NEW MONTH, SAME TEAM: Following last night’s 10-4
blowout victory over the Padres, the Dodgers continue their five-
game road trip (2-1) tonight with the middle half of the three-game
weekend set at San Diego. Los Angeles, which has been victorious
in 19 of 22 contests since June 7, extended its National League best
record to 54-28 (.659) and are now just 0.5 games behind the Astros
for the best record in baseball. Following the series against the Friars
and the off day on Monday, the Boys in Blue will head back home
to close out the first-half of the season with a six-game homestand
against the Diamondbacks and the Royals before the All-Star break.
The Dodgers, who have gone 6-1 against the Padres this
season, have not lost the season series to San Diego since
going 9-10 in 2010. Since the start of the 2015 campaign,
the Dodgers divisional record against the Padres is
among the best in the National League:
NL, Best Record vs. Division Opponent – Since 2015
Chicago Cubs vs. Reds 33-12 (.733)
Washington Nationals vs. Braves 34-13 (.723)
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Padres 31-14 (.689)
New York Mets vs. Phillies 31-14 (.689)
The Dodgers’ +147 run differential is the best in the Major
Leagues, 31 runs better than the Houston Astros (+116).
Since June 7, Los Angeles has outscored opponents 142-
76, and those 142 runs are the most in the National League.
CAN’T STOP SLUGGING: The Dodger finished the month of
June hitting a Major League leading 53 home runs, which is the most
recorded in any month in franchise history. Austin Barnes provided
two home runs in last night’s contest, as he slugged his first career
grand slam homer in the first inning and stroked a three-run shot in
the sixth for his first multi-homer game of his career. According to
Elias, Barnes becomes the first catcher in Dodger history to hit a
grand slam and a three-run homer in the same game. Justin Turner
also blasted his sixth longball of the season with a two-run homer in
the fourth inning.
The Dodgers, who have hit home runs in 21 of their last 22
games since June 7, rank fourth in the NL in home runs
(115), trailing the Brewers (123), Nationals (121) and Mets
(118). The team has hit 50 homers in its last 22 games and
is averaging 2.24 home runs per game during that span:
MLB, Most Home Runs per Game – Since 06/07/2017
Los Angeles Dodgers 2.27 (50/22)
Texas Rangers 1.95
Milwaukee Brewers 1.83 Source: Stats LLC
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Los Angeles joined
the Mets in the 50-homer club in June and with the Astros
and Rays each belting 52 homers in May, it becomes the
first time in Major League history that two teams hit at least
50 homers in each of two consecutive months.
SIMPLY THE BEST: The Dodgers lead the Majors with a 3.24
team ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and a .225 opponents’ batting average
while leading the NL in strikeouts (783) and shutouts (7).
The Los Angeles bullpen leads the NL with a 2.95 ERA (90
ER/274.1 IP), a 1.11 WHIP (1st MLB) and 316 strikeouts.
Kenley Jansen recorded his 18th save of the season (3rd,
NL) on Thursday with his eighth four-plus out save of the
year and has now tossed scoreless relief in 15 consecutive
appearances (17.0 IP) since May 23.
Following another great start turned in by Alex Wood (6.0
IP, 2 H, R, 3 BB, 8 K), who became the first Dodger pitcher
to start a season 9-0 since Rick Rhoden in 1976, the
Dodger starters currently lead the big leagues with a 3.40
combined ERA (174 ER/460.0 IP) and a .230 opponents’
batting average.
JUNE BLOOM: The Dodgers finished the month of June on a
strong note as they posted a 21-7 (.741) record, which is the best
winning percentage and tied their most wins in June in franchise
history, since 1913. Heading into this year, the three best Junes in
Dodger history came when the 1952, 1954 and 1973 squad each went
21-8 (.724).
Dodger rookie sensation Cody Bellinger lead the league
with 13 home runs and a .743 slugging percentage in the
month of June, while tying for second in RBI with 27. His
13 homers in June are tied for third most all-time by a
rookie in a single month with Jimmie Hall, who hit 13 in
August 1963 with Minnesota.
Justin Turner recorded his team-leading 26th multi-hit
game of the season (T-7th, NL) last night, as he reached base
safely in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3, with
three runs scored, a homer, two RBI and a hit by pitch.
Turner finished the month of June slashing .415/.519/.692
with 18 runs, three doubles, five longballs and 13 RBI in 18
games. He led the league in batting average, on-base
percentage and OPS (1.211) in June.
Joc Pederson also had a strong June, as he hit .304 (17-for-
56) with 14 runs, five doubles, six homers and 13 RBI along
with a .435 on-base percentage and a .714 slugging
percentage in 18 games. He ranked among the league
leaders in slugging percentage (2nd), OPS (1.149, 5th), on-
base percentage (6th) and homers (T-15th) last month.
HILL-TOPPER: Dodger left-hander Rich Hill will make his 11th
start of the season tonight against the Padres as he looks to record his
fifth win of the year. Hill last pitched on Monday against the Angels,
allowing three runs on four hits in a season-long 7.0 innings with
seven strikeouts as he recorded the loss in the Dodgers 4-0 defeat. In
five career starts against the Padres, Hill has gone 2-3 with a 4.97
ERA (14 ER/25.1 IP) and has held batters to a .205 average, while
striking out 26 batters in 25.1 innings.
Hill has been excellent with runners in scoring position this
season as he is holding batters to a .151 (8-for-53) average
in those situations, which is the third-best mark in the
Majors (min. 50 batters faced), behind just the Mets’ Matt
Harvey (.123) and the Nationals’ Gio Gonzalez (.101).
MILESTONE WATCH: Chase Utley, who finished Thursday’s
contest going 1-for-4, drove in his 998th and 999th career RBI with a
sac fly in the third inning and a solo home run in the fifth for his fifth
longball of the season. Utley is just one RBI shy of plating 1,000
career runs and will become just the ninth active player to reach the
milestone.
