PhD ThesisTitle Algorithms for Shape Analysis Based on Fourier Descriptors

Supervisor Associate Professor Samim KonjicijaDescription The main research topic of this doctoral dissertation was the Fourier descriptor

and its application in shape-based image retrieval problems. The thesis proposedseveral shape descriptors: a novel type of scale invariant Fourier descriptor, called NCC Fourier descriptor; a method of determining nominal orientationand starting point and a corresponding phase-preserving shape descriptor, socalled phase-including Fourier descriptor - PIFD, were proposed; three differentweighting functions are analyzed. All proposed descriptors outperformed otherstate-of-the-art shape descriptors in terms of performance to complexity ratio.

Master ThesisTitle Detection of Objects in Space Using Sound Field Modelling

Supervisors Associate Professor Samim Konjicija & Professor Melita Ahic-DjokicDescription The thesis investigated the possibility of synthesis of a sensory system based

on active sound sources and sound sensors that would be capable of qualitativedetection of objects in an artificially generated sound field. Unlike the commonsweeping methods, the research was inspired by human and animal interpretationof sound signals. A simulator, together with all analytical descriptions, wasdeveloped for conducting experiments and simulations. Some partial resultswere obtained in simulation, but the research in real-world environment is notyet conducted.

Title Synthesis of the Computer Vision System for Chess Playing Robot ManipulatorSupervisor Professor Melita Ahic-DjokicDescription The thesis proposed a solution for a computer vision system designed to be

implemented on a computer controlled robot manipulator (such as ABB IRB120), in order to allow the robot manipulator to play chess with a humanopponent. The system was based on a single CCD low quality camera, andMATLAB as main software program for image processing and communicationwith external hardware. All parameters needed for robot trajectory planning werecalculated, together with a simple chess engine communication interface neededfor chess game presentation, and robot manipulator chess moves generation.
