Speaking during a media briefing held at the Grand Hotel in Port Elizabeth on Monday, the military veterans’ chairperson, Ntsikelelo Kwezi, said the MKMVA has been quiet for far too long. “Since, the advent of democracy, we never raised our voices on any issues. We have been quiet. So at this point in time, perhaps you’d think that our calling the media for a state- ment is unprecedented,” said Kwezi. He said that they had, however, been ad- dressing issues these past three years. But see- ing the ANC lose the gains of the struggle for democracy and the (ANC supporter) numbers dwindling has forced them to decide to stand up and get out of the cocoon so as to be counted in support of the ANC and the national demo- cratic revolution. Kwezi said lack of leadership was the main problem bedevilling the ANC, but since Dr Danny Jordaan came to the fore to lead the council, they had seen him do a sterling job which led to financial prudence and political stability. “He came with a clear, clean, strong and de- cisive leadership and administration that the metro municipality had long been waiting for,” said Kwezi. He said the executive mayor did well in a year as the incumbent in establishing the Met- ro Police, that had been touted for many years, and appointing former MK Commander Linda Mti as the head of Safety and Security. “As the former MK Commander, Mti knows very well what is required and as such, we hope he’d populate the organisation by draw- ing metro police from the ranks of the MK Mili- tary Veterans Association,” said Kwezi. “MKMVAs were trained and prepared in po- licing, intelligence and military work,” said a member, Phakamile Ximiya. FORMER rugby player MthuthuzeliLaxa is giving back to the sport forthe benefit of the current genera-tion.

Laxa of Dabane clan in Mother-well, who is a Correctional ServicesDepartment official, bought full kitfor Walmer Wales RFC. The kit con-sists of jerseys, shorts and socks. The donation is aimed at encourag-ing current players to play knowingtheir community supported them.“I played rugby so I know what it

means to have new kit to play in. I’d

like to assist in the development ofthis sport,” he said.WalmerWaleswas one of the clubs

that formed part of the famed Kwa-zakhele Rugby Union (KWARU)which produced many great rugbyplayers in its history.“WalmerWales is one of the oldest

rugby teams in Walmer Township. This is the team that has producedthe first rugby Springbok in GilmanNoqoli. We’re reviving this teamandwould like these kids whose averageage is 15 years to follow in the foot-steps of Mack Sthanko,” said teamPresident and Chairman MakhayaJack, a former Springbok himself.

“We appreciate what Laxa did. Asa result we don’t want him to be justthe sponsor, we want him to partnerin the club. Rugby development re-quiresmen like him to come forwardand put shoulders to the wheel. Thisis not just sport but business.”According to Jack, Walmer Wales

RFC will celebrate its 90th anniver-sary in two years time. He said withtheir talented and highly dedicatedplayers they are making great stri-des on the field of play on the wayto the centenary celebrations.“With support from people like

Minki (Laxa), we can achievemore,”Jack said.
