A Message from The Chairs

Dear C200 Members,Welcome to this “special edition” of the C200 e-newsletter, featuring insights into the developing Strategic Plan. As you will see in the following pages, task forces are working to develop goals and objectives in five focus areas that you, our fellow members, have told us are central to the future of C200. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the members who are serving on task forces or otherwise involved in this important effort.

At the heart of the Strategic Plan is our unwavering commitment to the core values and beliefs we share as members. Core values resonate with members and inform our behavior. Our core values (included herein) include our mutual trust and support, our willingness to share our experiences and learn from one

another, our desire to advance one another’s success and to advance women in business overall, and our enjoyment of the one-of-a-kind experiences that we share together.

through our life transitions. Further, we believe that our exclusive membership standards ensure that we maintain our unique balance of corporate innovators and entrepreneurs, all at the top of their companies. We believe that as C200 members we are changing the face of business leadership and are having an impact on the future of women’s business leadership. We want to be known for our expertise in business and to serve as role models for the success of women in business.

By keeping these core values and beliefs central to the process of developing the Strategic Plan, we will develop the right plan for C200, one that guides our work to ensure that the future of C200 embraces the principles that led our founding members to form this great organization nearly 35 years ago.

With the planning task forces and subcommittees underway, we

sometimes forget that C200 is off to a great start in our “usual way” in 2016. Coming off a record year in membership, we have already welcomed six new members this year and encourage you to nominate a friend or colleague for C200. Two new Councils are underway with member interest in forming more this year. 2016 has already included exceptional programs, Fun Raisers and Reachouts. Much more rich programming is in the works and we hope you have already made a commitment to join us in Scottsdale for the Annual Conference in September.

We are honored to lead C200 and very proud to work with each of you on behalf of this extraordinary organization. Please read on to learn how we are working toward creating an even better C200.

Best, Laura and Roz

Strategic Plan Task Force Leader Update

HOW WE ARE KNOWN

LEADER: JAN MUHLEMANPresident, re:group, inc.

FIVE YEAR VISION STATEMENT: “C200 is recognized as significantly impacting the advancement of women in business and its unparalleled peer community. Known for our expertise in business, members are sought out as thought leaders in a variety of industries. Successful businesswomen leaders aspire to be invited to join C200.”

The C200 organization has historically maintained a low profile in business trade and consumer media. We fiercely protect members’ privacy and guard our place (physical and virtual) where members escape from external pressures. Yet, 80% of the membership has said that members want to be known as experts in business and that C200 should be known for its role in advancing women in business. Members have told us they want a strong brand and well-crafted communications that reflect the depth and breadth of our membership and the work of our organization.

The work of the How We Are Known Task Force will be informed by the goals set by the other Strategic Plan focus areas. Once we define how we

will ensure our Peer Community, how we will Advance and Engage Members, and how we will Advance Women, we will have strong messages to convey about C200.

Parallel to that effort, we are engaging a branding agency to help assess our brand and build the framework to support delivery of those messages including an update of our database and website. Beyond that, we will set goals and measurements about all of our communications – to our members, to prospective members, and to the world of business. When we do this well, we will achieve our vision.

PEER COMMUNITY

LEADER: RENEE PEPYS LOWEPresident, RPL and Associates LLC

FIVE YEAR VISION STATEMENT: “The C200 community is a sanctuary for the world’s most successful women business leaders and a resource to enrich each other and our businesses. Members are passionately supportive of each other and honor confidentiality. C200 members make personal and professional connections easily and widely across the organization.”continues on page 4

Member Task Forces have been formed around each of five strategic planning focus areas. Between now and June, each Task Force is charged with developing goals, tactics and metrics to implement the vision of each focus area. We asked Task Force leaders to tell us more about the work of their committees.

As we gathered member feedback for the strategic planning process, we heard nearly unanimously that C200’s essential peer community is what matters most. Members value the personal and professional connections with one another, along with the lifetime friendships that form through C200.

The Peer Community Task Force will establish goals that assure that C200 will continue to welcome only the most successful businesswomen into our ranks. We are working closely with the Membership Committee to craft standards for membership that not only require demonstrated success, but also call for the compassion, camaraderie and loyalty that we expect from fellow members. Our Task Force is also creating goals for the engagement of new members, to ensure that as they join, they recognize quickly and take advantage of the exceptional nature of our peer community.

ADVANCING MEMBERS

LEADER: JULIE FASONE HOLDER Founder and CEO, JFH Insights

FIVE YEAR VISION STATEMENT: “C200 members catapult their personal and professional achievements through unique access to members’ inspiration, wisdom, and a community of peers. C200 members offer exceptional expertise and experience, connecting with each other. C200 is each member’s resource for relevant information along their

career and through life stages. Member achievements are widely communicated and celebrated throughout the community.”

C200 members are passionate advocates and take pride in the successes of fellow members. We know we can count on one another for advice and counsel throughout career and life stages, as well as the opportunity to learn from one another individually and collectively.

The Advancing Members Task Force will establish goals which create formal and informal structures for members to support one another. We are looking creatively at C200 programs and infrastructure with an eye for increasing opportunities for members to connect and collaborate in ways that advance their personal and professional goals. And finally, we will look for ways to tell one another about member successes – in the Member Update, newsletters, on the website and in social media, and beyond.

MEMBER ENGAGEMENT

LEADER: ANGIE CHATTIN Retired Former President, CarMax Auto Finance

FIVE YEAR VISION STATEMENT: “C200 members are highly satisfied and value the opportunities offered by the organization to connect, share wisdom, inspire, learn, celebrate and have fun. C200 excels at offering opportunities for members to give and receive value through various career life stages and transitions.”Members value the unique mix that is C200: entrepreneurs and corporate innovators, women experiencing exceptional business success for the first time alongside women considering second or third chapters, and women in a variety of industries spread across the globe. We value this diversity for the richness it brings our membership and it is this very diversity that drives our vision of the future of member engagement.

The Member Engagement Task Force will establish goals that foster relationships and programming that members will want to make a priority in their busy lives. We want members to look to C200 for exceptional opportunities to engage with one another in ways which are meaningful, inspiring, informative, and yes…fun. Our goals will direct the creation of a palate of events and programs that appeal to members in all life and career stages across the globe. In turn, we will consistently seek member feedback to provide constant quality improvement in our activities and events.

members’ expertise in business, vast network of resources, openly sharing, relating to factors which impact women’s success, and providing support at critical junctures in the continuum of a businesswoman’s career.”C200 members unanimously endorse our mission to foster and advance women in business. Since the C200 Foundation was formed in 1987, we have supported over 15,000 women through Reachouts, Protégé Programs and our Scholar Network. Yet, we know we can do better. As we look to the future, members have told us that they want us to raise our game by defining and planning our efforts to lead to a measurable, sustained impact.

The Advancing Women Task Force is exploring how C200 might have a significant impact in three areas: young women in education, entrepreneurs, and rising corporate executives moving into P&L roles. Task Force members are using data to identify points of vulnerability and considering how C200 and potential collaborative partners can create meaningful programming with the potential to make a difference. While members will vary in their ability to participate regularly in the programs we envision, our goal is for all members to understand, support and advocate for C200’s role in changing the face of business.

The C200 Executive Series: Inside Insights into Strategic PlanningIn this new series, The C200 Executive Series: Inside Insights, we will feature the business experience and wisdom of fellow C200 members by examining an important and timely topic to provide a window into the passion, knowledge and expertise that exists within C200. Our first edition takes a deep dive into the topic of strategic planning as it relates to business and to the organization.

A special thank you to our Strategic Planning Co-Chairs Diana Peninger and Diana Reid for leading this important effort for C200.

C200: Based on your experience, what are the most critical elements of a successful strategic plan?

Diana Peninger (DP): In my experience, there are four or five critical elements. First, you have to have a vision and a framework for where you want to go. Second, you have to have a really good assessment of where you are today with stakeholders, customers and competitors. The third step is to identify your key strategic objectives. What are the gaps between where you are today and your vision for the future? From there you develop the “how” and dig into the tactics. Finally, you need to determine what results you can expect and set metrics – financial goals, cash flow potential, investment needs, etc. – to evaluate the progress of the plan.

Roz Alford (RA): Stakeholder “buy-in” – in the case of C200, our members – is another critical element to a successful strategic plan.

Laura Grondin (LG): It’s also imperative to bring your mission and vision down to the specific markets and products you want to pursue.

Diana Reid (DR): Yes, and the plan must build in key business drivers, both controllable and not controllable, with metrics to monitor. Through those metrics, an organization can stay aware of change, and be nimble to adjust the plan.

C200: How have you seen the strategic planning process fail, and what key learnings did you take away?

DR: A plan must be consistent with the organization’s core mission and values.

DP: A good plan is also only as valuable as how well it is communicated and how well we follow up. Sometimes we get sidetracked but we need to reinforce it, measure it and then it will be more successful.

RA: It’s also up to the leadership to act as a catalyst for the communication and reinforcement Diana is talking about. Without that commitment, it all falls off and no one knows what to focus on.

LG: Setting unrealistic deadlines is a huge barrier to success. The minute you start missing deadlines, it becomes the cultural norm. It’s also really important to be thoughtful about your allocation of resources.

DP: Strategic plans can also become stale if you are not willing to take risks or look far enough ahead. For C200, we thought a lot about the future and got a great deal of input from members – especially in the tech space – about incorporating that thinking into our plan.continues on page 7

C200: Is the strategic planning process different for businesses versus non-profit organizations?

DP: I believe that at the highest level the steps would be same. But for the non-profit organization there’s also the question of, “how often does the strategic plan change or how often should it change?”

RA: Right, sometimes in the non-profit world, people put these plans in place just to say they’ve done it, but there’s no implementation.

LG: On the non-profit side there’s also the distinction between a membership organization and strictly a charitable organization. I think when you are doing a plan for a membership organization you’re really looking at what the collective desires are of the current – and prospective – members. Whereas I do tend to think that the plans for charitable groups and/or businesses can be more about what the board or the executive team thinks that they can accomplish.

DR: For non-profits it’s critical to regularly restate the mission of the organization, especially when there is a long history and executive turnover. For a business, it’s vital to create and communicate that vision beyond financial results to achieve leadership buy-in as well as employee engagement.

C200: What makes this strategic plan for C200 different than anything the organization has done before?

LG: In a membership organization, leaders can come and go and sometimes you feel like your input gets lost in the sauce. I feel very fortunate that our members felt that we were listening, and understood that we have a robust process and a plan for creating our plan. We had nearly 2/3 of our members participate

in some way shape or form by giving feedback, and I think that’s extraordinary.

DP: Because of that, we’re going to have to actually follow through on metrics and share progress and be very vocal about it.

RA: I would add that having a mix of corporate and entrepreneur members participate was also critical to the process for C200. The corporate members helped keep us focused.

LG: The corporate members also had a sense of how important it was to get the words and the framework right – and the patience to spend the time to do it. Whereas some of us who are more on the entrepreneurial side probably would’ve tried to knock the whole thing out in a half an hour and been on to the next!

DR: The plan is intended to be a road map well beyond one term of the board of directors. And it is intended to focus members’ time and resources on having a measurable impact.

C200: What was the most remarkable thing you learned about C200 during this process?

DR: The major insight I had was how differently corporate executives and entrepreneurs approach long-term planning. That, and how the act of defining C200 is a Rorschach Test of an individual member’s experience.

DP: I was really blown away by how much passion our members had for the organization and their desire to make a difference.

RA: This time, even members who have never participated at all engaged! And I think it’s because the strategic planning committee asked them to be a part of the process.

LG: When we put the core beliefs and shared values in front of the board it resonated with people immediately because of the work that had been done to get us to that point. Being able to have core values and shared beliefs for a membership organization is fairly unique and I think it will take us a long way.
