Loans to students in all fields of study subject to the bank's conditions. Good academic results and a sound credit record are important. In the case of first- and second-year students, loans are usually granted only to the children of First National Bank customers, at whose branch applications should be made.

Undergraduate full-time Rates are differentiated based on whether the student or surety is a Nedbank Customer and are tiered according to the year of study The loan amount provided is based on the schedule of fees as set out by the institution for the degree/ diploma for the year of study concerned. These fees include: Course costs, Accommodation and Cost of Learning material, including equipment. Loans for Accomodation and Cost of learning material, including equipment will only be granted when a study loan is taken out with Nedbank. The retail Credit team leader responsible for study loans must approve study loans over and above mandated credit policy limits. The maximum loan affordable will be calculated by using an instalment calculation, whereby the student/surety will need to be able to afford the interest as a capital portion on a monthly basis. African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)

AIMS offers an intensive one-year graduate level course leading to a master’s-level Post-graduate Diploma in the Mathematical Sciences, formally accredited by the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and the Western Cape, taught in association with the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Cambridge, and the Division of Physical Sciences at the University of Oxford.

Applicants should hold, or anticipate completing by the start date of the AIMS course, a 4-year university degree in mathematics, or any science or engineering subject with a significant mathematics component. An applicant’s record should demonstrate a strong mathematical aptitude. The application process is highly competitive and potential applicants must be able to demonstrate both a high degree of motivation and the preparation and ability required to complete the course successfully.

Students are strongly advised to apply by 28 February to qualify for the first round selection which takes place during March of each year. These students will be notified by the end of March, whether they are accepted. Student applications received during March and April will be considered for places which may still be vacant.

2. AIMS/DST/NRF Advanced Mathematical Science Programme.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS: see http://www.aims.ac.za) invites applications from South African students holding a BSc degree or above in a Mathematical Science (including but not restricted to Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics) for a new course starting on January 31, 2005 and running for six months. The course will teach students how to formulate and solve scientific problems using powerful mathematical and computing techniques. It serves as preparation for the AIMS Post-graduate Diploma programme starting in September 2005 and finishing in June 2006, which teaches advanced research skills and provides a broad overview of cutting edge sciences. The AIMS diploma programme is taught by outstanding South African and international lecturers as well as a team of resident tutors. After completing the AIMS diploma, students are eligible for Masters and PHD degree programmes at a number of South African Universities.

U Any course of study at a South African university. One bursary annually, based on merit, is made available to prospective students with out-standing academic and intellectual abilities. Applicants must obtain at least four distinctions in their matriculation examination to qualify for this bursary. No post-degree employment contract. Attorneys Fidelity Fund

P The Attorneys Fidelity Fund offers a limited number of bursaries each year, for a maximum period of two years, for the 3rd and 4th year of study for the LLB degree at a South African University.

The amount of the bursary will be limited to the amount of the tuition fees, with a maximum amount determined each year.

The award of a bursary is based on either serious financial need or exceptional academic merit.

The requirement for qualification is one of the following: BA (Law), B.Com (Law), or B.Proc degree, a similar qualification or proof of successful completion of the first 2 years of the revised 4 year LLB curriculum.

Babette Taute Scholarships

The late Babette Taute left the major part of her estate to establish a bursary trust for stu-dents of English. Applicants must be South African citizens or have permanent resident status in South Africa.

Students of any branch of English language and literature study, including applied language studies, are eligible for the awards, but study directly related to English must constitute a major or at least 50% of the year’s work. The undergraduate and post-graduate scholarships are awarded for full- time study only. The amounts awarded and the number of awards in each category may change from year to year.

Awards are made on merit, broadly interpreted. A really good academic record is a requirement for an award. However, the trustees are also interested in other forms of merit. These might include leadership in cultural or social areas, quality of public-ations, and excellence as a teacher of English or a translator.

Scholars and bursars may hold other awards, provided that the total value of awards held may not exceed R25 000.

The trustees have decided to make awards in three categories: Book bursaries of R2 000 each for part-time final year under-graduates and part-time Honours students in their final year of study. Full-time applicants who do not receive scholarships will also be considered. Undergraduate scholarships of R11 500 each for full-time students entering the final year of study for their degrees. Honours scholarships of R15 000 each for full-time students in a one-year Honours programme or its equivalent.

P The ‘Ex-PCE’ bursary scheme was originally introduced by the Pretoria branch of the South African Council for English Education. It sought to assist ex-students and teachers of the Pretoria College of Education with furthering their studies in the teaching and/or promotion of the English Language. SACEE Pretoria Branch now wishes to attract applicants from a wider field and the qualification criteria for this bursary are now as follows:

The bursary is available for Postgraduate study only. The course can be on any aspect of the English Language, drama courses, etc. The course can be by correspondence, part-time or full-time. It must be at a South African educational institution.

The Carl & Emily Fuchs Foundation for students with Disabilities

P The Programme for Students with Disabilities is available to post-graduate students with disabilities studying at a South African university only.

Assistance is awarded in any academic field of study formally registered with a South African university.

The intention of the assistance programme is to assist students with disabilities in order to complete their studies successfully. Assistance can take various forms, including human capital, specialized equipment or the removal of obstacles that inhibit the probability of academic performance. Each application will be accessed on its own merit.

The assistance is awarded based on the following selection criteria:

- Past academic achievement/excellence (a

minimum requirement of a completed degree)

- Economic merit (preference will be given to economically deprived applicants)

- The merit of the applicant’s disability and motivation of the specific need.

- Applicants must also be willing to be inter-viewed by a selection panel, during which the individual merit of each individual application will be assessed.
