Rumbo al Bicentenario

La pujante modernización de nuestro país, a la par de sus logros, produce una sensación de vértigo, principalmente por su acelerada globa-lización. Como respuesta a eso, la sensibilidad de la opinión pública se ha ido interesando cada vez más en los símbolos y tradiciones que defi-nen y reaniman nuestra identidad.

En este contexto, la Escuela Militar es una imagen vivísima para el imaginario colectivo. Sus actuales emblemas, aunque llegaron pru-sianos, hace mucho se volvieron chilenos; más aún, el ideal de O’Higgins fue salvaguardar la identidad conquistada con tanto sacrificio, creando a la Escuela como relicario de esos ideales y custodios de un brillante futuro para toda nuestra Patria.

Novum Editorial ha conseguido plasmarlo con acierto en estas páginas, muy oportunas, camino al Bicentenario.

La Dirección

In time for our Bicentenary

The new modernization of our country and all its achievements produce a dizzy feeling, mainly due to fast globalization. As a result of this, public opinion has increased its interest in those symbols and traditions which define and vitalize our identity.

The Chilean Military Academy is therefore a living image for the wonders of society. Its emblems, although many of them came from Germany, have long since been Chilean, and moreover, O’Higgins ideal was to protect this conquered identity with sacrifice, thus creating the Military Academy as a reminder of those ideals and as guardian of a shining future for all our homeland.

Novum Editorial has managed to accurate-ly write down all these achievements in these pages in time for our bicentenary.

El Sueño de los Fundadores

Hace casi doscientos años, un puñado de hombres tuvo una cita con la Historia. Ellos se atrevieron a soñar lo irrealizado. Aspiraron a un país que no existía, como antes el conquis-tador Valdivia, y fundaron una Patria con nom-bre propio: Chile.

El Chile más genuino todavía se reconoce en ese rasgo, que más tarde Gabriela Mistral llamó “voluntad de ser”. Es decir, la afirmación idealista, la convicción capaz de arrebatar una realidad donde antes no existía. Esos sueños edifican la realidad. Pues los grandes hom-bres se reconocen por la envergadura de sus ideales. Todavía hoy –con cada nuevo día que alumbra esta tierra– se está realizando el sue-ño de los Fundadores de la Patria.

Vocación de un país

Esa “visión”, sin embargo, es más bien una intuición de algo real. Es un acto de reco-nocimiento. Chile, en esencia, existía ya y pe-día manifestarse en el concierto de los pueblos con una voz original. El mérito de los Padres de la Patria fue saber escuchar ese anhelo. Aquella voz que supieron percibir se llama vo-cación, identidad; una cierta visión del mundo que compartimos y en nombre de la cual nos definimos, a la cual estamos vinculados con afecto, unos con otros a partir de ella, como en una larga familia.

Ver esa vocación con tanta claridad im-pulsó a los héroes que forjaron la tradición del Ejército chileno. La formación que reciben los cadetes, pues, lleva impresos estos mismos rasgos.

Esa formación no consiste en aprender la cadencia de marcha para representar hermo-sas ceremonias que evocan el pasado, ni sen-tirse hombres de Ejército por el mero hecho de vestir uniforme. La vocación militar no se alimenta de exterioridades. Los cadetes, más

The Founder’s Dream

Almost two hundred years ago, a handful of men had a date with history. They dared to dream what had not been done before. They as-pired to create a country which did not exist, as had conqueror Valdivia before them, and found a homeland with its own name: Chile.

The true Chile can be seen in the charac-teristic which Gabriela Mistral would later call “the will to be”. That is to say, idealistic asser-tion, the conviction to captivate reality where before it did not exist. Those dreams create our reality. Great men are recognized by the scope of their ideals. Our founder’s dream is still being made true today through every new man or women who gives something to this land at the dawning of each new day.

Calling for a Country

That vision, however, is an intuition of something real. It is an act of reconnaissance. Strictly speaking, Chile existed before and wished to show itself to the world through its original voice. The achievement of the father of the nation was to hear this yearning. That voice which knew how to perceive is a calling, an iden-tity; a certain vision of the world that we share and in whose name we define ourselves, a vision which we are linked closely to, along with others who share it, just like one big family.

Seeing this calling with so much clarity in-spired those heroes which make up the tradi-tion of the Chilean Army. The training which the cadets receive carries these very same charac-teristics in its teachings.

This training does not just consist of lear-ning the steps of each march which represents the beautiful ceremonies that the past evokes or makes them feel like army men and women just by using a uniform. Military vocation does not feed from outward appearances. What happens is that the cadets learn to share the vi-

bien, aprenden a compartir la visión de aque-llos hombres que lucharon las primeras bata-llas en nombre de la Patria, aprenden a amar ese mismo ideal que les llenó el corazón y, por el mismo motivo, a percibir mejor que todos, la vocación de esta tierra. Y a partir de este momento, se convierten en los guardianes de lo más íntimo y personal de nuestra Nación, a la cual saben que deben servir con humildad y heroísmo, con abnegación y disciplina, con lealtad y valor. Porque el uniforme solo luce cuando lo viste un alma íntegra.

En la forja de la adversidad

Todas estas cualidades morales juegan un rol muy vivo en la historia de nuestro país. Así como buena parte del mérito de nuestros ante-pasados consistió en el arrojo de intuir una rea-lidad nacional todavía muy en ciernes, la otra parte de su mérito fue el saber persistir contra la adversidad. Pues el Creador coloca a los pue-blos en las geografías que sean adecuadas para ellos, de acuerdo al propósito que Él les enco-mienda cumplir de cara a la Historia. Y a nuestra gente, la Providencia le destinó una geografía de privilegiada variedad en sus bellezas natura-les, cierto, pero en medio de las cuales emerge de tiempo en tiempo el rostro de la tragedia.

Hace falta fortaleza para reconstruir la vida después de un terremoto o después que el mar retorna a sus límites naturales, hace fal-ta abnegación para colonizar regiones de frío inclemente, para poblar soledades tan largas como el horizonte... en suma, hacen falta aque-llas virtudes que animan la vida de un oficial en formación, y que son el corazón del Proyecto Educativo de la Escuela Militar.

Porque, más allá del sacrificio momentá-neo, el cadete aprende, tal como nuestros an-cestros, que la adversidad es la fragua donde Dios forja el espíritu de los que quiere hacer grandes.

Convivir con el heroísmo que nos legaron los fundadores de la Nación no es un camino

sion of those men who fought the first battles in name of the homeland. They learn to love the same ideal which filled their hearts, and as a result, they started to feel better than anyone a calling for their country. As of this moment, they become guards of the most intimate parts of our nation, which they must now serve with humility, heroism, self-denial, discipline, loyalty and courage. Our uniform only shines when the bearer has an upright and honest soul.

Dealing with Setbacks

All these moral qualities play a very impor-tant role in the history of our country. Just as a huge part of the merit of our ancestors con-sisted in being bold enough to sense a potential national reality which was still in its early days, the other part of this merit knew how to per-sist in light of adversity. Our Lord and Creator placed towns in suitable geographic locations according to the purpose He intended for them in the face of history. His ruling did of course privilege our people with variety in terms of na-tural beauty but in which from time to time they had to deal with tragedy. Strength is needed to rebuild life after an earthquake or after the sea returns to its natural limits.

Self-denial is needed to colonize regions of harsh cold, to populate very lonely places… to sum up, those virtues that brighten up the life of an officer in training which are at the heart of the Military Academy Educational Project.

Why? Because beyond monumental sacri-fice, the cadet learns, just as our ancestors did before, that adversity is the force where God forges the spirit of those who want to be great men or women.

To coexist with the heroism that the foun-der of the nation bequeathed on us is no easy task, but it is something that knows how to fill our hearts. In spite of the natural difficulties and frights that training like this demands, there is one thing which we can have no doubt about: he or she who is enamoured with a great ideal has found true happiness. Military life creates bonds

cómodo, pero sí es algo que sabe llenar el corazón. A pesar de las naturales dificulta-des y sobresaltos que exige una formación como ésta, hay algo indiscutible: quien está enamorado de un gran ideal, ha encontrado la felicidad. La vida militar crea lazos que di-fícilmente se repiten en otras circunstancias. La camaradería de quienes comparten la mis-ma visión de las cosas contagia la vida diaria, dándole un toque de amenidad y recia alegría que establece una relación de armonía con los aspectos más ásperos de esa misma vo-cación.

Por eso, estas páginas no pretenden ser un compendio académico, o una publicación especializada a la manera de un diccionario o una enciclopedia; no. Estas páginas son un viaje a través del alma del Ejército, una mira-da abierta a lo imponderable en la vocación de las armas, y que a través de las imágenes quiere establecer un puente entre el lector, quien quiera que sea, y ese entusiasmo pro-fundo que impulsa a tantos jóvenes a hacerse miembros del Ejército de Chile, prefiriendo estas vicisitudes frente a la de una carrera tradicional.

Porque ellos saben que, en lo íntimo de sí mismos, la Patria los ha llamado. Saben que la bandera simboliza una realidad concreta y viva, de la cual forman parte y a la cual contri-buyen con sus características individuales. Sa-ben que esa realidad implica también un Ideal al cual ellos aspiran y que su generación porta-rá como un estandarte, en un desfile que cruza el tiempo desde los albores de la Nación. Se les ha encomendado, en fin, ser los guardianes de ese Ideal.

El mismo Ideal que un día vislumbraron hombres que hoy celebramos al pie de sus mo-numentos…

which are rarely seen in other circumstances. The camaraderie of those who share the same vision of things seen in daily life, give him or her a touch of amenity and great joy that create a relationship of harmony with the roughest as-pects of that very same calling.

These pages do not therefore seek to be an academic compendium, or a specialized publica-tion like a dictionary or an encyclopaedia. No sir. These pages are a trip through the soul of the Army, an open glance at the imponderable in the vocation of the arms services. We want to establish a bridge between the reader through these pictures, whoever he or she is, and that deep enthusiasm that drives so many young people to joining the Chilean Army, preferring all its ups and downs as opposed to a traditional career.

Because they know that, in the bottom of their hearts, that their country has called out to them. They know that the flag symbolizes a reality which is both true and alive, which they form part of and to whose individual charac-teristics they contribute. They know that this reality also implies an ideal which they aspire to and that their generation will carry a banner in a parade which crosses time from the dawn of our nation. In short, they have been entrusted to be the guardians of that ideal.

The very same ideal that men once visua-lized and who today we praise at the feet of their monuments…

El Primer Día

Ojos muy abiertos, expectación, silencio, ligero nerviosismo, sorpresa, admiración… Las filas de los que llegan a la Escuela Militar se alargan en medio de la curiosidad y la sen-sación de vértigo que acompaña a todo gran paso en la vida.

Los futuros cadetes escuchan sus pasos resonando en los mármoles del gran edificio, que ese día está consagrado a recibirlos y a prometerles que la vocación que los llama es tan amplia e imponente como la propia Es-cuela. En realidad mucho más aún, hay una sintonía íntima. Silenciosa pero no por ello menos profunda, a estos jóvenes –que llegan movidos por una intuición que recién empie-za a despertar–, los oficiales que los reciben y se hacen cargo de ellos –que también un día sintieron la misma fascinación, hasta conver-tirla en la médula de su vida– y el edificio, sus monumentos, sus banderas y sus emblemas –donde esa visión alcanza un estado de tras-cendencia intemporal, un fulgor de mediodía sin ocaso, perdurable como la Nación misma a la cual está llamada a servir–.

The First Day

Eyes wide open, a sense of expectancy, silence, a few nerves, surprise, admiration… The rows of those who arrive at the Academy lengthen in the middle of the curiosity and the sensation of vertigo that goes with all impor-tant decisions and steps in life.

The future cadets listen to their steps reso-nating in the marble of this great building. This day is for receiving them and promising them that the calling that they have received is as big and as imposing as the Academy itself. In fact there is an intimate harmony. Quiet but not any less deep, these young people –who arrive moved by an intuition that is just beginning to wake up, are received by the officers who will be responsible for them– who once felt that same fascination until it became the most im-portant thing in their lives, and the building, its monuments, its flags and its emblems– where that vision reaches a state of great importance, a glow of noon without decline, lasting just as long as the great nation which they have been called to serve.

Sentimientos encontrados inundan a los cadetes. El ingreso a la Escuela es un nuevo comienzo;

impone alejarse un tiempo de los lazos familiares, pero crear otros nuevos. Mientras una familia lo despide, otra familia lo recibe: la familia militar. Más allá de la tristeza fugaz, la promesa de una

recompensa superior flota en el ambiente.

Mixed feelings flood the cadets. The entrance to the Academy is a new beginning. It means distancing oneself from family bonds for a while whilst others are created. Although one family says good bye, another family receives him or her: the military family. Beyond the sadness, the promise of a superior reward flutters in the atmosphere.

El aspecto y la indumentaria son un símbolo de la personalidad. Por ello, en este nuevo comienzo lo antiguo da paso a un estilo propio de

la vida que acaba de empezar. Desde el corte de pelo hasta la forma de entrar en la cama, todo lleva el sello militar, y los instructores

se encargan de imprimirlo con vigor.

The appearance and the uniform are a symbol of the personality. This new beginning means old habits are replaced by a style which is unique to the

life which they have just begun. From the haircut to the way of getting into bed, everything bears the military seal, and the instructors are in

charge to vigorously make sure the message gets home.

Han dejado atrás las comodidades para bus-car las vías de lo impredecible. Es el camino

donde se forman los líderes, es una forma de vida cuya dignidad se basa en la defensa y custodia de la Patria. Porque los líderes se

forman, pero el liderazgo se conquista.

ResponsabilidadResponsibility

The recruits have left behind home comforts to find many unpredictable things. This is how leaders are formed. It is a way of life whose dig-nity is based on the defence and custody of the homeland. Leaders are formed but leadership is conquered.

Los reclutas, después de tres semanas de entre-namiento, de ir familiarizándose con su nuevo estilo de vida, con el uniforme, con los compa-

ñeros y con el servicio, reciben su fusil como señal de haber llegado a una nueva etapa.

The recruits, after three weeks of training, of getting used to their new lifestyle, to wearing a uniform, to their classmates and to the service, receive their rifles as a sign of having reached the next stage.

Los Líderes se Forman, el Liderazgo se Conquista

Rostros serios y concentrados, cuerpos cansados bajo el peso de las armas y el equipo, hábito poco a poco más desarrollado de for-mar un conjunto... El entrenamiento exigente va esculpiendo la fisonomía moral del recluta, poniendo a prueba su disposición y familiari-zándolo con las dificultades, a las cuales debe saber imponerse.

Los instructores movilizan a las unidades de reclutas mediante órdenes precisas y cla-ras, pero nunca dejan de seguirlos con cuida-do, atentos a sus necesidades, para enseñarles a descubrir en sí mismos las facultades que los llevarán adelante.

No hay mandato más avasallador que la propia resolución. Estas horas interminables de ejercicios militares son la cara áspera que complementa el brillo de los primeros días, sin dejar de guardar una íntima conexión con ellos. Son, por decirlo así, la aplicación concre-ta del idealismo, que de otra manera no pasa-ría de un ensueño sin relación con la realidad. El uniforme de campaña define el mérito para llevar el uniforme de gala.

Estos entrenamientos, son desarrollados en Pichicuy, amplio predio ubicado al norte de la capital y a orillas del mar.

Los accidentes del terreno y otros obstácu-los ofrecen las condiciones para la instrucción de los jóvenes, que van acumulando su primera ex-periencia en dominar la adversidad de su entor-no, y hacerse dueños de su propio espíritu.

Leaders are Formed but Leadership is Conquered

Serious and concentrated faces, tired bo-dies under the weight of weapons and equip-ment, the habit of forming a team which is de-veloped little by little… The demanding training sculpts the morale of the recruit, testing his or her frame of mind and familiarizing them with the difficulties they must overcome.

The instructors move the recruit units by means of strict and clear orders, but they never stop watching them carefully, attentive to their needs, to teaching them how to discover their hidden talents.

There is no an overwhelming force than resolution itself. Those never-ending hours of military exercises are the ruff face that comple-ments the novelty of the first few days, without breaking the intimate connection between the two. They are, for want of better words, the concrete application of idealism which would be nothing less than a dream without its rela-tionship with reality. The BDU uniform defines the merit to wear the gala uniform.

The training is held in Pichicuy, a big trai-ning field north of the capital city and by the sea shore.

Accidents in the field and other obstacles are the first instruction conditions for these young men and women who gain experience by means of dominating adversity in their entou-rage and controlling their own spirit.

From the beginning, training starts to unleash the warrior which they will in

turn become. This is where the right to wear military badges is won.

Tres veces al año toda la Escuela Militar sale a ejercicios en terreno, llamados “campañas”. En

ellas, junto a las habilidades físicas, se van for-jando las virtudes propias del espíritu militar. El “Ejercicio de Mando y Liderazgo”, por ejemplo, enfatiza el trabajo en equipo, donde cada cual

aporta lo mejor de sí para beneficio del cuerpo al que pertenece. El valor y la decisión son cru-ciales; aprenden ellos que la victoria no corona tanto a los veloces ni los fuertes, sino a los que

tienen fe y lealtad por los suyos.

The whole Academy goes out into the field three times a year. As well as their physi-cal skills, cadets build their military spirit in these times in the field. The leadership and command exercise for example emphasizes teamwork. Where everyone plays their part for the benefit of the corps. Courage and decision are very important. The cadets learn that victory is not reached by the strongest or fastest, instead of those who have faith and loyalty in their own people.

Los modernos campos de batalla han cambiado. Hoy por hoy muchas de las acciones

se llevan a cabo en ciudades y en medio de edificios semidestruidos. Por eso los cadetes

son entrenados para actuar de acuerdo al Derecho Internacional Humanitario.

Modern battlefields have changed. Nowadays, most of the action takes place in cities and in the middle of semi-destroyed buildings. As a result, cadets are trained to act according to

the International Humanitarian Rights.

Revista de Reclutas

Se alejaron por un tiempo de sus hogares, se sometieron a intensas semanas de entrena-miento, aprendieron posturas, saludos y disci-plina, cambiaron el traje civil por un uniforme bien llevado... Ahora, la oficialidad de la Escue-la lo examinará todo. Queda atrás la etapa ini-cial y llega la primera “prueba de fuego”, una de las etapas marcantes de la vida militar: la revista de reclutas. La expectación flota en el ambiente, pero también la unidad de convic-ciones y de mentalidad.

El nerviosismo contagia a la gran mayoría de los jóvenes, pero se esfuerzan por vencer-se a sí mismos y comunicar la seguridad propia de un militar. Como muchos dirán después, es-tos nervios se desvanecen apenas entonan los cantos. Cada unidad se transforma entonces en una sola voz, un solo corazón, un solo cuer-po, y exhiben ante los ojos de sus mandos los primeros asomos del perfil militar que ya se ha ido esculpiendo en ellos.

Si quizás les falta pericia y experiencia, les sobra entusiasmo y adhesión. Ninguno desme-rece el uniforme de servicio ni el simbolismo del casco prusiano, sobrio y categórico.

Cuando llegaron el primer día, estos reclu-tas se sentían ávidos, nerviosos y con muchas incógnitas. Quien los vea ahora, descubrirá que la inseguridad ha dado lugar a la abnegación, a la disciplina, el dominio de sí mismo y la lealtad a su Compañía. La semilla de su vocación ha ido floreciendo con vigor y lozanía.

Recruit Inspection

They left their homes for a period of time. They were submitted to a couple of weeks of hard training. They learned how to stand, how to sa-lute and how to be disciplined. They swapped a civilian suit for a military uniform. This first phase has come to an end and the first big test is upon them, one of the most important moments in their military lives: The Recruit Inspection. Expec-tation fills the air but conviction and mentality are also brought together here.

Nerves affect most of the cadets but they try to control themselves and portray a messa-ge of security, characteristic of a military man or woman. As many say after the inspection, the nerves go out of the window once you start to sing the different hymns. Each unit becomes one voice, one heart, one body and they show in front of their superiors the first signs of a military profile which have started to build in them.

May be they need experience and exper-tise, but they have enthusiasm and adhesion. None of them is unworthy of wearing the uni-form or the sober and categorical symbolism of the Prussian helmet.

When they arrived on the first day, these recruits felt nervous and they had many ques-tions. Whoever sees them now will find that all this insecurity has been replaced by self-denial, discipline and self-control and loyalty to their Company. The seed of their calling has been growing with vigour and lustiness.

Those veterans of command, platoon leaders, senior officers, cannot avoid taking a look at themselves and seeing their own military calling vocation which vibrates in harmony with these young men and women. That night, on the Main Courtyard of Honour at the Academy, it seems that all souls are one.

Alpatacal. Este nombre evoca al mismo tiempo la tragedia y el deber cumplido hasta

el final. A esta localidad de la provincia de Mendoza (Argentina) llegó, el 7 de julio de

1927, una delegación militar chilena, que viajaba a Buenos Aires como invitada del

gobierno trasandino. Aquí, el ferrocarril en que viajaban colisionó con otro, provocando

la muerte a 5 cadetes y dejando heridos a otros. Pero, a pesar de la tragedia, los

militares continuaron su viaje para honrar el deber contraído.

Alpatacal. This name simultaneously evokes images of tragedy and ultimate sacrifice. A Chilean military delegation arrived here in the province of Mendoza (Argentina) on July 7th 1927 which was travelling to Buenos Aires as a guest of our border country’s government. The train in which they were travelling crashed here, and with it the deaths 5 cadets and leaving others wounded. But in spite of the tragedy, these military men continued on their journey to honour their duties.

compañeros de promoción.

In Buenos Aires, 120 cadets under the command of only 5 officers paraded under the watching eyes of admiration and applause of the local population. The tragedy is relived every year at the Military Academy with the presence of Argentine authorities. In the photograph, Colonel José Bravo Alviña, one of the survivors, is present in the first row (now dressed as a civilian and bearing a walking stick) in memory of his classmates.

Juramento a la Bandera

Todo se mueve en vista de un objetivo. Para la formación militar, todas las facultades que se adiestran en el cadete no bastan para explicar la nobleza de este género de vida; su aire superior les viene del alto fin al cual sirven y que les otorga sentido: el ideal de la Patria. Este ideal es el trasfondo de los entrenamientos, de las ceremonias, las galas y todos los detalles de la vida diaria, incluso el menor. Un rasgo en es-pecial distingue el verdadero espíritu del solda-do: la disposición al sacrificio total. No es una carrera lo que atrae a los jóvenes que llegan a la Escuela; no es asegurarse la vida y velar por su propio interés. Al contrario, saben que de un día para otro tienen que estar dispuestos a despojarse de todo para sacrificarlo en el altar de la Patria. Tienen que cargar todos los días la cruz del deber, ampliar la medida de su espíritu para abarcar con él las necesidades, no de una persona, sino de toda una Nación.

La Vigilia de Armas es una expresión visi-ble de todo esto. Y de forma muy elocuente, se lleva a cabo en la Catedral de Santiago, el primer templo de la Nación, donde las ideas de sacrificio, deber cumplido y abnegación están como en sede propia. Pues el deber implica muchas veces crucificar nuestra voluntad para conquistar un futuro radiante; ofrecer la pro-pia vida por el bien de los demás.

No en vano, tantas condecoraciones milita-res tienen, justamente, la forma de una cruz...

Swearing Allegiance to the Flag

Everything is aimed at one objective. For purposes of military training, all the skills which are trained in a cadet are not enough to explain the act of nobility. Their air of superiority comes from above and gives meaning to the aims they have: the ideal of the homeland. This ideal is the undertone of all training, the ceremonies, the events and every aspect of their daily life, even the smallest detail. One particular characteris-tic distinguishes the true spirit of the soldier: a willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is not a career that attracts young people to the Academy. It is not a way of guaranteeing your life and looking out for your own interests. On the contrary, they know that one day or another they must be prepared to sacrifice everything for their country. They have to carry the weight of duty every day, to broaden their spirit to meet their needs, not those of an individual, but those of an entire nation.

The Arms Vigil is living proof of all this. It takes place harmoniously in Santiago Cathedral, the most important place of worship for our na-tion, where all those ideas of sacrifice, fulfilled duty and self-denial abnegation are present. Duty often means crucifying our enthusiasm so as to win over a brighter future; offering their lives for others wellfare.

This is not in vain however, as many mili-tary medals are justifiably in the shape of a cross...

El largo y majestuoso escenario de la cordillera es donde se produce el extenso

encuentro de dos naciones. Los cadetes también van allá para su instrucción. Deberán

convivir junto a la nieve, dominar el hielo y vencer el frío, imponiendo la fuerza de su

diferencia entre el éxito o una triste derrota; la montaña sólo se somete en conjunto.

This long and magnificent mountain range is where two nations meet. Our cadets also go there for their training. They must live together in the snow, overcome ice and defeat the cold, thus imposing all their strength of determination on all the adversities of nature. The cohesion of the group marks the difference between success and sad failure. The mountains can only be subdued through teamwork.

Glorias del Ejército, Glorias de la Patria

Desde que la Independencia de la Nación fue conquistada en los campos de batalla por el sacrificio de nuestros héroes, el mundo mi-litar se convirtió en una imagen indisociable de nuestra identidad. Los penachos, los pen-dones, las banderas, son un ícono que Chile quiere ver en Fiestas Patrias, como evocación de un pasado que es motivo de orgullo, un pre-sente que causa admiración, y la promesa de un futuro digno de las mejores esperanzas...

La Escuela ha querido encomendar pre-cisamente a los cadetes, a los jóvenes donde reposa su propio futuro, la presentación más memorable de la gloria institucional. Dado que el Ejército es la rama más antigua de nuestras Fuerzas Armadas, tiene la primacía en los ho-nores oficiales. El 18 de septiembre, para la ceremonia del Te Deum, los cadetes con sus blancos penachos aguardan ante el frontis de la Catedral Metropolitana para presentar ho-nores al Presidente de la República.

Al día siguiente, 19 de septiembre, Día de las Glorias del Ejército, la Escuela tiene una cita con el país. Todos los ojos se concentran en la elipse del Parque O’Higgins para contemplar esa hidalguía que nunca cansa. Pero los cadetes no interrumpen su marcha. Los destacamen-tos continúan a través de las calles del centro antiguo en la tradicional “Parada Chica”, que culminará en las cercanías de la propia Escuela luego de desfilar frente a la Municipalidad de Las Condes.

Es en la Escuela donde todos, acabado el día, sienten el alma henchida por el deber cumplido.

Glories of the Nation

The military world has become an unde-niable part of our national identity since our independence was achieved on the battle-fields thanks to the sacrifice of our heroes. The penachos, the banners and the flags are icons that Chile wants to see at the time of its national holidays, a recollection of a past which is full of pride, a present which causes admiration and the promise of a future which is full of hope…

The Academy has wanted to entrust its fu-ture in these cadets by means of the most me morable presentation of its institutional glo-ry. Since the Army is the oldest branch of the Armed Forces, it has first place in the official honours. On 18th September, for the Te Deum ceremony, the cadets, wearing their white penachos, wait outside the Catedral Metro-politana so as to pay honour to the President of the Republic.

On the following day, the September 19th, the Army Glories Day, the Academy has an appointment with the nation. All eyes are fixed on the Parque O’Higgins to observe chi-valry which never dies. Nonetheless, the Ca-dets do not stop marching. The detachments continue through the streets of the old city centre in the traditional “Parada Chica” which ends nears the Academy itself in front of Las Condes Town Hall.

At the end of the Day, everybody ends up at the Academy where the sense of duty fills our souls.

19 de Septiembre. Todo Chile quiere verlos. Los cadetes se han preparado con rigor.

Muchos, cuando niños, vieron pasar a otros cadetes marchando en la elipse, y quizás

ahí supieron cuál era su vocación. Este día, serán ellos los que encarnarán esa silueta

legendaria, para que otros vean en ellos el llamado de su propio corazón.

September 19th. All the country wants to see them. The cadets have prepared rigorously. Many, when children, saw the other cadets parade pass in the ellipse and maybe then knew that the Army was their calling. On this day, they will be the ones who personify this legendary silhouette so that others may feel this calling in their own hearts.

En el Hall de Honor de la Escuela Militar, el abanderado y sus escoltas reciben el Estandarte que abrirá la Parada Militar.

Abajo, los cadetes de la Escuela han ocupado su sitio en la explanada del Parque O’Higgins. Imagen impecable, casi evocando una fila de

soldaditos de plomo, pero que despierta el entusiasmo del público. La gente los mira con

orgullo: esos cadetes son el legado viviente del heroísmo que fundó la Patria.

In the Hall of Honour at the Military Academy, the standard bearer and his escorts receive the banner which will initiate the Military Parade. Below, the Cadets at the Academy have been waiting at the Parque O’Higgins. A faultless image, it almost brings to mind a line of lead soldiers that awakes enthusiasm in the public. People look at them with pride: those cadets are the living legacy of the heroism which founded our homeland.

Una Vocación Para Toda la Vida

La amplia variedad de aspectos que abar-ca la formación de los cadetes no está abando-nada a la improvisación ni el azar. Al contrario, mantiene una profunda cohesión en su enfo-que, para que cada actividad vaya esculpiendo el mismo perfil humano: un líder de carácter, comprometido con los valores del deber, del honor, abocado a una vida de servicio, no de interés, en beneficio de la Patria.

En efecto, la misión que se ha propuesto la Escuela es formar oficiales del mejor nivel, oficiales virtuosos, patriotas de carácter, hom-bres de inteligencia clara, abnegación y volun-tad, que puedan asumir con honor y eficiencia la alta vocación a que han sido llamados.

Complementando este énfasis esencial, la Escuela Militar comenzó alianzas con institu-ciones civiles de Educación Superior para dic-tar asignaturas científico-humanistas, como la Universidad Diego Portales, la Pontificia Universidad Católica y la Universidad de Chile, para otorgar a los oficiales de Ejército, junto con su nombramiento, el grado académico de Licenciado en Ciencias Militares.

En el ámbito militar, la Escuela ha iniciado también un estrecho programa de intercambios con la Academia Militar de West Point (EE.UU.).

A Lifelong Calling

The wide variety of aspects which embra- ces the cadet’s training is not left to one side nor is it improvised at random. On the contrary, it is deeply coherent in its approach so that every activity sculpts the same human profile: a leader of character who is committed to the values of duty, of honour, brought near to a life of service, not of interest in benefit of our country.

In short, the mission which the Academy has set itself is to train the best officers who are virtuous, patriotic in their character, men and women of clear intelligence, self-denial and willingness who can undertake with hon-our and efficiently the high calling they have received.

So as to complementing this, the Military Academy began to form alliances with civilian institutions of Higher Education so they could teach humanist scientific subjects, such as the Universidad Diego Portales, the Pontificia Uni-versidad Católica and the Universidad de Chile and provide officers with the academic degree of Graduate in Military Sciences, as well as the post of army officer.

In the military field, the Academy has begun a close exchange programme with the United States Military Academy at West Point.

One of the most advanced technology available is used in the virtual training firing range, the senior cadets train the use of the diverse weapons which the Army uses.Meanwhile, first year cadets broaden their knowledge of topography.

Equitación, fútbol y natación son algunas de las disciplinas deportivas que practican

los cadetes. Con todas ellas se pretende desarrollar, elevar y mantener la condición física de los oficiales en formación, a fin de obtener un alto rendimiento para soportar

las exigencias propias de la vida militar. Anualmente durante los Juegos Deportivos

Intercompañías, además de medir el rendimiento deportivo, ponen a prueba la unidad, compañerismo y creatividad en la

tradicional competencia de Barras.

Horse riding, football and swimming are some of the sporting activities which cadets do. We seek to develop, increase and maintain the physical condition of the future officers with the aim of obtaining higher performance so as to stand the demands of military life. Annually during the Sports Games between the companies, they test their unity, comradeship and creativity in the traditional cheering competitions, as well as evaluating their sporting performance.

Valor Courage

Los futuros oficiales son entrenados para actuar racional y eficientemente en cualquier

De la mano con la formación moral, existe el Servicio Religioso, que vela por las necesidades espirituales de los cadetes. Muchos alumnos reciben aquí los sacramentos y confían inquietudes personales al capellán, que como pastor y Oficial de Ejército, sabe conducirlos con delicadeza, tino y propiedad. Pues los líderes genuinos saben que la victoria exterior sólo es la recompensa para quienes primero ganaron en sí mismos la batalla de la integridad.

Hand in hand with moral training, we have the Religious Service which looks after the cadet’s spiritual needs. Many students receive their sacraments here and entrust the Chaplain with their personal problems, who as a preacher and Army Officer knows how to guide them delicately, wisely and correctly. Authentic leaders know that outer victory is the only reward for those who win their own personal battle for integrity.

Regimiento Reforzado N° 20 “La Concepción”, Antofagasta. Los soldados conscriptos reciben instrucción militar básica a cargo de subalféreces de IV año de Escuela, quienes realizan su práctica

profesional como parte del proceso de formación. Éstos han llegado a ejercer el liderazgo para el cual han sido formados, incorporándose a la vida diaria de los regimientos hasta en sus menores detalles, familiarizándose con las tecnologías más avanzadas de que dispone el Ejército y convirtiéndose, tras

estos cuatro años, en los custodios de la soberanía, de la identidad y la paz de la Patria.

Regimiento Reforzado N° 20 “La Concepción”, Antofagasta. The conscript soldiers receive basic military training from the 4th year senior cadets who are doing their practical work experience

as part of their training process. They have managed to carry out the leadership which they were trained for, taking up their posts in the daily life of the regiments even in the smallest details,

getting used to the most advanced technology that the Army has and thus becoming, after four years, guardians of sovereignty, identity and peace for our country.

Podría decirse, como al comienzo, que es el primer día. Los cuatros años se cumplieron,

y los alféreces están en el Patio Alpatacal, revisando los últimos detalles antes de su

investidura como oficiales.Pensar en los demás está en nuestra propia naturaleza, pero poner a los demás primero está en la naturaleza de los futuros oficiales.

As at the beginning of this publication, it could now be said that this is the first day. The four years are over and the second lieutenants are on the Alpatacal Courtyard, checking the last few details before they are named officers. Thinking about others is in our own character but putting others first forms part of the future officer’s nature.

a nuevos destinos, pero para todos un día de confirmación de sus más profundos ideales.
