Color
Everyone in the packaging supply chain has a stake
in getting color right the first time. Successful color
management doesn’t just happen in the moment right
before going to print. The key to effective color
management is that it needs to be present throughout
the whole production process. From the moment the
brand owner decides on a color, over the designer’s
first creations, all the way through to the press.
Is it easy? No.
Is it possible? Sure, the right partner makes every-
thing possible.
” Standardization and proofing of process colors were made possible with the Esko solutions.Stefan Behrens, Prepress Manager, RAKO ETIKETTEN
” With Esko’s solution we can quickly and easily share color information. This saves many hours previously required for color conversions and retouching.David Piercy, Production Director, VCG CONNECT

Sustainability
Environmental consciousness has grown.
Sustainability and sustainable packaging have
become a worldwide priority driven by governments,
retailers, brand owners and consumers.
Is environmentally sound production necessarily also
more expensive? It doesn’t have to be. Packaging
companies can minimize waste, reduce shipping
costs and streamline your production.
Innovative creative design, careful material selection,
tools that focus on error reduction and dedicated
palletization and container load software: all elements
that will help to create eco-friendly packaging
alternatives.

Our customers
Packaging today has many roles. The most obvious
one being to protect the product during transporta-
tion from factory to fridge. A less obvious role,
but more important in today’s very fragmented media
landscape, is the role of packaging as a communica-
tion tool.
Stand out!
Packaging actively sells the product, connects the
brand with its consumers and adds value to the
product inside. Good packaging makes the product
stand out from competition and appeals to the
consumer with the right message.
In their go to market process, brand owners exploit
a mix of media channels amongst which packaging is
by far the preferred one, actually the only channel
that cannot be replaced by digital alternatives.
That’s why packaging is beautifully designed and
comes in surprising shapes, bright and vivid colors
and boasts exquisite finishing features. That’s why
consistent, top notch quality is a prime requirement
for every single specialist stakeholder in the
packaging supply chain.
13
Packaging designers
Packaging designers are crucial suppliers of creative
content. They understand how the brand message is
converted in an impactful design. Graphic design and
structural design (CAD) go hand in hand to create a
high impact brand expression.
Print service providers
Print service providers and converters support
brand owners with the process of brand execution.
A wide range of new tasks adjacent to the traditional
prepress role are growing in importance: project and
asset management, brand design, legal compliancy
services and cross media publishing. Today, expert
advice ensuring that packaging reproduces
consistently and meets all requirements is the core
competence of a print service provider.
Converters
Converters not only put the ink on the substrate. In
many cases they also produce the substrate that
ideally meets packaging specifications. Flexible
packaging converters master the extrusion and
lamination process and produce smart substrates
that extend the product’s shelf life.
Carton converters manufacture the board that
provides a superior consumer experience.
Corrugated converters develop the carrier case
with exactly the strength required. Label converters
understand the production process of labeled
primary packs and ensure the label will apply
without glitches.
14
Displays, signs, magazines...
Sign makers and display manufacturers produce
in-store marketing objects like shelf talkers, product
displays, banners and other POP items that support
effective product sales. Commercial printers, book
and magazine printers re-invent themselves constantly
in an ever changing business environment.
Get the job done
Regardless of the packaging or print specialty, all
designers, converters and printers worldwide are
challenged to produce to the highest quality standard
for offset, flexo, gravure, digital or hybrid printing.
Esko is the business partner that supports all these
customers with solutions that focus on superior quality
at the right cost and deadline, with respect for the
environment. Esko’s software, digital flexo and digital
finishing solutions get the job, and much more, done.

Our solutions
Packaging management
Before a printing press can start producing, many
critical components have to come together in an
accurate and efficient process.
Packaging is ready to be produced when the
converter has the right substrate with the right inks
and finishes. The correct brand colors are defined
and images optimized for the printing process. All
marketing slogans are checked, ingredient copy and
nutritional facts are compliant, recycling symbols are
added, the right barcode is selected etc. The layout
is optimized for finishing and all logistics, up to the
shop shelf, are clear.
Optimize speed-to-market
Managing such a project efficiently requires all
stakeholders to be connected with each other and
with deep knowledge and information on the job. The
goal is to optimize speed-to-market at a correct cost
and develop packaging with a maximum shelf-shout.
Esko helps brand managers to experience the first
‘moment of truth’ as early as possible. A packaging
management solution provides insight in the
packaging development process. A solution that
helps to anticipate potential errors while still early in
the process.
17
Packaging approval management
WebCenter is a 24/7 global communication,
view and approval tool. This secure internet-based
collaboration platform lets users manage projects,
review, annotate and approve documents. The
WebCenter viewer is unique in its kind with hyper
realistic 3D mockup viewing and version comparison
tools on multiple documents. Lots of embedded

Packaging brand management
WebCenter is the ideal packaging brand manage-
ment platform to streamline and control the
complexities of packaging brand execution.
Accelerate time to market and facilitate working
between diverse global suppliers. WebCenter is your
gateway to other 3rd party systems (PLM, DAM, ERP,
etc). Customization of the interface tailors to your
specific requirements.
Avoid expensive product recalls
The slightest content or design error on a package or
label can cause a very expensive product recall. Such
errors infringe with regulatory compliance and brand
guideline consistency.
Automated artwork creation eliminates error-prone
and tedious manual copy and paste workflows and
makes it easy to manage content for size, flavor and
language variants.
The Dynamic Content Engine facilitates secure text
input and includes approval functionality separate
from graphical layout. Content is communicated in a
structured way using the IPC and GS1 XML
standard establishing a dynamic link between
approved textual content and Adobe® Illustrator®.
19
Design
For packaging designers Esko supplies its full suite
of structural and graphics design software.
ArtiosCAD is the world’s most popular and advanced
structural design software for folding carton and
corrugated packaging design. With tools designed for
packaging professionals, product development, virtual
prototyping and manufacturing ArtiosCAD increases
productivity throughout your company and supply chain.
ArtiosCAD simplifies structural (CAD) box design by
making use of parametric libraries that support
industry standards of folding carton (ECMA) and
corrugated boxes (FEFCO).
Intelligent dielines – With certain panels tagged with
metadata, a dieline transforms into an intelligent
template to speed up design work and to guarantee
higher quality.
With ArtiosCAD Enterprise, you create a cloud
facilitating access to all production files, design and
material libraries. Conveniently and securely
accessible over the internet, ArtiosCAD Enterprise
connects all stakeholders, internally as well as
externally, to a unique production file.
20
No more duplication of data, no more searching for
that specific design, no more voids in the materials
database. And your customers have access too.
Don’t want to create a CAD structure yourself?
There might be a CAD design readily available in the
Shapes library, an online database of primary and
secondary packaging CAD files, including cans, bags
and pouches.
Integration reduces costs
Integration with Esko’s palletization software makes
it possible to optimize the package design and the
pallet layout for the logistics process.
Esko Cape Pack and Cape Truckfill use the same
ArtiosCAD design data to calculate optimal pallet and
container configurations.
Your MIS or ERP platform is where your projects are
initiated? Then avoid double entry of data and
integrate ArtiosCAD with your business platform. A
single data entry model reduces the risk of operator
errors and consequently reduces cost.

Adding the third dimension
Studio adds the 3rd dimension and holistic approach
to your packaging design.
Studio Designer illustrates Esko’s holistic vision on
packaging prepress: rather than merely showing the
individual items of a packaging project, each
component can be previewed separately or ‘in
context’, an enabler for faster, more efficient and
more accurate packaging design.
For basic folding carton and corrugated box designs,
for primary containers with labels and for all flexible
packaging designs including shrink sleeves,
Studio Toolkit adds easy-to-use structural design
tools to Adobe® Illustrator®. The CAD structures
provide for an instantaneous 3D virtual mockup of
graphics and structure. The benefits of having the
first moment of truth inside your favorite editor right
from the production data: now you can easily fix any
issues while at the start of the workflow.
22
Studio
Studio Store Visualizer

Recognized and endorsed by industry professionals for
their performance, all editors share the same packaging-
rich functionality like a barcode editor, trapping software,
3D previewing and SmartMarks.
PowerLayout is a sheet layout application for
packaging and labels. Graphic designs are automati-
cally repeated on the print sheet based on the
die-cutting data (CAD based workflow). Interactively
organizing the print sheet layout is of course also
possible, including the placement of print control
strips and registrations marks (SmartMarks) for
various printing.

Color Management
Color consistency, predictability and repeatability
demands a well-integrated color management
solution. Color Engine is Esko’s color profile database
ensuring consistent color communication from design
to the ink kitchen. The database combines CMYK
press profiles with proofer profiles and patented
spectral profiles for spot colors.
Color Engine integrates seamlessly with
PantoneLIVE, PANTONE®’s spot ink profile library ‘in
the cloud’ for real colors on real substrates. Spectral
ink profile data, used to formulate the spot ink at the
converter, is communicated from design to press:
a real closed-loop color communication process is
now a fact. Accurate color from design to print is key
in assuring that brand’s color expectations are met.
Equinox is a total solution for the implementation
of Multi Color Printing and Extended Gamut Printing
in packaging and commercial print environments.
Esko’s patented overprint model provides for a
unique approach to multi-ink profile support.
Multi-ink color spaces are fine-tuned and optimized
for best performance on the printing press. Flexibility
stems from Equinox’s ink vendor independence and
free choice of inks.
FlexProof is Esko’s proofing RIP, driving a wide
range of industry standard inkjet digital proofing
devices. Fully integrated with Esko’s color manage-
ment and workflow automation tools, FlexProof
embeds color accurate proofing in the workflow.

Digital flexo
With the first computer-to-plate (CtP) flexo device put
on the market at drupa 1995, the Cyrel Digital
Imager (CDI) is the worlds’ leading solution for
imaging digital flexo, letterpress plates and flexo
sleeves. About 90% of all digital flexo plates
worldwide are imaged on a CDI device.
The CDI comes in a wide variety in sizes and optical
speeds to precisely match the needs of the flexible
packaging service provider and converter. Your
investment is safe as it can be upgraded to keep up
with changing market requirements and grow with
your business needs.
The Esko Digital Flexo solution is an open system:
you choose what consumables you want to work
with. The CDI images a wide variety of media for
flexo, letterpress (steel & foil based), silk screen and
offset (wet & waterless) printing.
Setting flexo benchmarks
Esko’s vision is aligned on two axes: simplify flexo
plate-making and improve flexo print quality.
Automating and integrating the flexo plate making
process leads to consistent plate and print quality,
a reduction of plate waste and a tangible operational
cost saving. Smart automation for loading and unloading
the plate makes the CDI a true ‘plate factory’ with
unattended operation and less manual intervention
leading to increased productivity and reduced production
risks. Esko’s Digital Flexo Solution sets the quality and
ROI benchmark for the entire industry.
29
HD Flexo and Full HD Flexo combine high
resolution optics (variable between 2400 ppi and
4000 ppi) with advanced screening technology to
create dot structures in the flexo plate that perform
‘par excellence’ on the flexo press: smooth vignettes
to 0% in the highlights and optimal Solid Ink Density
(SID) in the shadows and solids. Fine detail, vivid and
saturated colors are the omen for superior and
consistent near-offset flexo print quality.
Inline UV and Inline UV2 integrate digital main
exposure and plate imaging in a single device to
shorten the plate making process and to improve
flexo print quality. Inline UV makes use of a digitally
controlled UV diode light source to provide full control
over the shape (shoulder and print surface) of the
print dot on the flexo plate. The Inline UV2 setup in
combination with advanced Full HD Flexo screening
creates a unique dot
shape that delivers the
best highlight quality in
combination with
perfect solid ink lay
down in all flexible
packaging applications.

Digital print
Digital print has become a mainstream printing
technology for label converters. Folding carton and
flexible packaging converters now also embrace
digital printing technologies as part of their produc-
tion workflow.
Smaller print runs
A main driver for digital print is the desire of market-
ers to reach consumer groups with a customized
product, even to reach an individual consumer with
a personalized product which obviously drives down
average print run lengths.
Combine this with the desire of brand owners to keep
inventory low and delivery time up and you have
a nice cocktail of opportunities for digital print.
Integration
Esko’s vision is that workflow automation and system
integration is a key requirement to succesfully
manage your digital print business. Shorter print run
lengths imply that more jobs are required to keep the
press productive. Adequate workflow automation and
integration of business systems with the prepress
department will avoid production bottlenecks.
Esko expertise under the hood
Digital print for packaging is ‘Powered by Esko’.
Most of the digital press vendors currently on the
market opt for Esko technology as Digital Front End
to their presses. MIS integration establishes a 2-way
communication between your business system (MIS
or ERP) and your prepress workflow.
The benefit is twofold: guaranteed color consistency
between conventional and digital print and an
increased number of jobs per shift without the
expense of additional headcount.
Variable Data Printing
With the Variable Data Printing (VDP) tools, packaging
professionals embed variable elements in packaging
designs including barcodes, numbers, text and
images resulting in a new level of automation and
accuracy.

Digital finishing
The Kongsberg family of short-run production tables
is designed for fast die-less digital finishing of designs
printed on a wide range of paperboard and display
materials.
The large versatility in configuration, tools and knives
make the Kongsberg table a fit-for-use choice for
folding cartons, corrugated boxes, brochures, signs
and displays, and many more specialty applications.
The ability to cost-effectively cut, crease or mill any
number of designs distinguishes Kongsberg tables
from conventional die-cutting equipment. A single
multi-part display, a hundred folding carton boxes or
a thousand odd-shaped brochures with variable

Streamline your large format workflow
Especially for the sign-making industry, with its wide
variability in substrates, a Kongsberg table combined
with i-cut Suite software provides optimal productiv-
ity and minimal waste.
i-cut Preflight checks incoming PDF files to make
sure they print reliably, which is a key requirement for
just-in-time digital printing. Possible print issues are
reported and resolved before going to print.
i-cut Layout also takes care of print sheet layout
optimization for both digital print and digital finishing.
Files are nested in a unique way, thereby reducing
material usage and preparation time for every job.
Unique features like automatic cut path creation,
back to front registration and automatic bleed
generation make i-cut Layout indispensable for sign
makers and display manufacturers. By the way,
getting files ready for printing and cutting can also be
automated with an Esko automation workflow.

i-cut Vision Pro is the industry standard for vision
registration and workflow integration, available on any
Kongsberg table. i-cut Vision Pro uses a smart
camera to register the actual dimensions of the
printed artwork and to adapt the finishing to the
actual size and shape of the printed graphics.

Enfocus Switch
Switch is a modular software solution that integrates
with existing systems and drives third party applica-
tions to speed up job processing, reduce errors, and
automate repetitive tasks.
Switch eliminates the need for people to perform
repetitive tasks associated with receiving and sorting
files. It automatically downloads files from one or
more FTP servers, receives them as email attach-
ments, or handles hot folders. It then sorts files into
different folders or transmits them to the appropriate
destination in a flexible manner, so that each is ready
for processing or archiving.
All of this functionality is driven by an easy interface
that depicts the components and steps of a workflow
using simple icons.
Enfocus has a worldwide network of local experts

that files submitted by clients who use Connect are
made with the correct settings and output without
problems.

individual users, Connect YOU and two for companies
who need to collaborate with many internal and
external users, Connect ALL and Connect SEND.
