Abstract : After colonizing Taiwan, Joseon, and subsequently
Manchuria, the Japanese regime encouraged its people’s trip to
colonies, leading to a boom of overseas trip to Manchuria and
Joseon in Japan. The Japanese regime established tourism policies
as a supplier of tourism and actively created tourist places. This
study is centered on examining the traits of colonial Joseon as a
tourist place by analyzing itineraries and tourist attractions of
colonial Joseon cited in <>, a tourist guidebook published
during the Japanese imperial rule. Furthermore, this study delves
into what the Japanese regime as a supplier of tourism tried to
show its people and its meaning. As a result, Japanese people’s
trip to colonial Joseon in 1920s was primarily a part of trip to
China and Manchuria, and the destinations were limited to major
cities such as Seoul, Pyong- yang, and Busan. On the other hand,
tourist attractions recommended by <> were mostly places
justifying the Japanese rule and showing the superiority of
imperial Japan. Therefore, the Japanese traveling colonial Joseon
sightsaw “Japan inside Joseon” rather than sightseeing “Joseon”
itself.
