will be a further debate in the Houseahead of the budget and I am optimistic the Government islistening and will reduce the 6 week delay claimantscurrently experience before receiving their first payment. South Cambs District Council have recently launched aconsultation on taxi licensing which aims to provide morestringent standards. The Council is proposing to introduce apolicy requiring all hackney carriages to be wheelchairaccessible vehicles. The consultation closes on 5th January2018. POLICE ARE URGING CAMBOURNE residents to checktheir home security now the clocks have gone back and theevenings drawn in. With more homes empty after sunset, officers are concerned the number of burglaries could rise. However, an increase in crimes over the darker monthscould be avoided if homeowners take a few simple steps. Detective Inspector Andy Tolley said: “Burglary is a priorityfor us and we’re working hard to catch offenders and bringthem before the courts. However, when the clocks go backoffences start to increase. It is usually an opportunist offenceso there are steps people can take to remove the temptationfor burglars.”Police are offering the following advice:• Install good lighting, for example exterior lights with dawn-to-dusk sensors and an alarm.• Use timer switches. These can be linked to lighting or evena radio giving the impression that someone is at home andcan be switched on through mobile phone applications.• Close your blinds or curtains at night, preventing peoplefrom looking into your home. If your children are home firstfrom school encourage them to close curtains and blinds.• Keep windows and doors secure, and lock side gates, even if you are at home.• Do not leave spare keys hidden outside – a burglar willalways look for these first.• Mark your valuables – with your post code and housenumber – or garden and shed equipment with a spare can ofpaint or even nail varnish.• Do not leave car keys near the front door or anywhereeasy to find. For more burglary prevention advice, visit:https://www.cambs.police.uk/information-and-services/Burglary.aspx

The shepherds' quandaryWhen I am walking round the shops at Christmas time Ioften wonder what the shepherds thought on that dark nightwhen suddenly there was a blinding light and anangel was sitting with them. They were terrified. I canimagine the angel quietly telling them not to be afraid, because he had come to tell them that a baby had beenborn in their village that night, the Saviour all the people hadbeen waiting for and he went on to tell them that they couldfind him, lying, all wrapped up in a manger. Then suddenly he was gone and they were most perplexed. "What do you make of that?" - "Just a great big cleverhoax" - "No one will ever believe us, we are only simpleshepherds" - "We can't leave the sheep"- "Well there is onlyone way of finding out, let's go and see". Just then a great heavenly choir filled the heavens singing,"Praise God in heaven and peace on earth to everyone whopleases God". This gave then great confidence as they went. "Let's trythe Inn stables, the boss uses it as an overflow," and therethey found the Child exactly as the angel said. Standing in the shop, I ponder about the simplicity of thatstable scene and the razzmatazz of a commercialChristmas. In our church we believe it was just as the angelsaid and if you want to have peace with God this Christmastime we suggest you read it for yourself in Luke's Gospel orcome and hear more of it at one of our services.Ian Jarvis - Church Warden

Dear Friends,We come to December withjoy and rememberance. Itreally is a most wonderfultime of the year. With songsof praise and carols beltingout all over I really like it. Asthat famous hymn states inlanguage so clear:Joy to the World ,the Lord is come!Let earth receive her King;Let every heart prepare Himroom. So this is not merely areceiving as you would a

guest into your home butrather a king and friend andSaviour into your heart. A guest may stay for awhile in the home but whensomeone takes residence inyour heart they never leave. It is my prayer for all inCambourne to have thisplace in thier heart andprepare it. We prepare bygoing over who Christ is andwhat he has done frometernity past to the manger ofBethlehem. A life of serviceand love that led to the cross

MONKFIELD PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL: Since the start of theirjourney in education our Reception children have been eager tolearn and are full of enthusiasm. This was seen through theirlearning for our topic of ‘Magical Me’. They have enjoyed sharingfavourite stories and teddies with one another as well as talkingabout their likes and dislikes through activities such as tastingdifferent types of fruits and vegetables. In addition, they have spenttime telling each other about their families and celebrating theirdifferences. This gave the children an insight into the variety ofcelebrations they enjoy, including the Hindu festival of Diwali. Tocelebrate this festival, the children took part in a yoga session andhad great fun dancing together. The excitement continued back inthe classroom, making diva lamps and creating rangoli patterns! We are pleased with the children’s progress, especially in phonics, with many of them already reading simple words. Each day thechildren look forward to learning a new letter sound and applyingtheir knowledge of different letters through their independentactivities. They love the cosy reading areas, the themed role playspaces as well as painting and playing number games. There’s always so much to do in Reception at Monkfield Park andjudging by the smile on the children’s faces, it is evident that theyare enjoying their new experiences at the school.

THE CAMBOURNE PRE-SCHOOL has been busy in thelast few weeks as it celebrated Diwali and Halloween. The week before half term, we learnt about Diwali througha range of activities such as making coconut laddu sweets, drawing rangoli patterns with chalk in the garden, and mak-ing diya lamps from salt dough. After half term, we had spooky fun celebrating Halloween. Many of the children wore their Halloween costumes to pre-school, or took part in dressing up using pre-schools outfits. We hammered golf tees into pumpkins, which was fun and agreat activity for developing physical skills. We calved pump-kins and explored the insides, used eyes and pipe cleanerswith the play dough to create some scary monsters. Weused tweezers to pick up bugs, and 'cooked' in the playkitchen using cauldrons and spooky ingredients.

A TRIBUTE TO KHURRAM NAEEMCAMBOURNE CRICKET CLUB: At the end of October, theclub received the shocking and saddening news that one ofour players, Khurram Naeem, had passed away. As a club,we would like to pay tribute to him as a cricketer and agentleman, and our thoughts and prayers are with his familyat this difficult time. Khurram joined Cambourne CC for the 2017 season, transferring from Madingley CC. We are intending to hold amatch next season between Cambourne and Madingley in hismemory. Although he only played with us for a short time, his impacton the club was immediate. He set the tone on-field in hisdebut game with the 3rd XI vs Milton, taking two wickets withhis bowling, then scoring 92 runs from just 40 balls to seal thevictory. He was immediately promoted to the first team, andconsistently played well across the season.

However, beyond hisindividual performances,he was a passionate, generous andinspirational player. Always full of energyand positivity, he broughtthe game to life with hisregular cries of "Excellent!" and was always there to gee upthe team when heads dropped. He was also very confident -his batting partners soon got used to him ambling down thewicket after despatching the ball to the boundary and saying,"we don't need to run that one." Khurram will be missed, both on the cricket field and in thewider community. We have lost a true friend, who was ashining example to us all.

CAMBOURNE TENNIS:Congratulations to Neha and Arif fortheir amazing experience in the NationalQuorn Family Tennis tournament. Thetournament rules are that a junior player(18 or under) plays with an adult familymember as a doubles pair. They wonthe Cambridge County competition andthen the East region competition (10Counties) to reach the National Final! The finals were held over two days atthe National Tennis Centre inRoehampton where many of the topBritish players train. There were 16finalists split in groups of four. Arif andNeha managed to win their group andjust scraped through a tough Quarter-

final before losing in the Semis to theeventual winners to finish fourth. Nehacouldn't carry her Dad anymore! Closer to home, we are having ourClub Christmas Party on 8th Decemberthis year. Cambourne FC reflects on amazing first half of season

Spartans make final push toward unbeaten season

CAMBOURNE FC: With the approach ofthe end of this year we see the end of thefirst half of the season. A time forwearing base layers at training, festiveover indulgence and one eye on thereturn fixtures the New Year will bring. Thanks to Carl , Dan , Ant and Eddiewho have made sure the growingnumbers of our Saturday Soccer Schoolnew starters get a great intro to the sport, and importantly have great fun doing so.A reminder that training for 4-6 yr olds is on the 3G from 9am-10am every Saturday morning. At £2 per session, on a 'pay toplay' basis, there isn't a better way to spend your time ormoney. Our U7 Whites team (pictured having a break from scoringgoals) are having a great season. With training going well andthem really gelling as a team, we wish them every success in

their upcoming match against CambridgeUnited PDC and in the Norwich FCtournament. The is the first season for our newest U8Greys team who have had a great startand face a busy schedule leading toChristmas. They are currently looking foranother player so anyone interestedplease contact us. Our more establishedU8 Lions team are so far unbeaten thisseason. The boys are working hard

training twice a week with a kid's fitness sessioncomplimenting their normal football focused practise. Whilst some of our teams are oversubscribed there is stillopportunity at some age groups for those looking to develop inthe game, or just looking to have fun and get some exercise. For further information on atttending or to contact us [email protected] or www.cambournefc.org

CAMBOURNE FC SPARTANS: The Spartans go into theirlast three games of 2017 having won eight from eightcompetitive games looking to win away to Burwell (18-Nov)and home to Whittlesford (25-Nov) to finish top of the pile atthe Christmas break. The boys reached the Quarter Final of the Cambs Cup with adevastating performance away to "A" League GreatChesterford. Three goals in the opening twenty minutesstunned the favourites to progress and they never got backinto the game, Spartans winning 5 :3 at the final whistle. The team will travel to league leaders Witchford and "A"

League Isleham Untied in the cup in the New Year, two gameswhich could define the season with the boys determined tobring silverware back to the village. Spartans welcome Mydas Smalls to the squad whoimpressed with his personality and football technique intraining during October. We are certain that Mydas will fit inperfectly and enhance the squad for the rest of the season. Finally a huge well done to Connor Fitzpatrick; setting aSpartan record of scoring in ten consecutive games for theboys, banging in twenty goals in the process.#wearespartan

CAMBOURNE RUGBY: The Exiles played a tough awaygame against Cantabs, a very strong team that play with adepth of players and subs. The game kicked off withCambourne on the back foot, as the Cantabs pack tookadvantage of their strength and weight to slip through for twoearly tries. However, Cambourne's newfound form undercoach Chris Wallis fought their way back, which meantCantabs did not have things entirely their way. Cambourne threw well-drilled attacks against their strongdefence exposing cracks in the line, allowing the advantageand score of two tries. One came from Captain Ryan Cox offthe back of a scrum, and the other from a great try fromRussell Withey. Cambourne then started to turn the table onthe heavier Cantabs pack displaying better technique and front

row, Jack Mills, notablydominating his oppositenumber. The engine of the pack,Brandon Rennie and MarcTirant, fired on all four cylindersand Man of the Match LeeCooke put in a performanceMartin Johnson would be proudof. Unfortunately, all this pressure came too late to Cantabs'relief the score ended Cantabs 21 - 14 Cambourne. Ten moreminutes would definitely have seen a different score line. If you would like to watch some Cambourne Rugby, our nexthome game on 9 December against Haverhill. Kick off is at1400hrs. If you would like to join Cambourne Rugby, we trainto the right of the all-weather pitch every Thursday night at6:45pm. Ability or experience don't matter, all welcome.
