1. This walkthrough will show you how to create an assignment in Canvas, add a required Enhanced General

4. Now, click on the Add Group button. Best practice is to name this group Enhanced General Education

Assignments. This will clearly indicate to students that they are submitting something specifically for general

education assessment. Click “Save.”

5. Now we can add our two GEA’s in this new assignment group. First, click the plus sign and then add your

assignment details. You need to use the #GEA1 or #GEA2 name so that the general education assignments and

rubrics can be automatically collected at the end of the semester. Your due date should match the due date of

the assignment in class, and your points should remain at 0. That way you can use this version of the uploaded

assignment just for gen ed scoring which is qualitative in nature. Click Save & Publish, and you’ll see your

assignment.

6. But we need to change a few more settings on this assignment. To do this, click on the assignment.

7. Then click Edit.

8. Here you can enter a description, which might be a good place to remind students why they are submitting this

assignment twice. Here is an example:

As a reminder, this course is part of USF's Enhanced General Education curriculum. This means that I

need to assess some of your assignments for the general education student learning outcomes. This

upload link is for that purpose. This is not part of your grade. Please don't forget to upload this

assignment for a course grade using the other assignment link in the module.

This language can change to say whatever you want. For example, maybe they are turning in the graded version

on paper. The points should stay at 0, the group should stay as Enhanced General Education, and Display Grade

should be Complete/Incomplete. You should also check the box that says “Do not count this assignment towards

the final grade.” Submission Type is Online, and the entry option is File Upload. You don’t need to restrict the

upload type unless you want to. Please leave the Plagiarism Review as “none” and leave the remaining options

alone. Click Save.

9. Now we need to add the required Enhanced General Education rubric. From the Assignment page, we’ll click on

the “Add Rubric” button.

10. Then click on “Find a Rubric” button. In the pop-up window, scroll down to University of South Florida, and click.

Then choose the rubric that corresponds to the type of gen ed course you are teaching (i.e., Creative Thinking,

IDL, HCD, ERCE, HIP). Click on the desired rubric, and you’ll see a preview of it on the right. If that’s the rubric

you need, click “Use this rubric,” and you’ll see it now at the bottom of your assignment.

11. The last thing to do is change a setting on this rubric so that it’s ready for gen ed assessment. To do this, click the

pencil icon on the right.

12. It is really important that you only change the settings and not the content of the rubric. Scroll to the settings at

the bottom of the rubric and click “Remove points from rubric” and then “update rubric.”

13. Next, we’ll look at how to use the rubric for scoring. Start by clicking on “Grades” to get into the gradebook.

14. Here you can see a student is listed with a variety of assignments. You can see the assignment we just created

has an exclamation point next to it indicating this assignment does not go towards the final grade. When you

hover over this assignment submission, you get a little blue box in the corner. Click that little blue box to access

more options. Then click “More details in SpeedGrader.”

15. Now we see our document on the left and grading area on the right. In that grading area we click “View Rubric”

to access the rubric.

16. You may have to adjust the window a bit so you can get the full rubric without scrolling. Now you can click in

whichever box describes your student’s performance for that area. You can see the area you are going to choose

turns green when you hover over it with your mouse. You can add any comments you want at the bottom,

though you’re probably going to do that in the version of the assignment you’re actually grading for the course.

Once your scores are in, click save.

17. You can see the rubric changes to only show the given rating. Don’t forget to mark the assignment as complete

where the grade is, and that’s it. In a real course you would have many students to score, so you can easily

access the rest of your students by clicking the right arrow up top.

18. And that’s it! Thanks so much for participating in the Enhanced Gen Ed assessment efforts. These data are

integral to continuing to improve the enhanced curriculum for students. You will also be able to see aggregated

data each semester by looking at the dashboard found on the Enhanced Gen Ed Assessment website.
