MGV SNCF Train Set for on-boardMeasurement at Great VelocityEric REBEYROTTE– Technical Manager of SNCF Engineering

EURAILSPEED - Milano – November 8th, 2005
OBJECTIVES FOR THE MGV PROJECT
Railway infrastructure is RFF property, but is operated and maintained by SNCF, which is the owner of measurement sets.
The MGV project (Measurement at Great Velocity) tends to replace a lot of different specialized on-board measuring sets, operating at various speeds, by a single high speed set (except for ultrasonic rail control).
MGV will operate on both high speed network and classical electrified network.
Area of supervision: all high speed lines and their connections to the classical network, main electrified classical lines (12 500 km).
EURAILSPEED - Milano – November 8th, 2005
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
The speed of the train (measurement at maximum line speed) allows it to be mixed with commercial trains, in order to maximize the infrastructure capacity.
The drastic reduction of specialized on-board measuring on-board sets (MGV replaces 4 sets) also contributes to the infrastructure capacity.
The measuring devices are modernized, and enhanced by adding new ones.
The data is digitized and collected in an IT process system.
The processing and validation is done in real time.
The control periodicity is increased at lower costs.
Control periodicity: High speed lines, every 15 days, Classical lines, every 3 months.
Operating conditions: Inspections: 48 weeks/year, Maintenance of train and systems: 1 week / 3 months.

THE MGV
Crew of 7 persons.
Tricurrent “réseau” TGV 4530:• 2 engines• 8 trailers including:
4 for the measures 1 for welcoming the visitors 3 dedicated to logistics
The MGV is built by refurbishment of the latest tricurrent (DC 1,5 and 3 kV, AC 25 kV) ‘réseau’ TGV manufactured (1995). This work is done by SNCF.
The train set is now completed, and will be equiped with measuring devices till the end of 2005.

The MGV speed (320 km/h) requires systematic safety studies to design and to implement the measuring devices and the fittings, in terms of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS). This is a major constraint of the project.
The MGV length (200 m) requires to federate information by means of a common localization, compensated by the location of the on-board receivers.
MEASUREMENT SPECIFICITIES (1/2)
EURAILSPEED - Milano – November 8th, 2005
SNCF has written specifications for every measuring device, and has chosen its contractors for the design and implementation. For catenary a preliminary research was necessary. A project team has been dedicated to this coordination task.
The MGV crew will measure, compute and validate the data in real time up to320 km/h. It will manage the abnormal values and transmit them to the maintenance centre for eventual alerts, in slightly differed time. It will fill in the validated data within database, and will manage the transfer of all the information to a ground database.

MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS (1/3)
Track Measurement Loaded track geometry – with inertial laser measure, will replace Mauzin inspection in 2006. Vehicle / track interaction – will replace Mélusine inspection in 2006. Axle boxes accelerations – new : short defects analysis, effective 2007. Rail surface defects – IVOIRE Video images RT analysis from a linear camera, effective 2006. Wheel rotation noise – short-pitch corrugation and specific defects, effective 2007.
Signalling measurementTo guarantee the safety of the train itself, measuring equipments of signalling control are
distinct from the similar equipments in charge.
Effective 2006: KVB (speed monitoring by beacon), Icc (short-circuit current) , BSP (phase-lock loop), Zt (transverse impedance), Rt (return of traction current), EPI (local transmitters of information), CRO (contact ramp).
Effective 2007: ERTMS.

Catenary measurement Catenary dynamics - new - effective 2006 Detection of electric arcs - new - effective 2006
additional Functionalities included laterWear of contact wire, Static geometry of the contact wire, Power frequency shape analysis
Telecommunications measurement - effective 2006 Continuous radioelectric coverage measurement: ground - train radio (analogic 400 MHz),
GSM-R Measure of the GSM quality: GSM-R, GSM of the three public operators
18 antennas, including 2 GPS + 1 reservation for a satellite antenna to come.
MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS (2/3)
EURAILSPEED - Milano – November 8th, 2005
Others equipments - effective 2005
Localization: precision of spatial localization is a key element to sample the provided data.
The localisation messages are given by a dedicated on-board network distributed on 200 m.
Related Measures: temperature, pressure, crossing of another train, detection of special devices.
Video: localized and digitized images are associated to identified defects.
Processing systems: on-board processing systems and databases, and specific ground data bases.
