Rauf did her Intermediate from Government College for women, Frère Road. Inthe class of ‘79 . she maintained the profile of an unassuming dedicated student. In her clinical batch there were mates like Safia, Farida, Farzana Butt, Zafar andJaved Mustufa. She did her house job in Medicine with Professor Sualeh Memonand Gynae with Madam Razia. Her married life started very early. The arrival ofdescendants deferred plans for higher education.

Raufunisa continued with the then acclaimed “School Health Service” enacted byJunejo in 1985. With children starting school, she revived the plan to do post-graduation by joining Madam Sadiqa Jaffrey at JPMC. She achieved MCPS andrealizing it to be petite entered the race of fellowship. She returned back to CivilHospital Karachi for advanced training. The time spent with Professors NargisSoomro and Nusrat Khan was very full of bustle. Night duties regularly, fifteenyears after graduation were a tough choice. As soon as Rauf did her finalfellowship it became difficult for her to continue in those tiresome corridors andso she quitted the service.

She started private practice in Godhra Hospital, New Karachi and the eveningpractice in Rab Medical Centre to her desired level of satisfaction. On the familyfront her three daughters did MBBS, MBA, Chartered Accountancy and crossedthe floors happily to their husband’s homes. Her son is an MBA and has started hisprofessional carrier.

Raufunisa is blessed with a peaceful home and professional life. Her only regretsare the early years of services when under duress she and many others had towork without any surveillance and the support of the senior doctors. “Trial anderror” method of learning is fraught with mishaps and misfortunes. Once she wasalone at a time when a lady was brought to the medical ward in an emergency. She was in gross cardiac failure. Rauf made a correct diagnosis and single handedlymanaged her. Prof Khwaja Muin’s appreciation came as a tap on the head whenthe patient was seen to enjoy a morning breakfast. Though the story ended on ahappy note but feeling of “loneliness” still frightens her like a ghost. Raufunisa is adevout practicing Muslim and she observes strict “Hijab”. Hence in respect of hersentiments only one photograph is being placed here.
