Welcome to EMPA’s 47th Annual General Meeting; Welcome to Malta. We are very happy to host the EMPA Board, as well as all participants and their guests. We hope these three days will be fruitful, and enjoyable to all. We look forward to have the opportunity to network together both during the Conference, as well as during the different and exciting excursions we have designed especially for you. Please be assured of our assistance at all times if and when you require it. This booklet is presenting you with all you need to know about the Conference

However, Malta boasts an incredible history dating thousands of years. Its megalithic Temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt or Stonhenge, and remain some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Malta has always been an island of strategic importance. It was occupied by a succession of empires, including the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Aragonese, the Knights of St. John, the French and the British. Today, Malta is

the Southernmost member of the European Union, and is a hub at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea for culture, commerce and diplomacy and tourism.
