Dear LSU Parents & Families,

Welcome to the LSU family! We couldn’t be more excited

that your student has selected LSU as his or her alma

mater. A college degree has never been more important to

the future of our younger generation, and LSU offers both

an exceptional education and a campus experience second

receiving as many national accolades as those attending

Ivy League schools while paying affordable tuition that

won’t commit them to a life of debt. In fact, our in-state

tuition is 22% lower than the average charged by flagship

universities, and our students graduate with 46% less student debt than the national

average. However, none of this matters if our students don’t finish their degrees. And

we know that no matter what a student’s major, everyone needs a little support along

the path toward graduation. That’s why we offer extensive support services, including

our renowned Center for Academic Success, which offers personalized study plans and

tutoring, among other programs.

Our Olinde Career Center provides interview training, resume workshops, networking

opportunities, and more to make certain that your student graduates with the skills

needed to land a job. Pair this with the fact that our alumni earn starting and mid-career

salaries higher than those of many of our flagship university peers and it’s safe to say that

your Tiger will start his or her professional life heading in the right direction.

On the lighter side of things, LSU offers more than 400 organizations, so everyone can

find something they’re interested in to engage with other like-minded students. Our

top-notch Student Recreational Center is also a great resource for students to burn off

calories, participate in group sports, and engage in healthy lifestyle choices that will

follow them throughout their lives.

There are so many great things going on at LSU, and we can’t wait for your Tiger to

Dear LSU Parents & Families,

As the parent of two recent college graduates, I know firsthand

the logistical planning that goes into selecting a college and

moving a student to campus. Every student is different, and

certainly my son and daughter had different, but extremely

positive, college experiences. One thing is certain--I am very

glad that your child decided to come to LSU!

I believe the LSU experience is unmatched. We have

passionate and expert faculty who care deeply about student

success. To get the full LSU experience, a student needs to

be fully engaged or involved in various campus activities.

LSU offers over 400 student organizations, and I strongly

encourage your student to take advantage--whether academic, religious, service, Greek,

athletic, intramural, or special interest hobbies. National research has shown that

students who are more involved on campus actually get better grades and graduate in

higher percentages.

In addition to student organizations, our campus offers a number of cultural events and

activities and our athletic events that are second to none. The spirit and enthusiasm that

comes with watching Tiger football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and our many Olympic

sports is contagious. Check them out at lsu.edu/calendar.

Also, be sure to visit our brand new comprehensive Olinde Career Center in the Student

Union, as well as the Geaux Center, our recently opened welcome facility there. We are

also doubling the size of our Recreation Complex with a massive facelift and expansion.

Above all, remember the true goal of all our students (and their parents!) is graduation,

walking across the stage in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center (PMAC) to receive a

diploma. I encourage you and your student to keep your “eye on the prize!”

Family Involvement Opportunities

The Family Association is dedicated to helping families with their transition into the University and offering support, information, and problem solving throughout a student’s career at LSU. The Family Association offers opportunities for parents to more closely partner with the University in their student’s experience. We can help lead your family to LSU services and resources that will allow you to support your student.

The Family Association supports student success and promotes the University’s goal to retain students through financial support of programs and scholarships made possible through development efforts.

In addition to scholarships and other programs, we also plan events throughout the year. One of our major events is Fall Family Weekend had in conjunction with a home football game. We also encourage you to make plans to visit campus during the Spring Family Event held in conjunction with home baseball games. These two events are great opportunities to visit campus and your student.

We invite all families to participate in all of our events as attendees and as volunteers. Here are other ways of contributing to the success of The Family Association:

• Volunteering at orientation to connect with parents of incoming LSU students and recruit new Family Association members.

• Volunteering at or hosting a Summer Send-Off to help students and parents get to know one another in their hometowns.

• Donating an item to support the Family Weekend Silent Auction.

• Giving back to the Family Association to help our emergency support fund, scholarship fund, and various Family Association programs. Please visit family.lsu.edu/giving for more information.

The newfound freedom that your student now has will be a major adjustment, not only on their part, but also on your part. Remember to work with your student and communicate. You may feel compelled to set up a time where you and your student will talk on the phone, which will become routine. Exams are quickly approaching, and this means that stress and anxiety could slowly be setting in for your student. The concern of doing well on their exams is a situation that will last throughout their entire collegiate career. It is best to remind students that there are resources offered around campus to help or assist them. The Center for Academic Success is dedicated to helping students understand how to study college material and work on their planning and organization skills, as well as providing necessary tutors in subjects considered difficult.

Cold, flu, and strep season is here, and college students are prime targets for contracting one of these illnesses. Staying cautious of what students are touching, where they are going, and what vitamins/foods they are taking in can help students avoid these illnesses. However, some students are not so lucky, and inevitably, end up with the common cold or flu. Students who are not feeling well have the opportunity to go to the LSU Student Health Center for free checkups and doctor visits. The LSU Student Health Center can conduct many tests, run labs, and even provide your student with the necessary pharmaceutical drugs they need to get better before coming home for Thanksgiving break.

UREC’s diverse programming and facilities make it simple for your students to stay active throughout their college career. Students have the ability to choose how they exercise by taking a fitness class, competing on an intramural or sport club team, or by doing something like sea kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico on one of many adventure trips throughout the Southeast. Full-time students are automatically UREC members and have access to the Student Recreation Center, enabling students to stay active throughout their college career in more ways than one.

As the summer comes to a close, your students may start to experience summer boredom or the desire to head back to campus. The idea of seeing college friends again and continuing with their collegiate career may start to bring major excitement. However, sometimes your student may start to worry about their sophomore year and question choices about major, living, or friendships. The ‘second-year slump’ can cause students to feel lost, confused, or even depressed. Talk to your student about these issues and remind them that you are there for them, and that these feelings are normal for all college students.

“When Cameron decided to attend LSU, it was a happy day in

our household! Then reality began to set in. While Cam began

daydreaming about moving out and being an adult, we daydreamed

about when he was a little baby, our only child, looking to us to

fulfill his every need. He wanted independence and we wanted

to stay involved in his life. Surely there was a way to meet in

the middle….? Then we attended Family Orientation, which is

put together by the wonderful staff of the LSU Parent & Family

Programs. Suddenly we felt like we were part of the process, 'in

the loop'. We learned so much about what our Tiger would be

Residential Halls. Our questions were answered and we left

content in the knowledge that if we had additional questions, the

staff was just a phone call away. After this experience, joining the

LSU Family Association was a no-brainer. The biggest perk for us

is the opportunity to attend the fall and spring family events, where

we can meet Cameron’s friends and their families. This led us

to join the Family Association Council, where we have the great

honor of meeting other parents, sharing our experiences and letting

everyone know how easy it is to LOVE PURPLE and LIVE GOLD with

our Tigers!”
