Sponsor Spotlight: PNC Financial Services GroupPNC is a Main Street bank, not a Wall Street bank. This statement, often referenced by PNC Chairman and CEO Bill Demchak, sums up how PNC serves clients and communities.
With a branch presence in 19 states and the District
of Columbia, and additional offices in select markets
nationwide that support corporate, wealth management
and mortgage relationships, PNC focuses on individuals,
companies and organizations that share the same
geography.
“For private and public companies like yours, PNC has the
experience, expertise and innovative financial products to
match up to Wall Street firms,” says C200 member Diana
Reid, EVP of PNC Real Estate. “We develop strong bonds
with our clients, and it’s through these deep and personal
relationships that we’re able to deliver the financial
products and insights you need to thrive.”
PNC’s relationship with C200 began nearly 10 years
ago and since then we have collaborated on numerous
programs to inform and inspire women in business.
The first was in 2007, when National City, a PNC
predecessor, hosted “Women Who Excel,” an educational
event in Cleveland featuring C200 members Nina
McLemore and Laura Herring on a panel moderated by
NPR’s Lynn Neary. The most recent was this March. To
commemorate Women’s History Month, Reid led members
Nicole Geller, Roz Alford, Dorrit Bern and C200 Protégé
Sandi Webster in a lively discussion that included advice
on topics ranging from career advancement to work/
life balance. “Accelerating Achievement: Celebrating &
Advancing Women in Business” was broadcast live via
the PNC Intraweb from the bank’s Washington, D.C. office
to 18 locations reaching hundreds of PNC employees and
female guests. C200 member Charlotte McLaughlin, EVP
for Capital Markets at PNC, also participated in the event at
PNC’s headquarters in Pittsburgh.
C200’s Current Protégés
“In this unique collaboration between C200 and PNC’s
women’s affinity group, members provided a rich source
of professional development insights to women within the
bank as well as our female clients,” says Reid.
Other C200 programs sponsored by PNC:
n At the C200 Annual Conference in D.C., PNC is
underwriting keynote speaker Lynsey Addario, a
MacArthur fellow and photojournalist who covers
conflicts and human rights issues, often focusing
on the roles of women. Addario is one of 11 female
photojournalists featured in Women of Vision: National
Geographic Photographers on Assignment, a traveling
exhibition sponsored by PNC.
n As sponsor of the C200 Protégé Program, PNC hosted
the 13 Protégés in its Chicago office in June, delivered
an educational webinar on capital raising for growth
in September and is working with Protégé Program
Manager Sioban Lombardi to identify a PNC mentor for
each Protégé.
“Female-owned companies are the fastest-growing
segment of U.S. businesses, yet still lag their male
counterparts in revenue and employee size,” notes Beth
Marcello, director of Women’s Business Development for
PNC. “We want to help accelerate the growth of women-
owned companies, and the Protégé Program offers a
tangible opportunity to do that.”

membership or the nomination process.
Speaking of strategy, thank you to the nearly 200 members who
have already provided input to the Strategic Planning process.
Responses to the first survey tell us what members value most is that
C200 is an organization of true peers. In our second survey, we ask
members how we can build on that core principle: how can C200
support members both personally and professionally? Members also
tell us that they want C200 to support women in business. You will
see questions asking for specific ideas for ways C200 can provide
positive impact. And finally, members tell us they want C200 to be
better known as the premiere women’s business organization. You will
be asked to tell us specifically how you’d like C200 to be perceived
by the global business community.
Your voice is important to the future of The Committee of 200. Please
click here to fill out the second survey. Member feedback will also
be gathered over the course of more than a dozen focus groups,
nearly 50 1:1 personal interviews, and during a strategy session for all
members during the Conference. Would you like to participate? Click
here for more information. Thank you for sharing your views with the
Board and Planning Committee.
Our Foundation is having an extraordinary year of fundraising and
program success. Members of the current Protégé class continue
to achieve business success and we are actively recruiting our next
cohort. Reachouts have been held in Austin, London and Atlanta; as
a result, our Scholar Network now totals over 100 women. Two more
are on the schedule: Webster University in St. Louis (November 6)
and College of Mount St. Vincent in New York City (December 3).
Further ahead, our next international Reachout will be held at EGADE
Business School in Mexico City on February 23-28, 2016. Reachouts
are a great way to connect with the next generation of women
leaders. Please join us for an upcoming program if you can.
We hope you enjoy the new C200 E-Newsletter, with thanks to
our Communications Chair Andrea Keating for her leadership in
development and design. Your feedback is welcome—please contact
Kristin Keith with your comments and suggestions for future issues.
See you in Washington!

C200 Reaches Out in Atlanta
In mid-September, twelve C200
members joined Reachout Chair
Sally Guthrie at Agnes Scott College
in Decatur, Georgia for one of the most
compelling Reachout programs we
have held. Agnes Scott College is a
small, liberal arts women’s college with a
diverse student body and an engaged
and proactive faculty and administration.
In an effort to provide its students
with the best possible education and
opportunities, Agnes Scott College has
introduced a program called Summit,
whereby each student is guided by a
personal board of advisors and every
student, regardless of major, designs
an individualized course of study and
co-curricular experiences that develops
leadership abilities and understanding
of complex global dynamics. It was
clear in meeting the students that they
are curious and hard-working; without
question they are leaders in the making.
Our program kicked off with a lovely
reception at the school’s observatory
followed by dinner at the home of
President Elizabeth Kiss. The following
day, C200 members had the opportunity
to engage with students on topics
including “Land that Job! Tips to Help you
Take your Seat at the Table,” “Turning
Passion into Profit: Entrepreneurship &
Compassionate Capitalism,” “Ambition
versus Am’bitch’ion: Managing
Perceptions in the Workplace,” and “Good
Works: Do Well. Do Good. Change the
World.” They also participated in an
informal table talk, which turned into
lively and interesting discussions about
everything from interviewing for jobs to
living globally.
In the words of one student: “This
Reachout changed my perception of
business. I was minoring in business
management…now I want to major in it,
get an MBA, and start my own business.
It made me so much more motivated to
become a leader. It has made me believe
in the fact that I CAN become a leader.”
Our relationship with Agnes Scott College
will continue, as we offer the students
who attended the opportunity to apply
for a $3,000-$5,000 scholarship to
support a business-related summer
internship in 2016.
Thank you to Roz Alford, Martha Brooks,
Angie Chattin, Laurie Ann Goldman,
Sally Guthrie, Karen Hughes, Meredith
Leapley, Mary Madden, Penny McIntyre,
Susan McLaughlin, Janna Ronert and
Anisa Telwar for sharing your time and
treasured wisdom with these students. C200 Foundation Chair Roz Alford advises Agnes Scott College students

Protégé Q&A–Katherin Nukk-FreemanWhat brought you to the Protégé
Program? After founding and running
one of the largest woman-owned
employment law firms in the U.S.,
I decided to start another related
business to further help companies
build a better workplace and decrease
legal risk. My new business, SHIFT, is
a certified woman-owned provider of
highly interactive online HR compliance
training programs for all companies,
from start-ups to the Fortune 1000.
All of SHIFT’s top of the market
training programs are prepared by
award-winning employment law
attorneys with decades of experience.
SHIFT works with employers to
offer a comprehensive training
program which includes online and
instructor led training with consistent
messaging to address each level of
employee (C-suite, management,
non-supervisory). But we don’t stop
there. SHIFT partners with clients to
create a full circle approach to anti-
harassment/discrimination training.
SHIFT will provide assistance to create
enterprise-wide communications
that reflect a company’s mission of
embracing an inclusive and diverse
workforce. In addition, SHIFT will help
support a corporate statement of
values and respect that are part of an
employee’s onboarding process and
ongoing career training/advancement.
Finally, SHIFT can provide post-
training surveys to measure the level
of engagement and plan for follow up
training to continue to reinforce the
ideals of your company. While our main
mission is to protect employers from
legal risk by helping them establish an
affirmative defense to harassment and
discrimination claims, we also strive to
positively impact behavior and create a
better work environment.
When you were little, what did you
want to be when you grew up? When
I was six years old, I wanted to be a
performer. Singer, actress, roller skater,
you name it!
What entrepreneurs do you admire? I
admire many entrepreneurs and enjoy
reading about their strategies. One
such entrepreneur is the founder of
Spanx, Sara Blakely. From what I have
read about her, she was never deterred
from a business idea because of a fear
of failure. I read an article where her
dad would regularly ask her and her
siblings the question, “what have you
failed at this week?” I love this question
because it emphasizes that failure is a
necessary part of success, and life is all
about how you handle and deal with
your failures on the road to success. I
now ask my kids this question regularly.
What is your most treasured
possession? I don’t have any treasured
possessions. I treasure time with my
family the most over everything.
What quality do you most admire in
others? I most admire the quality of
excellent communication in others. I
always admire when someone can
effectively, positively and truthfully
raise and resolve issues in a way that
engages, and does not alienate people.
What is your favorite nonfiction
book? “David and Goliath” by Malcolm
Gladwell is a fantastic nonfiction book.
I love the concept of turning your
disadvantages into advantages and
being careful about your advantages,
because they too are a double-edged
sword.
What is your favorite fiction book? I am
an incessant reader of nonfiction and
not as much fiction (with three young
children and running two businesses,
it’s hard to find time for both). That
said, my favorite fictional book is “The
Exodus.”
Who is your favorite woman in history?
My favorite woman in history is Rosa
Parks, the “first lady of civil rights” and
“the mother of the freedom movement.”
What is your personal motto? My
personal motto (for my professional
and personal life—just ask my kids!)
is “there is a solution to almost every
problem.”
Where do you see yourself in five
years? In five years, I see myself on
the board of my employment law
firm but involved primarily in the
strategy and oversight of my online
training company (which I hope will be
$10 million in sales by then). From a
personal standpoint, I want to continue
to be happily married, with my three
loving children, who then will be 18, 16
and 8.
