ENTERPRIS E M USIC S COTLAND EMS NEWS MUSIC EDUCATION MATTERS Enterprise Music Scotland’s first education conference, Music Education Matters, took place on Friday 30th May 2014 at The Arches, Glasgow! The event attracted two hundred delegates, representing the wide range of individuals and organisations that are involved in making music education activity happen in Scotland and beyond. The one-day conference provided an opportunity to network, discuss issues and to showcase examples of some of the great projects happening right now in Scotland. Following a thought-provoking opening address from Dr Stephen Broad there was a choice of sessions; leading educationalist Paul Harris showcased effective group teaching methods, NYCoS Education Director Lucinda Geoghegan discussed the essential building blocks of early year’s music education and Andrew Dickie demonstrated how to build a website for your department in just 20 minutes! One of the most moving and inspirational moments during the day came before lunch when Dr Gareth Williams & Dr Rachel Drury presented Breath Cycle - a project run by Scottish Opera and Gartnaval General Hospital which improved the well-being of cystic fibrosis patients through singing. The afternoon session began for everyone with a crash course in beatboxing by former member of the Swingle Singers, Tobias Hug. The choice for delegates in the afternoon was Dr Oliver Searle’s Introduction to composition, Live Music Live Music Now! Scotland’s presentation ‘Pitch, Pulse & Magic’ or a demonstration by Drake Music Scotland of the Inclusive Ensemble for pupils who have additional support needs. The day concluded with a panel discussion chaired by EMS Creative Executive Helen McVey with contributions from David Green, Chair of Scottish Government’s Instrumental Music Implementation Group, Dr Leo Moscardini, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Strathclyde and Dr. Stephen Broad. EDUCATION UPDATE

In 2013/14 EMS workshops reached more young people than ever before with 3800 participants in 98 workshops across Scotland.

41 workshops took place between January - April 2014 alone. This included the SCOTTISH WIND ENSEMBLE who delivered 4 fun and interactive workshops with P5-7 children at West Kilbride Primary School, working with young instrumentalists and including performances, games and a Q &A sessions. ADAM WALKER (principal flautist of the London Symphony Orchestra) gave a pre-concert masterclass working with 25 instrumentalists of all ages from Kelso whilst CULLEN SOUND performed a range of traditional and classical music to all students at Pennyland Primary School and a workshop on listening to music through art which culminated in students creating a piece of art based on what the trio had performed! The SCOTTISH REED TRIO gave an interactive concert to students at Perth High School and the MCKENZIE SAWERS DUO gave a demonstration and masterclass with 19 young woodwind players from Breadalbane Academy encouraging the school to provide a minibus to transport 8 students to their concert the following evening.

Student’s at St. Andrew’s High School were treated to a visit from Harp & Clarsach player ELINOR NICHOLSON and singer JULIET MONTGOMERY whilst the DORIC STRING QUARTET gave workshops and masterclasses at Menzieshill High School and St. Paul’s Academy devoted to listening and led discussions on music they performed.

ERATO PIANO TRIO worked in partnership with Biggar Music Club visiting students from Biggar Primary and Biggar High School.

AREA PRESENTATIONS 2014

This year, EMS visited Easterbrook Hall (Dumfries, 25th April), Perth Subud Centre (Perth, 26th April) and Aberdeen Arts Centre (Aberdeen, 10th May) for our Area Presentations. The day included presentations and updates on all operational activity at EMS and concluded with an open discussion session. Once again the events were well attended with 39 promoters representing 24 clubs. One EMS promoter present commented ‘It was an excellent meeting - I would say the best I’ve ever been at!

MUSIC EDUCATION MATTERS GALLERY

“Many thanks for facilitating our workshops in Biggar last week. We really enjoyed working with both schools and were particularly delighted that apparently for the first time ever students from Biggar High School took up their free ticket offer to attend one of the Music Club’s concerts. I guessed we couldn’t have hope for more!” - Eratio Piano Trio

Other worksops over the term included the LEONORE TRIO who visited Phoenix Hall, Newton Dee to deliver workshops to an audience of elderly people with learning difficulties from Simeon House, the FELL CLARINET QUARTET performing at Kirkcudbright Primary School, ONYX BRASS who worked with 200 children at Lanark Primary School and OPUS DUO who visited schools across South Ayrshire.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

HIGH HEELS & HORSE HAIR continue to enjoy their Residency having recently worked with London-based violist Peter Lale at Crear and performed at the Cottier Chamber Project. The violin & cello duo are looking forward to the remainder of their first EMS tour performing duos by Morley, Oswald, Bartok and Kodaly at the following clubs:

Lochaber: 28th November; Skye: 29th November; Aberdeen: 1st December

This autumn, High Heels & Horse Hair will present TRANSPLANTED, a project celebrating the rich diversity of Scotland’s plant life and its music inspired by James Oswald’s compendium ‘Airs for the Seasons’. With support from Creative Scotland, High Heels & Horse Hair have commissioned 8 of Scotland’s leading composers to write new miniatures exploring native plants and their many uses in society over the centuries.

The new works span a range of styles, from contemporary Classical to Traditional and Jazz music, with contributions from David Fennessy, Martin Kershaw, Stuart MacRae, Eddie McGuire, Chris Stout, Hanna Tuulikki, David Ward and Judith Weir.

Set against a stunning backdrop of plant portraits by award-winning nature photographer Laurie Campbell, the evocative performance is sure to delight and inspire music and plant lovers alike. ATHENAEUM WINDS are in their second year of the Residency Project and have enjoyed two visits to Crear in 2014 working with Mark O’ Keefe (Principal Trumpet, BBC SSO) and Will Conway (Hebrides Ensemble & Chamber Orchestra of Europe). The quintet are now preparing for their forthcoming EMS tour which we

are delighted to announce will include a new commission by Dr Oliver Searle. The new piece, ‘Pilgrim of Curiosity’ will explore amalgamations of culture through a number of musical memories and references inspired by Oliver’s visits to places of worship all over the world. Oliver and the quintet will collaborate with a lighting designer to create a promenade style performance with a number of visual effects which will be performed at a special

PROMOTER ANNIVERSARIES

Two clubs are celebrating significant anniversaries in 2014/15. To mark their 70th year, COWAL MUSIC CLUB have commissioned a piece by Edward McGuire for former EMS Residency Project ensemble Hoot. ‘Cowal Colours’ will receive its world premiere on 26th October, 3pm at Cowal Golf Club. 6 paintings will be displayed during the performance as well as a film of images of the paintings specially produced by Don McNeill DA and Jean Bell. A documentary film of the creative composition process is also being produced by Gordon Davidson.

RESIDENCY PROJECT ALUMNI NEWS

The MAXWELL QUARTET (2011-13) have been selected as Park Lane Group Artists 2015. They will make their debut at the Purcell Room, Southbank Centre in January 2015 with a programme celebrating the music of influential composer Robert Saxton.

The SUTHERLAND DUO (2010-12) have recently made their debut recording, funded by Creative Scotland and private sponsorship. The recording took place at Potton Hall, Suffolk and includes the EMS Commission by Gareth William ‘Worry Doll’. The Duo are planning to tour in early 2015 to promote the release.

BEITH ARTS GUILD will be celebrating on 28th September with a special concert at Beith Community Centre to recognise 50 years of music-making and artistic endeavour in the Garnock Valley in North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. Founded in 1964, Beith Arts concerts has become a popular cultural fixture within the local community and aims to introduce audiences to types of music they may have not encountered before. Roger McLean, president of Beith Arts, would like to thank everyone for their support over the last 50 years as the organisation looks forward to the next 50!

TRAD ARTS SMALL FUND

In 2013/14 EMS were given an allocation of £120,000 by Creative Scotland to distribute to support small projects involving Scottish Traditional Dance, Music or Storytelling. EMS received 150 applications requesting a total of £353,000 and were able to support 58 exciting projects which have taken place across the length and breadth of Scotland.

In 2014/15 EMS will have an allocation of £35,000 to distribute. There is only one application deadline - Friday 10th October 2014 at 5pm.

TOURS CONFERENCE 2014

The annual Tours Conference will take place on Saturday 22nd November 2014 at the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Glasgow. As well as providing the opportunity to discuss touring ensembles, the event will also include an update on EMS activity, tailored development sessions and provide invaluable opportunities to meet other promoters from across Scotland. Information on how to book will be sent to all promoters in due course and we highly recommend you come along and enjoy the day!

STAFF CHANGES

Lesley-Ann Smith joined the EMS team in October 2010 as an Intern and a year later took up the post of Education Officer, helping to develop the education of EMS and support the formation of relationships between clubs and schools throughout the promoter network. In June 2014 she took up a new position as Head of Instrumental Service at West Dunbartonshire Council. Any workshop enquiries should now be directed to John Slack [email protected]

It has been a lot of fun to be involved in a variety of projects including the education work, National Chamber Music Day, Train and Sustain and Music Education Matters, with some beautiful visits to Crear along the way!”

Craig McMurray began his internship in July 2013 and has worked on a number of key EMS projects including National Chamber Music Day, the Residency Project and Music Education Matters whilst providing general administrative support to the team. In August, Craig will start a postgraduate course in Education at Strathclyde University.

“I’ve been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to gain ‘hands-on’ experience in the wide remit of work EMS delivers - it has been a fascinating, challenging and enjoyable experience.”

TOURS BOOK 2015/16

The EMS Tours Book 2015/16 listing all chamber groups available for touring in Scotland will be available to view online from 31st July 2014. A hard copy of the book will be sent out to promoters in early August.

VICE CHAIR VACANCY

EMS is looking for a Vice Chair to join the Board in November 2014. The Vice Chair will join the organisation at an exciting time in its continuing development, as we embrace innovative practice and develop new projects to complement our existing core activity. EMS are looking for an individual who has board experience, strong strategic skills and who has worked within and/or has a keen interest in classical music and/or other arts forms.
