European University Sports NEWSLETTER EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING The Executive Committee met on its first meeting, which was organised in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on Febru- ary 3, 2006. The members of the board were welcomed by the Rector of the Technical University of Eindhoven (Tue), which will host the European University Champion- ships in Football, Tennis and Volleyball in July and is cel- ebrating its 50 th anniversary this year. Following a renewed spirit of collaboration between EUSA and National University Sports Associations, the Executive Committee has decided to invite two Presi- dents of the associated member federations to each meeting. This time, Mr. Angel Ivanov, the President of the Bulgarian University Sports Association and Mr. Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, the President of the Lithuanian Students Sports Association, were present at the meeting. EUSA SEMINAR FOR THE EUC 2006 ORGANISERSThe first EUSA Seminar for the Organisers of the Euro-pean Universities Championships 2006 was organised in Eindhoven, the Netherlands on February 4, 2006. 45 participants were present at the Seminar, among them the representatives of the EUC Organising Committees, EUSA Technical Delegates and Members of the EUSA Executive Committee.

The participants were welcomed by, Mr. Gualtieri, the EUSA President and Mr. De Mooij, Student Sport Centre Eindhoven Manager-Director.Matjaz Pecovnik, EUSA Secretary General, presented the history of EUC, made general briefing on the terms and conditions of organisation, and provided examples for best practice. Subsequently the Technical Delegates and the EC representatives met with the Organising Commit-tees of their respective sport in order to check all details of the organisation and discuss the progress reports.

At the end of the seminar the representatives from the Netherlands prepared the presentations on the sport in the Netherlands and EUC 2006 in Eindhoven.

MEMBER NEWSBULGARIAThe representatives of the Bulgarian National University Sports Federa-tion, Mr. Angel Ivanov, President and Mr. Martin Petrou, Secretary-General were present at the EUSA Executive Committee meeting to present the new structures of their federation. At the NUSF’s General Assembly held on January 11th, 2006 a new Executive Committee was elected, the structure was changed and the new name of the federation became: Bulgarian Association for University Sports ‘Academic’. ‘Academic’ also boasts the strong support of the National Sports Academy and the Ministry of Sports. An internet site will soon be launched. The new e-mail of federation is: [email protected]

FINLANDThe Student Sports Federation of Finland (Opiskelijoiden Liikuntali-itto) elected the new President for the next two years term (2006-2007). The President be-came Mr. Jussi Ansala. Mr. Henri Latonen continues as a Secretary General of the Federation.

GREAT BRITAINThe British Universities Sports As-sociation (BUSA) is delighted to an-nounce Ian Randell as its new Chief Executive. Randell, 33, is the former Chief Executive of the Ladies Europe-

ISRAELThe University Sports federation of Israel informed us, that the new representative of the federation to the EUSA General assembly will be Mr. Yaron Prager, who replaced the retired Mr. Moshe Sasson.

RUSSIAMr. Oleg V. Matytsin, the President of the Russian Stu-dent Sports Union and the Member of the EUSA Execu-tive Committee was awarded with the Honorary Doctor Degree of Beijing Sport University. The awarding ceremo-ny was held in Beijing Sport University (Beijing, China). Congratulations!

The first EUC Handball will take place in Besancon, France from June 26 to July 1, 2006.

matches were played also in Besançon. The EUC will be played in seven sports halls, which are situated around the Student Campus.

CITYBesancon is the capital of Franche-Comté, on the river Doubs. The city is especially famous for its clock and watch manufactures; its watch school is world renowned. The city has also a lot of old monuments: Roman ruins, a cathedral (12 th -16 th century), and numerous buildings in Spanish Renaissance style, notably the Palais Granvelle and the imposing town hall. The city has 127000 inhabitants.

UNIVERSITYAn intellectual center, Besançon is the seat of a university (founded 1422 in Dôle and moved to Besançon in 1691) and a music academy (founded 1726). The University of Besançon has 18000 students. The University will be a partner in the project. Students will be accommodated in the Student Campus, where also the breakfast, lunch ad dinner will be served.

TRANSPORTBesançon is easily accessible by car, train, bus or plane. The nearest airport is Bale-Mulhouse, from where the Organising Committee will organise the transportation to the city.

SPORTBesançon has 120 sports clubs and hosts 4200 sports events a year. The women handball club of Besançon has been a champion of France for several times, while there are many players also involved in the national team. During the World handball Championship in 2001
