EARLY childhood education in the EasternCapereceivedamuch-neededboostwhenTheUnlimited Child partneredwith locally basedEarly Inspiration toprovide trainingandedu-cational toys to 13 crèches in Port Elizabeth’sWalmer Township. The immense lackofearlychildhoodeduca-
tionthroughoutSouthAfricahasalwaysbeena pressing concern and was the reason for es-tablishing The Unlimited Child.Steph Bester, chairman of The Unlimited
Child, said serious intervention was neededto put the spotlight on the massive socio-eco-nomic impact this could have for future gen-erations. The Unlimited Child was helping tocreate a future for tens of thousands of chil-dren by laying a solid foundation before theyreached the age of seven. At the same time,crèche caregivers were trained to maximisethe use of the educational toys and to createstimulating learning environments.“The state of early childhood education in
South Africa is shocking and it’s estimatedthat therearemore thansixmillionpreschoolchildren in this country, who receive little orno proper stimulation. This will directly af-fect theirmotor skills and cognitive and emo-tional development, and the lack of stimula-tionmakes these children extremely vulnera-ble,” Bester said.Easily replicated, The Unlimited Child ini-
tiative focusesonastructuredprogrammeforpreschool children as well as the training
needs of their caregivers. Since its establish-ment in 2008, The Unlimited Child has al-ready successfully reached 615 crèches and65 000 pre-school children. It has also provid-ed training to more than 1 900 caregivers.“We have seen that this project is a rapid-
impact initiative and its effect is felt withinweeks of a community being ‘touched.’ Wewill continue to expand our footprint in therest of the country to realise ouraimof reach-ing 20 000 crèches nationally by 2020.“In order to achieve our goal, we partner
with organisations such as Early Inspirationthat are already active in specific areas. Byworking with partners that are passionateadvocates for early childhood education, TheUnlimitedChild is aiming to create a sustain-able approach to solving some of the challen-ges in this sector,” Bester said. The Unlimited Child approached Early In-
spiration to identify crèches it was alreadyinvolved with andwhich specifically cateredfor three- and four-year-olds in the Walmerarea. Following a successful training pro-gramme, certificates and educational toyswere issued to the respective caregivers andsupervisors. For Dr Lauren Stretch, the founder and di-
rector of Early Inspiration, early childhooddevelopment has always been a passion.“Through my studies, I realised the impor-tance of early stimulation and intervention.Through active engagement in the field, I
have realised that our country faces a desper-ate need and this stirred a desire to make adifference and greater impact,” Stretch said.“All children are undergoing pre-assess-
ments and monitoring will take placethroughout the year, followed by a post as-sessment group which will reflect the impactachieved by The Unlimited Child in class-rooms in Walmer Township. We are pleased
with the scale and progress of the interven-tion. It is important thatweare first comforta-ble with current interventions before scalingup.Maintaining quality is a key focus for TheUnlimited Child and Early Inspiration andthis needs to be a priority before we can lookat any further expansion,” Stretch said. For more information, visit www.theunlimited-child.co.za. – REPORTER

WHILESAFAand theANCare inagreementthat Danny Jordaan does not have to resignfromhis jobas theassociation’spresidentaft-er his appointment as the newmayor of Nel-son Mandela Bay (NMB), opposition partymembers say his appointment appears to bein conflict with the constitutional provisionsof Safa.
The DA’s mayoral candidate for the NMB,Athol Trollip, said the ANC and Jordaanwould have to overcome this hurdle as theybelieved that he would have to decide oneway or another which role he would fulfil.Safa spokesperson, Dominique Chimhavi,
however, told News24 that Jordaan did nothave to resign from his job at Safa as it wasanormglobally that anassociationpresidentwas also employed somewhere else.Jordaanwas announced as the new execu-
tivemayor, replacing axedMayorBenFihla, subject to council voting, at a press confer-ence held by ANC general-secretary GwedeMantashe on Monday.Among the new appointments were Depu-
ty Mayor Bicks Ndoni, replacing ChippaNgcolomba, and Chief Whip Litho Suka, re-placing Joy Seale.Variousoppositionpartiesandcommunity
leaders in theNorthernAreas spokeoutwithvaried opinions ofwhat Jordaan’s first orderof business should be - with service deliverymaking it to the top of the list.Trollip said Jordaan’s appointment was
tantamount to shuffling the deck chairs onthe Titanic because the real problem in themetro was a broken ANC administration.“This fact is undisputed because even the
ANC and the president have recognised thisin the appointment of an interim task teamto replace the regional ANC executive. Thisis also why the DA believes that thismunici-pality is vulnerable and that it can be wonfrom the ANC in 2016.“Changing the face of the mayor merely
treats the symptom and not the cause of thedysfunction that is making citizens of PortElizabeth hungry for political change,” Trol-lip said.UDM president Bantu Holomisa said he
wasmore concerned that Jordaan had aban-doned Safa for his new role andwhat it affectit would have on national football. “This isawake-up call for the Safa body. It tells themthat in future they shouldmake sure they ex-tricate Safa from politics and depoliticise
football,” he said.Holomisa went on to say that Jordan had
abandoned Safa in midstream without in-forming its members who had invested inhimas thepresident. “Just because theydan-gled a carrot in front of him he has chosenthis side. He must leave soccer completelyand enjoy working for the ANC. He cannotrun both unless he is not serious about hisnew appointment,” said HolomisaMantashe, however, said Jordaan was ful-
ly capable of thisundertakingandhis expert-ise in sports and recreation would also bebeneficial to the NMB. He said Jordaanwould not be stepping away fromhis duty asSafa president, as Safawas not a full time jobbut a part time one equal to serving at an in-stitution.Mantashe denied that the ANC had made
their appointments based on their plightabout winning the Uitenhage and the North-ern Areas votes, with local elections nextyear, but said the party was determined towin those votes and thewhite votes in the re-gion.Mantashe said the Provincial Executive
Committee (PEC) had engagedwith relevantstructures and a review of the mayoral com-mittee would soon take place.“Themayoralcommitteemustbechanged,
with our driving force not the elections butservice delivery ...What needs to be donehasbeen done for now to ensure the health of theANC,” said Mantashe.Ndoni said he and Jordaanwould bemeet-
ing today to discuss developments in the re-ports of the task team. The task team comprises several high-pro-
file ANC cadres and was appointed after thedisbandment of the ANC regional structurein December.Admittinghis appointmentwas ahugeun-
dertaking following reports of infightingwithintheregionalANCbranchof themetro,Ndoni said they had been given a clear man-date to fix the infightingandpettinessamongthe ANC council members. “We have nospacefor fighting.Councillorswillbeputintoorder. The running of this metro must be acollective operation and we will not tolerateany pettiness in the administration,” saidNdoni.EFF regional deputy chairman, Elijah
“Bo” Madwara, said the black causus whichincludes local EFF, PAC, UDF, COPE andUnited Front leaders would be meeting onFriday to discuss the state of the metro andits leaders.

MORE than 5 000 construction workers andshop fitters worked feverishly this pastweeked to add the finishing touches to thebiggest and most eagerly anticipated shop-ping and entertainment complex in the East-ern Cape, the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall inPort Elizabeth’s western suburbs.
The mall, constructed in a record 24months, opens its doors to the public at 10amtomorrow (Thursday), shortly after a VIPceremony during which Eastern Cape Pre-mier PhumuloMasualle will cut a ceremoni-al ribbon indicating the start of the mall’soperation. At 10am sharp, ribbons spanning the
mall’s eight entrances over its two levelswillbe simultaneously cut to allow shoppers toenjoy Baywest Mall and the grand openingfestivities planned for the rest of the week.According to Baywest Mall GM, Sonja de
Necker, the mall had prioritised shoppersafety, as well as ease of access for shopperswith cars and those using public transport.Security breaches at shopping malls
around the country have put a sharp focuson mall security, while in Nelson MandelaBay commuters have bemoaned the lack ofproper public transport facilities at majormalls.“Baywest Mall has a dedicated public
transport drop-off and pick-up point, whichwehave tailored tomeet commuters’ needs,”said De Necker.“Not only is this facility at the doorstep of
the mall, meaning commuters won’t have towalk far, but it is roofed and offers a much-needed canteen and ablution facilities fordrivers.”While there were eight easy access points
to the double-storey mall’s safe and secureparking facilities, the special public trans-port access point had been incorporated atground level, leading to the roofed drop-offand pick-up point, said De Necker.
While the public transport drop-off andpick-up point would be operational from to-morrow, the facilities would be completedtowards the end of June, she said.Leading to the mall, the R300-million Bay-
west road network not only links shoppersconveniently to Baywest Mall via the N2freeway and Walker Drive in Sherwood, butalso links Sherwood to the N2, alleviatingtraffic congestion in the western suburbs.Baywest Mall also boasted high-tech secu-
rity, De Necker added.“We have prioritised shopper security,”
she said, adding that 230 state-of-the-artCCTV cameras with facial and number platerecognition software were placed strategi-cally throughout the mall and the parkingarea which surrounds the mall on bothfloors.“The entire access to themall is controlled
with security booms. We have also trainedup our security team and will have guardspatrolling themall and the parking area con-stantly. They will be on foot, on bicycles, quad bikes and in patrol vehicles,” said DeNecker. All the stores would also be fittedwith panic buttons, she said.To further ensure shopper safety, DeNeck-
er said, hoodies and caps would not be per-mitted inside the new mall.“Research shows that security breaches at
malls occur mostly at the hands of suspectswho hide their faces with caps or hoodies. We will be asking our patrons to removetheir hoodies, and if they are wearing caps, either to take them off or wear them back-to-front, so their faces are easily visible to oursecurity cameras.”Another safety element employed is that of
controlled parking, and deploying speciallytrained security personnel rather than carguards. There was an incremental parkingrate for this, said De Necker, to ensure thoseaccessing the parking were there to visit themall and to eliminate the need for car guardsas the security personnel will be patrollingthe carpark.Parking for the first hour is free.

MAMELODI Sundowns beat a gameAjax CapeTown 4-3 on penalties in a Nedbank Ke YonaCupplayed atNelsonMandelaBay at theweek-end.
This is after the fulltime score provided nogoals and after extratime, the defence of bothteams was water tight for the duration of thetotal 120 minutes played. The game, pitting mostly veteran Abafana
beStyle players who lost the Absa PremiershipLeague title to Kaizer Chiefs andwere gunningfor theNedbankCup - theonlysilverwareavail-able – against the young Urban Warriors ofCape Town who were hoping to be the onlyteam out of Gauteng towin theNedbankKe Yo-na Cup, started at a slow pace.Later, fast paced young lads of Cape Town,
better known as Die Lekker Ding tried to keepSundowns players busy but they could notbreak the solid Downs wall.Teko Modise and Khama Billiat played bril-
liant carpet football only to be denied by theAjax goalkeeper, Anssi Jaakkola.Nathan Paulse came close to scoring in the
42nd minute of the first half, but keeper DenisOnyangodeniedhimbyparryinghis shot, forc-ing a corner.
The introduction of Franklin Cale did notchange the complexion of the game too muchas Downs coach played his game right. It was in the penalties that much drama was
witnessed by close to capacity crowds who at-tended the final. Bongani Zungu’s well timedshot won the game for Sundowns and at leasthelped coach Pitso Mosimane win a Trophy, and R7 million prize-money for the big spend-ers Downs.Thiswas the first time since the stadiumwas
completed in 2009 that the Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) choseNelsonMandela Bay Stadi-um to host a cup final.“Nedbank was excited about the prospect of
coming to Port Elizabeth, a neutral venue forboth clubs but a citywhich is alivewith energyand hungers for sport as evidenced in the sup-port of other sporting codes such thePESevenstournament,” Nedbank area manager Mawan-de Shugu said.Therewas a lot of razzmatazzwith entertain-
