From a young age children must be reminded and encouraged to look after their own belongings and be sure to collect them and take them home each day. Obviously labelling every item is essential. At school the staff are always teaching each child to take responsibility for their belongings and for their actions. The recent SRC bike and scooter licences are an excellent example of this. The children have been reminded that if the correct school rules and licence rules are not followed then there will be consequences. We are currently correcting the invoicing and will email statements soon. Up to this point, the online ordering has been an easy, efficient process! Thank you for your patience and understanding. Stewart House Clothing Appeal – Please donate unwanted clothing to the Stewart House Clothing Appeal. Clothing bags can be picked up from the office. Bags must be returned to school by Monday 25 June. Jodie Sly School Administration Manager ABORIGINAL EDUCATION PERFORMANCE KOOMURRI GROUP It is Sorry Day on Saturday and Reconciliation Week, next week. These are extremely important dates in our schooling calendar. In appreciation of these events our school was lucky enough to be involved in a whole day cultural event by Koomurri Group today. Due to the 2018 NAIDOC theme being ‘Because of her we can’ the focus was on women and how they contribute to their culture and society as a whole. During the day, the children were placed into four groups and rotated around activities. They were involved in the following:

• Smoking Ceremony & Welcome Song & Dance Show • Didgeridoo Show and Storytelling • Artefacts, Weaponry, Bush Survival (incorporating women’s artefacts) • Aboriginal Song and Dance (women’s perspective) • Aboriginal Art (mural being created with every student contributing) • Farewell Concert with Student and Teacher participation

All students had an incredible time and gained a great deal of knowledge from the day. Make sure you check out the newsletter next week to see photos and hear more about the day. Mrs Priscilla Wright Aboriginal Education Co-ordinator Assistant Principal (Relieving) Stage 2

K-2 NEWS K-2 Professor Maths Incursion On Monday K-2 students enjoyed a fantastic incursion with Professor Maths. It was a very informative visit with all students engaged in hands on learning activities that promoted their interest and enthusiasm for maths. Activities ranged from; number based activities, making 3D shapes, building objects, puzzle solving and creating patterns. Students worked in groups of four so needed to cooperate, communicate and work together to solve the activities. Students thoroughly enjoyed their learning and by the end of the session had morphed into Professors of Maths themselves. Special thanks to Mrs Smith for organising this terrific event.

LIBRARY LANE - FAMILY EDITION Thank you for the overwhelming response to our new Library Lane Community Art Project. Mr Radom has been beavering away this week getting the wood ready to continue handing out to families. It’s a big task and I thank you for your patience.

“Dalang-gal” Art Exhibition (Dalang-gal means talking place; we thank Gai-maraigal Elder Dennis Foley for permission to use “dalang-gal”)

Peninsula Community of Schools invites you to attend our exhibition in celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures on the

Northern Beaches.

Enjoy a showcase of artworks by students from Kindergarten to Year 12 attending our 13 Peninsula Community of Schools.

The collection has been created by considering the 2018 themes for the; Gai-mariagal Festival - “Because of Her, We Can!” Harmony Day - “Racism. No way!” Reconciliation Week - “Don’t Keep History a Mystery” and NAIDOC Week - “Because of Her, We Can!”

The artworks reflect the strength in the messages from these four significant celebrations and we welcome you to “Dalang-gal” to view and talk about these stories told through the eyes of our children. SCRIPTURE NEWS LAKES CATHOLIC PARISH SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM The 2018/2019 Sacramental Program will begin with the Sacrament of Confirmation on 10 August 2018. To be eligible for enrolment in this sacrament, your child must be a baptised Catholic and in at least Year 2. A compulsory parent information night will be held in St Rose Church, 4 Rose Ave, Collaroy Plateau on Tuesday 29 May at 7pm. Children are not required to attend. Any questions please contact Cathy at [email protected] BAND NEWS TRANSITIONING TO TERM 2 Thank you everybody for your patience and courtesy in what has been a very busy and disruptive start to a new term. Starting with our annual Band Jam (only a week into the term) followed shortly afterwards by a transition to 3 substitute conductors has been challenging, to say the least, for our volunteers, children and parents. But we’ve made it through with flying colours. The WHPS Band Program would like to formally welcome to the fold our new (substitute) conductors - Kylie Tyson, Lemin Luu and Natalie Mastroianni. We wish them all the best in their roles and offer them our full and unconditional support. If you see any of our new conductors roaming the school in a state of confusion, please offer them a helping hand. NORTHERN BEACHES INSTRUMENTAL FESTIVAL @ PITTWATER HIGH SCHOOL Our Training and Intermediate Bands will be performing at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival which will take place at Pittwater High School as follows: Intermediate Band - Sunday 17 June at 9.00am Training Band – Wednesday 20 June at 5.00pm This is a popular local event at which our bands will each be playing (in separate 90-minute sessions) with other school and community bands of varying experience. Our bands will each be assessed and commented upon with feedback given by a professional adjudicator. The band will also have the opportunity, within their respective session, to watch and enjoy other local bands of varying standard and perform (and be appraised upon) their own pieces in a concert format. This is an important event on our band calendar and all musicians are expected to attend and bring their “A” game. SENIOR BAND – NSSWE @ FOREST HIGH On Tuesday 26 June the Senior Band will be performing at NSSWE’s Winter Community Concert Series. The concert will be held in the assembly hall of The Forest High School (entry via the upper car park on Frenchs Forest Road - there is ample off-street parking in Frenchs Forest Road). The concert will start at 7pm and should finish by 9pm with a short break midway. These concerts always showcase a fabulous array of talent. So, if you can, please stay for the duration of the concert to support the other bands who have also worked so hard to participate. JAZZ BAND @ HARBORD PRIMARY SCHOOOL As a spinoff from the Pittwater High festival noted above (at which our Training and Intermediate Bands are performing), our Jazz band will be performing at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival - Jazz Band Sessions which will take place at Harbord Primary School on Sunday 1 July (the precise time is to be confirmed – but most likely after lunch). This is a specialised Jazz Band Event at which our Jazz band will perform (in a 90-minute session) with other school and regional jazz bands of varying experience. Our band will be assessed and commented upon with feedback given by a Jazz Guru. Our Jazz Band will also have the opportunity to watch and enjoy other local bands of varying standard and perform (and be appraised upon) their own pieces in a concert format. This will be the Jazz band’s first out of school performance this year. It is a very important gig in the run-in to our jazz festivals later in the year. “SECOND” IS THE NEW “FIRST” All Band members (including parents) should be made aware of a simple fact of band music: “playing the first part does not mean you come first”. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD…The first and second (and third AND…) parts of any band music are generally no more or less glamorous than any other. There is no winner in which part you play. First does not mean first, it means “harmony part number 1”. But it is no more important than the second or the third or the triangle parts. In fact, with its piercing shrill of brilliance the triangle often plays a critical part in the pyramid of musical sound…but is often fiendishly difficult to play properly. The part you receive is akin to the number of jersey you wear in sport. Wear it with pride. WHPS Band Upcoming Events: 17 June @ 9.00am - Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High School - Intermediate Band 20 June @ 5.00pm - Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High School – Training Band 26 June - NSSWE Winter Music Festival at Forest High – Senior Band 1 July - Northern Beaches Instrumental Jazz Festival at Harbord Public School (Harbord PS) – Jazz band 16 September @ 12noon to 4.30pm – Wheeler Woodstock – Jazz Band Warning: Please check your e-mail before all performances. The “Band Event Reminder” will provide updates on all band event details. As circumstances change, dates and times may also change. Late mail: Practice NOT until you get it right – but until you can’t get it wrong!

It is required that you provide an adult to accompany your child for the session. Please note that adults attending could be part of a crowd scene.
