Inland Navigation

► Inland waterways - main features: Rivers, tributaries, canals and lakes Range of navigation:IN(Hs <= 2 m) Navigation in crowded regions

► Inland vessels vs seagoing vessels: Vessel design Mode of operation Regulatory requirements

►Specificities implemented by: Development of dedicated inland

navigation Rules (1935) Creation of a dedicated entity in

charge of inland navigation activities (DNI)

Inland Navigation R&D : What ?

Loads Calculation ► Development of simplified formulae for loads prediction

Structural Analysis ► Structural behaviour modelling & development of simplified formulae for hull scantling

Hull-Superstructure interaction ► Hull girder stress distribution on multiple-deck vessels

Hull girder deflection (y) ► y <= y(p) - check needed where L/D > r(p)

Hydrodynamic behaviour ► Suitability of inland vessels for restricted navigation at sea

Structure crashworthiness Analysis

►E.g.: Alternative constructions within the scope of ADN Regulations

Analysis of Fluid flow in cargo tank venting systems

► Influence of different parameters on maximum loading/unloading flow rate compatible with cargo tank strength

Fatigue Analysis ►Vessels operated on IN(1,2) water stretches or more

► Structural design of a modular high speed ferry catamaran for inland navigation

Master thesis topic 1

► Main features: Dimensions:38,00 x 10,30 x 2,00 m (hull beam: 2,00 m)

Displacement: 120 t / Aluminium alloy

Range of navigation IN (1,2)

Service speed: 40 km/h

► Structural arrangement Hulls made of several modules connected by bolts

Connection of hulls by cross beams connected to hulls by bolts

Superstructure forms a separate module mounted on cross beams

► Design procedure will include: Analysis and calculation of design loads

Scantling of structural elements

Scantling of modules connections

Examination of the structural behaviour using FEA of the whole vessel.

►Structural and fatigue analysis of a type C tank vessel hull at class renewal number IV

Master thesis topic 2

► Classed vessels are subjected to periodical & class renewal surveys for maintenance of class

► Class renewal number IV applies to vessels of more than 15 years old and includes thickness measurements (TM) with scope & extent according to BV Rules are required

► Structural & fatigue analysis to be carried out: On corroded vessel hull according to TM report (will be put at

your disposal) Using direct engineering calculations Using FEM calculations

► Analysis report will include: A report on the structural strength calculations and

identification of hot spots A report on fatigue analysis (identification of structural items

found critical for fatigue) Recommendations on structural areas/items to be repaired or

replaced Recommendations on structural areas/items to be monitored.
