Principal’s Message HIGHLIGHTS Thank you for understanding and complying with our increased efforts to strengthen the security of Evening Street. Evening Street Science Fair. Please be sure to encourage your student(s) to begin preparations for

be extras available in the Evening Street office.

If you are available to volunteer as a "listener" for our aspiring scientists, please email Alli Woods

Help make a difference at Evening Street. Most schools have a computer lab, at Evening Street we have a C.O.W—Computer on Wheels. We entered the NBC Make a Difference contest to try to gain ten more laptops to add to our COW. Beginning February 4th through March 7th the public can vote for our proposal. Voting is limited to one (1) vote per Voter and per IP address per day. At the conclusion of the Public Voting Period, the voting results will be tabulated. Entries in each division that receive the highest number of overall votes will be declared Viewers’ Choice Finalists, for a total of six (6) Viewers’ Choice Finalists. Help our children who become frustrated when they cannot use technology to do research because the class computers and the COW laptops are in use! To vote, visit the NBC Make a Difference website.

Mrs. Jarzecki’s Music Corner

[email protected] In music class, the Kindergartners are working on counting syllables in songs, playing the steady beat, and differentiating between high and low pitches. The First graders have been learning the pitches So, Mi, and La and they continue to learn new songs on the xylophone. They have also been making up creative motions to the song, “Snowflakes.” The Second graders learned two songs and a poem about Martin Luther King Jr. They have also been singing the notes Do, Re, Mi, So, and La on melody flash cards. The Third graders have been playing non-pitched percussion instruments to the instrumental, “12th Street Rag.” They have also been working with a partner to sing and dance to “Rockin’ Robin.” The Fourth graders are playing “Follow the Drinking Gourd” and “B A Galactic Explorer” on their recorders. They also learned a song about Martin Luther King Jr. The Fifth graders just finished up an instrumental piece for recorders, piano, and xylophones. They have started their Broadway unit. The Sixth graders are working on their guitar unit and learning to play, “Ode to Joy.” The Sixth graders recently started working on their musical, “The Little Mermaid Jr.” which will be performed on March 21st at 7:00 p.m. at the Kilbourne Middle School auditorium. They will perform for grades K-2 on March 20th at 12:50 p.m. and for grades 3-6 on March 21st at 12:50 p.m. There will be a special show for parents and family on March 20th at 5:00. All performances are at KMS.

During the month of January I was back in the classrooms and discussed the following topics: Feelings (K), Feeling Angry (1st), Empathy & Friendship (2nd), Conflict Resolution (3rd), Bullying & Friendship (4th), Reputations (5th) & Healthy Coping Skills (6th). Topics for the month of February are: Feelings (K), Self-Esteem (1st), Self-Esteem & Respecting Differences (2nd), Internet Safety (3rd), Bullying (4th), Cyberbullying (5th), Cyberbullying & Internet Safety (6th) The Character Trait of the Month for December was Compassion and January was Tolerance. Throughout December & January, students & teachers were nominated for the Character Trait of the Month bulletin board. Their pictures were displayed with an example of how they showed these character traits. The following students & teachers were nominated for December (Compassion): Abby Stevenson, Mason Fields, Kate Stone, Gabrielle Peveler, Maggie Erickson, Pearl Schafer, Audra Pees, Mrs. Chizmar, Mrs. Benedict, Grace Hamor, Ray Jewell, and Mrs. Brinegar. The following were nominated for January (Tolerance): Abby Taylor, Maggie Potter, Riley Chase, Mrs. Matson, Kate Stone, Curtis Schriner, Mrs. Walker, Noah Hower, and Mrs. Gentner. February’s character trait is Honesty. Nominations for honesty can be made by staff AND students. If your child would like to nominate a peer, please have them see me!

Counselor Connection with Mrs. Stack ([email protected])

News from ‘Art Man’ (Mr. Moffatt) [email protected] The sixth grade students are working on a project with three objectives. Students created designs that will

demonstrate radial symmetry. These designs are used for a relief printmaking process. Finally, color will be

added to the finished prints. The colored print designs will demonstrate a variety of color theories, such as

analogous, warm/cool colors, or monochromatic. I am excited about the diversity of the designs and

creative expressions of the color choices within the requirements of the

assignment.

LIBRARY/MEDIA UPDATE Sharon Strock, Media Specialist

[email protected] Students returned from Winter Break and spent most of January taking MAP tests during our

library time. We will get back to regular rotations in February!

Kindergartners are now allowed to have two books checked out at a time! This change has

been very exciting for them! I will also work with their classroom teachers to support

instruction (February and March is time for their continent travel study!).

Sixth graders have been discussing digital footprints! It’s important for them to know that what is put on the internet,

stays on the internet! And, that you often don’t have control over who might send something you wrote to another

person! Look for a challenge in the near future! Can they or will they give up all technology for one day??? The

message to students is to be cautious, careful and selective with online usage!

Our fifth graders will be learning how to insert a picture into a document so it doesn’t distort, and will be learning how to

cite sources for those pictures. Learning how to format pictures correctly is important as their writings become lengthier

and more detailed. Bibliographic citations will also be taught to all upper grades (4-6).

First, second and third graders will be building computer and library skills over the next few months. Type to Learn will

be introduced to second graders (currently used with grades 3-6 to practice keyboarding skills).

Phys. Ed. with Mr. Brinegar

[email protected] Evening Street's intermediate students have been finishing up their floor hockey unit and soon will begin an

archery unit. Primary grades continue to develop their gross motor skills by playing a variety of cooperative games and a series of active learning centers.

Floor hockey intramurals is a ‘before school’ activity for students in grades 4-6. All the students that were

interested in playing will be assigned to a team, and then be given a schedule as to when each team is

playing. Each team plays once a week sometimes two. Games start a 7:30 in the gym. Students may arrive a few minutes before their games. Mr. Moffatt also assists with intramurals. I always find this fun, it gives

our students an extra opportunity to get some exercise during the time of the year when it gets hard to go outside and play.

The Eagle Café Shelley Warner, Cafeteria Manger [email protected] Watch for some changes to the lunch menus starting in February. We are adding some other choices for students, hoping to increase participation with lunches. Your paper menu should be coming home sometime next week. If you don’t get one, they are available in the office or on the district website under Food Service. With intramural hockey starting next week before school, a reminder that breakfast is available to all students from 8:00-8:15 a.m. each morning. The breakfast choices should be on the back of your paper lunch menus. So if your child isn’t hungry before they go to hockey, they can get breakfast here at school after they play! We are selling 16.9 oz. bottles of water for $.50 which can be purchased from their meal accounts as well. Thanks to all who are managing their child’s lunch accounts online! Don’t forget that you have to sign up for low balance alerts, they do not happen automatically.

A few quick reminders:

...Remember to send your Friday Folders back to school after you have cleaned them out. It is much

appreciated by the Friday Folder Team.

...The next PTA meeting is January 22nd at 7:00pm in the cafeteria.

...We can always use Project MORE Volunteers. The more volunteers (no pun intended), the more

children can be placed in the program. Project MORE requires 1/2 hour each week during which you will work with a student helping them with their reading skills. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Rykowski.
