EU: what is it about?
A BRIEF HISTORYO Origin:
collaboration at the end of World Ear II among the European leaders
O Purpose: cessation of conflicts and relaunching of commerce.
O Control over coal and steel for each country (used for cars, houses, roads and buildings, as well as weapon manufacturing)
O Cessation of wars O Economic growthO Better workplaces OBJECTIVESO Enough foodO Safety.
And you know what? O They were right. There’s been
already 50 years and we are only reading about wars in Europe in history books.
PRESENTO EU has had a long way to go.
O There are currently 28 states which are EU members.
EU MOTTO
“United in diversity”.
COMMON GOALSO To be prosperous and to have better living
conditions;O To maintain the current largest economic
space in the world.O To ensure peace and security in Europe and
in the world. Instead of entering war conflicts, they’d rather sit around a table and solve problems by discussing among their leaders.
O To grant al EU citizens the same fundamental rights and liberties, to live without discrimination and enjoy equal opportunities.
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
O MPs are elected democratically by European citizens every 5 years.
O European norms are elaborated by the European Parliament (which holds 751 directly elected members) and the Council of the European Union (made up of ministers coming from each member state).
O The European Commission proposes new laws and ensures that they are respected.
EURO CURRENCYO Many EU countries
use the same currency: the euro.
O It helps everyone travel easier across Europe, without exchanging any currency.
Environmental protection
O The Union supports research and innovation which can lead to great scientific and technological breakthroughs.
FOOD• EU establishes how
products should be manufactured and packed so that we know that they are all of good quality, irrespective of their country of origin.
• UE achieves so much for you and your family to be happy, healthy and protected!
O The common market means that people, products and services can circulate freely in the EU countries.
O The Union has a Charter of Fundamental Rights.
To be remembered!O In the European Union, there are 28
member states, of which 19 use the euro as their national currency.
O Euro coins have a common front side, while their reverse depicts a national emblem of the country issuing the coin.
EUROPEAN UNION DAY
O EU celebrates its birth on the 9th of May.
O At that date, in 1950, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, proposed the ideas which make the EU what it is today.
