1. Project Objectives

In this project you will learn how to use CATIA V5 for modelling Parts. CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Applications) is the advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Design) program of Dassault Systemes .

The step-by-step approach to solid modelling used throughout this project allows you to create:

Parts solid models Assembly model Parts CAD drawings

Following the step-by-step solid modelling instructions you will be able to:

Generate solid models of the gear box parts Generate the gear box assembly model using the gear box parts models Generate detailed/manufacturing CAD drawings from the parts models Create the DESIGN PORTFOLIO to present:

o the Gear Box parts models you generated in the project o the CAD drawings that you extracted from your parts models

2. Modelling Features and Parts in CATIA

CATIA is a high-end Mechanical CAD (MCAD) application.

CATIA was firstly developed by Dassault Systemes for advanced CAD application in the aircraft industry. Currently CATIA is also used in manufacturing industry.

This project requires you to generate solid models of simple parts/mechanical components that incorporate typical part-design features.

The solid modelling approach you use in this project is that of:o part-design through three-dimensional (solid) modelling starting from

a base feature & o bottom-up assembly design to create the Gear Box Assembly

Model from the Gear Box parts models you generated.

3. Features, Design Constraints and Design Intent

The building blocks of parts are the part features. CATIA software generates CAD part features from CAD sketches. The CAD part features generated can be:

Base features. Applied features.

The part CAD models generated accordingly result as: Primitive solids. Feature-based solids with complex geometry.

CATIA is a parametric CAD modeller that allows design dynamic changes, by changing of the sketches and model features at any time during the design process. Design constraints of CAD sketches and CAD model features allow change of:

Dimensions/Dimensional constraints. Geometric relationships/Geometric constraints.

Dimensions/Dimensional constraints drive CAD sketches and model features. Geometric relationships/constraints are used to maintain the design intent. The Design intent is the design engineer’s plan on how to generate the solid model of a part in order to correctly convey its visual and functional aspects. Taking the design intent into account before and during the modelling of a part is important to achieve the most efficient solid model of the part. The techniques used to create the part CAD model affect how the model behaves when it is changed during its life cycle. The methods used to generate a solid model also influence the model accuracy and properties, including its flexibility to changes, its stability during the change process and the resource requirements for computing the new model.

NOTES: This Gear Box Assembly has 6 parts. For work progress purposes the all 6 Gear Box Parts diagrams are listed in week 7. Each student must select min. 3 parts and generate 3 parts drawings. Please check which ones you select.

Please Revise:Engineering Design Project and Deign Portfolio Brief Update 1Update 1 Notes: Week 6 / 12 April 2012

1. Drawing layouts provided are orthographic sketches, which must be used as Engineering Design Exercises for engineering modification of existing engineering documents/drawings.Before using these sketches for generating 3D solid models of parts, they require analysis, interpretation and changes such that to be adapted to suit functions and mating relationships of individual parts/components of the Gear Box Assembly/Product.The adaptation of the provided sketches is required as part of the project tasks with the purpose of making the given sketches compliant to AS1100-101 and then transforming them into the CAD sketches required for generation of solid models base features.

2. The 3D solid models of parts that will be generated must not copy as such the sketches provided, which may contain incomplete information that require student’s input as part of Engineering Design Exercises integrated into this project.

3. Starting from the given sketches, adaptation and modification of dimensions must be completed only after full understanding of each individual feature and of the relating features of the given component with its mating component/components in the assembly.This project task may require analysis of the part geometric references and manufacturing references.

4. Part geometric references and manufacturing references are partially provided on the given orthographic layouts, and for full understanding of the functions and sizes of a part from the sketches provided, the student may need to gather engineering design information from different sources, including AS1100-101 Technical Drawing fundamentals, other standards and some Mechanical Design References.

5. Final dimensions and geometric references for generation of the 3D part models must be completed after full understanding of each part feature and of the part features related with other assembly components.
