A Diction: The poet chooses to repeat the words music, sweets, and joy to create a sense of Harmony, a term commonly used in music, that serves to fit the theme of the sonnet. 2.Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy: B We should be focused on what we each want and appreciate rather than force our own expectations of what is right for citizens to do. We should all find our own happiness in our own ways. In this way we can be in harmony with each other. 3.Why lov'st thou that which thou receiv'st not gladly, A The speaker begs the question, why should you love something that isn’t healthy to love... 4.Or else receiv'st with pleasure thine annoy? B ....Or something that does nothing other than “annoy” you or upsets you. The speaker begins to speak of his opinion on love and marriage with a harsh outlook towards it. This becomes one of the main issues in the sonnet. 5.If the true concord of welltuned sounds, C Problem/Metaphor/Personification: the word Concord’s definition is “An agreement or harmony between people or groups” that along with “ welltuned sounds” serves to make it seem as though the sounds are people who.... 6.By unions married, do offend thine ear, D .... talk of getting married, something the character in the Sonnet doesn’t agree with as the talk of marriage will “ offend thine ear”.... 7.They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds C ..... The people who talk of marriage may be that of society itself as it is “chiding” or scolding the man, but at the same time is confused with the decision, as without marriage you will get no heir to your belongings. This also means no family and a life of Loneliness. 8.In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear. D Diction: Choice of singleness and thou imply loneliness and solitude. 9.Mark how one string, sweet husband to another ,E Diction: Mark in this sense means pay attention. Imagery: strings that are close together... 10.Strikes each in each by mutual ordering; F ...cooperate and move together... 11.Resembling sire and child and happy mother ,E ...seem like a happy family. These three lines use imagery, diction, and a metaphor to say the audience should pay attention to how beautiful cooperation and being together is, as well as having a family.
