I once visited a family that had twenty-nine cats. And that’s just inside the mobile home. There were a dozen more by the front steps.

Here is the thing. Every one of the cats had been rescued. All were injured, sick or abandoned at one time. Some of you have pets like that.

Fred Craddock was with his young children when they saw a small kitten on the side of the road. “Pick it up daddy. It’s gonna die.” Reluctantly he stops. The kitten is skin and bones, sore-eyed and full of fleas. When he reaches down to pick it up, the kitten bristles, and bares its claws. Hiss.

Three weeks later the kitten is clean, strong and healthy. Now the kitten rubs gently against Fred’s leg. No claws or hissing. He arches his back to receive a caress. It is not the small frightened kitten anymore.

Fred Craddock then writes. “You know as well as I what made the difference. Not too long ago God reached out a hand to bless me and my family. When God did, I looked at that hand; it was covered with scratches.”

While taking a test at Samford University, Dr. Edwards ask us a bonus question. “Who is the maintenance man in our chapel?” No one seemed to know. He then said. “In ministry you will meet many people. They all are important. They all need to be noticed and loved. I’ll always remember that day. I also left class to meet Daniel as he swept the sidewalk.”

While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

I’ll see you Sunday at the rescue mission.

P.S. Praise the Lord for the nine baptisms we had on Easter Sunday.
