ReflectionCIVIC LETTER

I wrote a letter to the Raleigh City Council which: - Addressed the tourism impacts from sidewalk restrictions. - Discussed the economic impacts of such implemented restrictions. - Focused on the micro-entrepreneurs being impacted by the city ordinance.  What was learned: - Small voices can make a big impact. - There is a domino effect in regards to impacts on micro-entrepreneurs. - If the city wants to restrict sidewalks, they should be pushing for more tourists to visit the agritourism business.

Who, What, Why?Visiting two different agri-tourism

destinations of micro-entrepreneurs  who rely heavily on the visitors  and theselling of their products at local farmers

markets.- A first hand look at the complications

within  agritourism and the micro-entrepreneur populations.

- The desire to educate is president overthe desire to earn money from visitors.

- The small scale, hands on experienceswith these micro-entrepreneurs shows

their passion, knowledge and care forwhat they do.

TURNING OPPRESSION INTO OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN

ReflectionHealth Consequences

Half The Sky

Half The Sky addresses the oppression of women globally, in regards to socio-cultural dimensions, religious restrictions and more. Within the actual accounts in the book, it displays the impacts that take place. My study of the book was in

regards to the health consequences.

- The women in Africa face high mortality rates due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. - The monetary needs to help women in need are often disregarded and therefore leave women without medical

attention. - If a woman is raped, she becomes the property of the man responsible and these brutal pregnancies that result

often lead to death. - More money is spent on military funding in the United States than women's prenatal and pregnancy healthcare.

- Many women are left immobile or near death as a result of fistula, which occurs most commonly within the young pregnant girls who are not physically developed to birth a child at their young ages.

By providing women with an opportunity to succeed and education, they are more likely to protect themselves

against the negative health consequences that occur.

MICRO-LENDING AND OTHER FORMS OF OPPORTUNITY ENABLE VULNERABLE INDIVIDUALS.

MICRO-ENTREPRENEURS AND HOST COMMUNITIES THAT ARE EDUCATED ON THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES POSED BY TOURISM DEVELOPMENT, ARE ABLE TO SUCCEED AT BETTER RATES.

A STRONG FOCUS ON AN EQUITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM METHOD IS NOT EASY, BUT IT CAN BE POSSIBLE.

EVERY ASPECT OF TOURISM IMPACTS A COMMUNITY OR DESTINATION. AWARENESS OF THE "HYBRID" STAGE, MAKES IT EASIER TO ESTABLISH A STRONGER FRONT AND BACK STAGE FOR THE COMMUNITIES AND TOURISTS ALIKE.

WOMEN FACE SOME OF THE LARGEST DISPARITIES IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, WORLDWIDE, YET ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL ELEMENTS TO SOCIETY.

SUSTAINABILITY IN TOURISM DOESNT REFER TO JUST ONE ASPECT, WE MUST CONSIDER THE IMPACTS AND CHALLENGES WITHIN THE SOCIO-CULTURAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT.

PEOPLE FIRST TOURISM ENABLES MICRO-ENTREPRENEURS AND VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES WITH A SELF-SUFFICIENT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY THROUGH THE TOURISM INDUSTRY.
