Oswaldo Montoya has been a hard worker all his life. Before becoming an employee with Western Precast Concrete 3 years ago, Oswaldo had been working at Asarco driving lift trucks. He fractured his hand while doing his job and this led him to apply for a job at Western Pre-cast through a staffing agency. After receiving a call to schedule an inter-view, he impressed the owners so much that he started working the very same day. “I really like my job. My superiors and coworkers are very good to work with,” says Mon-

toya. He says he loves working with boxes and production and he wouldn’t want to do anything else in the company.

Montoya also enjoys horseback riding during his free time, which is a hobby that he acquired from his grandfather. “I’ve been riding horses since I was 15. My grandfather had several horses and he taught me how to ride.” He now has several horses that he cares for and rides on a regular basis.

Well Halloween has come and gone and what a party the Western Staff had. Costumes just keep getting better and better! Now we look toward Thanks-giving and Christmas. Time really does fly and nobody can imagine the changes that keep taking place year to year. These changes always seem to be positive movements into the future for Precast Concrete and our great contractors. This year we have added new and bigger forms to supply larger products to our custom-ers. We have replaced all of our aluminum panel forms so that special poured vaults are looking better than ever and more importantly they have tighter toleranc-es and adherence to plans. New tongue and groove forming systems have been ac-quired to provide better and tighter joints. Western continues to maintain our na-

tional certification and remains a top rated manufacturer amongst precast plants across the country. Western continues to update equipment on a regular basis so that our production, maintenance, shipping and office staff have the latest in innovation to get the job done. Our continued involvement in our national associa-tion, NPCA, is demonstrated by a Western staff member serving as Chairman of the Quality Assurance Pro-gram and another staff member serving on the Board of Directors for the association. This involvement keeps our staff at the forefront of innovation, changes, and new regulations concerning our industry. This upcoming spring will see our sixth staff member receive his golden hard hat and the designation of Master Precast-er. Quite frankly the amount of reinvestment back into our company to keep us modern and provide staff the tools to do the job are too numerous to list. Finally, and most important, Western continues to raise salaries for all employees and looks forward to eve-ry opportunity to thank employees for the safe and hard work each staff member does on a daily basis. So, as we wind down another year and begin looking for “Old St. Nick” , we stop and think about how fortunate we are to live in America , safely and so much better than so many that are suffering around the world. As always, thank you to our number one contractors in the nation, our El Paso Contractors, it really doesn’t get any better than this.

Winter has not quite arrived at this point, but

we are preparing all of Western Precast equip-

ment for its arrival to assure maximum safety,

operation, and warmth for our employees. It is

always important to test batteries and replace engine belts on the trucks and

forklifts to assure that everything is running smoothly. Plus, it is definitely

that time of year to get the anti-freeze out and inspect all of the heating sys-

tems in the trucks so that they are in perfect working condition. Don’t for-

get to check out Western’s new 2016 F350 Service Truck. It just arrived!

& Healthier Employees Happier Holidays

Western Precast recently held its annual flu shot day. Many eager em-ployees lined up to get their flu shots provided by the wonderful nurses from Summit Urgent Care Center. These shots were provided free of charge to the employees by Western Precast with the hope that all em-ployees will remain healthy for not only their own well being, but their

families and those they come in contact with . In the end, adding to their quality of life during the winter months. Although not all employee participated, Richard Alvarado stated, “We are always concerned for the health and well-being of all our employees no matter what”. Flu shots are one aspect of staying healthy in the winter months. It is also important to eat a balanced diet at appropriate times, stay warm, wash hands often, and exercise on a regular basis. All of these activities, along with the flu shot can help to avoid illness during the winter months. Providing the opportunity to obtain a flu shot and other health education related opportunities and events have shown to be successful for Western Pre-

cast and its employees. The end result allows for less sick days and having bet-ter overall health.

Western Precast recientemente celebró su día anual de vacunación contra la gripe. Muchos ansiosos empleados hicieron la fila para obtener sus vacunas contra la gripe proporcionadas por las maravillosas enfermeras de Summit Urgent Care Cen-ter. Fiber Reinforcement in Concrete By Daniel Quezada, Quality Control

In conventional concrete, micro-cracks de-velop before structure is loaded because of drying shrinkage and other causes of volume change. When the structure is loaded, the mi-cro cracks open up and grow because of de-velopment of such micro-cracks, resulting in inelastic deformation in concrete (shrinkage). Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) is a concrete reinforced mixture with more or less ran-domly distributed small fibers. A fiber is a small discrete reinforcing material produced from various materials like steel, plastic,

glass, carbon and natural materials in various shapes and sizes. In the FRC, a numbers of small fibers are dispersed and distributed randomly in the concrete at the time of mixing, and thus improve concrete properties in all directions. The fibers help to transfer load to the internal micro cracks. FRC has been successfully used in construction with its excellent flexural strength, resistance to splitting, impact resistance and excellent permeability and frost resistance. It is an effective way to increase toughness, shock resistance and resistance to plastic shrinkage cracking of the mortar. These fibers have many benefits. Steel fibers can improve the structural strength to reduce the heavy steel reinforcement requirement. Freeze thaw resistance of the concrete is improved. Durability of the concrete is improved to re-duce the crack widths. Polypropylene and Nylon fibers are used to improve the impact resistance. Have we used FRC in the past? The answer is, yes, we have and it is cost effective and it eliminates the cost of labor for traditional reinforcement. We have used it for small walls (walls for septic tanks), since the walls are very thin, the concrete is more brittle. With the addition of fiber reinforcement, we eliminate the brittle-ness out of the product. The only drawback from using fiber reinforcement is having some of the fibers exposed on the outer surface. This may cause the final finish of the product to be rough or different in appearance than anticipat-ed. Whether its fiber reinforcement, admixtures or curing compounds, Western Precast Con-crete will always be ahead of the competition and strive to use new technology to produce long lasting quality material for our customers.

La fibra reforzada de concreto (FRC por sus siglas en inglés) es una mezcla reforzada de concreto con mayor o menos cantidad de fibras pequeñas distribuidas al azar. En el FRC, un número de pequeñas fibras se dispersan y se distribuyen aleatoriamente en el concreto al momento de la mezcla, y así se

mejoran las propiedades del concreto en todos los sentidos. Las fibras ayudan a transferir la carga a las micro-fisuras internas. FRC ha sido utilizado con éxito en la construcción con su excelente re-sistencia a la flexión, resistencia a la división, re-sistencia al impacto y excelente permeabilidad y resistencia a heladas. Es una forma eficaz de au-mentar la dureza, resistencia al choque y la resis-tencia al agrietamiento por contracción plástica del cemento. Estas fibras tienen muchos benefi-cios. Welcome Gabriel is a parent of three; he has his hands full at home with a 21 year old, a 14 year old and a 10 year old. He was previ-ously working in carpentry and decided to make a change in his profession, which is why he started working at Western Precast Concrete. He loves everything about his job. He currently helps fabricate wooden forms for concrete casting but would love to be in the finishing department. “When I’m not here at work, I work at home,” he says. Gabriel is very dedicated to his job and to his family.

Sergio started working with Western Precast Concrete two months ago. He previously worked in maintenance at apartment homes. A friend told him about a job opportunity at Western Precast. He loves the hours because he gets weekends off. He really likes his coworkers and superiors. Sergio say, “My coworkers are an excellent team.” He currently helps to finish concrete, but he would like to be in the quality control department. During his free time he loves to exercise and play soccer.

Wireless Controlled Buckets By Jorge Rodriguez , Production Manager

Western Precast pur-chased three new wireless controlled pouring buck-ets for the production ar-ea, which have a dis-charge gate that uses a wireless radio operated side gate. These new buckets have been work-

ing great and have made pouring of concrete not only easier, but faster. We even use self-consolidating con-crete ( SCC ) in the buckets without a glitch. The pneumatic moving components on these new buckets are almost maintenance free. Another plus is that it is no longer required to manually open the door. This is a great investment for both time, safety , and outcome of product.

Western Precast compró tres nuevas cubetas de echado controladas de manera inalámbrica para el área de producción, las cuales tienen un sistema de una puerta corrediza que utiliza una puerta lateral controlada por radiof-recuencia inalámbrica. Estas nuevas cubetas han estado trabajando muy bien y han hecho que el echado del concreto no sólo sea más fácil, sino además más rápido. Incluso utili-zamos concreto autocompactante (SCC por sus iniciales en ingles) en las cubetas sin ningún inconveniente. Los lados del concreto se unifican en las formas y son casi libre de mantenimiento mientras se mantengan limpios y lubricados. Otra ventaja es que ya no es necesario abrir man-ualmente la puerta. Esta es una gran inversión que ayuda para el tiempo, la seguridad, y el resultado del produc-to.

Wire Rope Inspection By Billy Watters, Dispatch

When a rope has been removed from equipment and later fitted to the same or different equipment, it should be inspected after fitting but before resuming service. If at any time a change in the rope condition is suspected, it should be reported im-mediately and the equipment taken out of service until the rope has been examined by a competent person. As a result of this examination it may be prudent to review and amend the scope and frequency of the inspections. This means, that if there are breaks or wear showing on the wire rope during an inspection, then research is necessary to determine what may be causing the damage other than regular wear and tear. More frequent inspections other than just the beginning of each work shift may be necessary. Wire ropes should be inspected at the start of each shift, work period or more frequently, de-pending upon past experience. Usually this inspection will be carried out by the operator of the individual piece of equipment or possibly by a member of the work force specially appointed. At Western Precast , inspections

should be carried out by the crane operator , an equipment operator or a qualified trained inspec-tor, depending on who is more qualified to carry out an inspection . The inspection should be a visual assessment of the condition of as much of the rope length as possible, including the points of attachment to the equipment. An inspection is a careful and critical assess-ment of the rope and fittings carried out without dismantling and by a competent person. This should include, where necessary, a visual assess-ment of the internal condition of the rope, supple-mented by other means such as measurement and non-destructive testing. In order for end fittings to be examined properly they may need to be dis-mantled. One of the objectives of inspecting and exam-ining a wire rope is to supervise the normal pro-cess of deterioration so that the rope can be re-moved from service before becoming a hazard to safety. Another benefit of the inspection and ex-amination procedures is to detect unexpected damage or corrosion. Inspections and examinations, properly carried out, ensure the discard of a rope before failure. In addition, precautions can be taken to avoid a re-currence of damage or excessive wear to future ropes.

Miembros de la Asociación de Ingeniería Estructural de Texas - El Paso (SEAoT por sus siglas en inglés), recibieron un curso acelerado, y algunos créditos PDH, en temas relacionados con concreto prefabricado. Después del desayuno y de una presentación breve pero informative presentación brindada por Leo Feuerstein y Richard Alvarado de Western Precast, los ingenieros recorrieron la planta certificada NPCA y se familiarizaron con algunos de los productos y procesos de prefabricacion.

No sucede todos los días que la gente tenga la oportunidad de ver una estructura de 18,000 libras hecha de con-creto voltearse hacia abajo y salir de su molde. Western Precast tiene un proceso de producción muy preciso, con empleados calificados que orquestan la danza aérea perfectamente. Western Precast Concrete is honored to have had some of El Paso’s brightest structural engineers join them for an exciting educational experience. Members of the Structural Engineering Association of Texas – El Paso (SEAoT), received a crash course, and some PDH cred-its, in topics pertaining to precast concrete. After break-fast and a short but informative presentation by Leo Feuerstein and Richard Alvarado of Western Precast, the engineers toured the NPCA certified plant and be-came familiar with some of the products and process’ of pre-casting.

It’s not everyday people get to see an 18,000 pound structure made of concrete flip upside down and pop out of its form. Western Precast has production down to a science, with its skilled employees orchestrating the aerial dance perfectly. Precast concrete is becom-ing more versatile every day and has been adopted by many military installations, contractors and engineers for its time saving, cost reducing, durable method of construction.
