It is a government requirement that students are attending school every day and are on time. Although

most students at Homebush Boys High School have great attendance, there is a small cohort of students

who are not meeting school and government expectations. If your child is late or absent, please notify

the school with a note or doctor’s certificate explaining their absence on the first day of their return.

Notes are being sent home notifying parents and carers of students who are arriving at

school late on a regular basis or who are not meeting the minimum attendance expectations. If you need

to discuss attendance or lateness please contact the Head Teacher Administrations at Homebush Boys

Message from the Principal

Anna Paleothodoros - Relieving Principal

During the period of May 29-June 30, I was given the opportunity to step into the

privileged role of Relieving Principal at Homebush Boys High School, as our

Principal John Kennedy took his well-earned long service leave. The Principal’s

role is very important one and at first I was hesitant to undertake this position,

as I had just recently arrived at the school, but with the support of John Kennedy,

Kathy Powzun the Director of Public Schools – Strathfield Network, and the staff,

I accepted this leadership opportunity. It has been a very productive period with

many student and staff events, achievements and celebrations.

Biggest Morning Tea Event

On Monday, 29 May the SASS staff and the Social Science Faculty hosted a magnificent Homebush Boys High ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ which was a huge success. Staff were blown away with the sumptuous delights that were on offer and the magnificent high tea table decorations that made the occasion such a grand event. The lucky dip draw was very successful and a number of wonderful prizes were on offer. Staff were very generous and supported the Cancer Council to raise approximately $850 to a very important cause. A big thank you to both the SASS staff and the Social Science faculty for organising such a wonderful event.

Year 7 Class Changes

This year our school’s Resource Allocation Model (RAM) funding is significant and it has allowed us to

appoint four new members of staff that will make a significant contribution to the learning outcomes of

all students. Staff, parents and the community have provided us with positive feedback in regards to

creating an additional Year 7 class to support the learning needs of students and their transition into high

school. Additional support will be provided in Literacy and Numeracy, by using the expertise of our

Learning and Support Teacher (LaST) and Student Learning Support Officers (SLSOs). Students would also

have more opportunities to engage in extension activities due to the reduction of class sizes. The new

Year 7 class began on Monday, 5 June Week 7 and all Year 7 classes had been rearranged to maximise

student learning opportunities and to facilitate achievement for every student. There has been a settling

in period for some students, but overall the adjustments have been fruitful.



Iftar Night @ Homebush Boys High School

The Iftar Night at Homebush Boys High School was my first Iftar evening that I had attended and I felt

privileged in experiencing this special event. I was informed by a number staff and parents that this is a

special religious event that has a magnificent banquet and occurs every year at our school during the

Muslim holy month of Ramadan and signifies the breaking of the fast at sunset.

Our school has such a rich, diverse and vibrant multicultural environment that is inclusive, tolerant,

respectful and above all harmonious. This evening is often shared as a community, with people gathering

together to eat and pray but what made it special was as a Homebush Boys High School community we

came together, both Muslims and non-Muslims to embrace and respect the Muslim customs and

traditions which is very significant.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people for making this event successful, firstly

to Human Appeal International Australia for sponsoring this Iftar night, to all our special guests Jodi McKay

Member of Parliament for Strathfield, the P&C President, Youth motivational speakers, Community

representatives and clerics and our students and parents who attended this evening. A big thank you to

all our parents who assisted in the preparation of the meals, to the teachers and students who assisted

in the organisation of the event and especially our Hospitality teachers, students who worked tirelessly

to prepare our delicious meals. Lastly a big thank you to Mr Abbou who is a very humble and hardworking

member of staff that has led in the organisation of this magnificent event.



CAPA Recital Night Thursday 22 June

On Thursday evening the CAPA faculty held their annual CAPA Recital Night which featured the wonderful

talents of our Visual Arts and Music students. A wide range of artworks were showcased from several

year groups in a static display and we were all impressed by their creativity and artistic flair. The evening

also featured magnificent Music performances by our staff and students and included piano

performances, rock bands and a range of classic and modern music.

Congratulations to Ms Audrey Juska and the CAPA faculty and the Music and Visual Arts students for this

fantastic night which showcased the wonderful talents of our students.

Symphonia Jubilate Concert

On Saturday 24 June, Symphonia Jubilate presented “Musical Stories” a concert that

featured both primary and secondary students showcasing their musical talents at the

Marie Bashir Primary School hall. Our students were involved in the magnificent Primo

orchestra which was the highlight of the event. Congratulations to all the students involved

in this spectacular evening.



Staff Leadership Opportunities

A number of staff have been given the opportunity to take up leadership roles this term. Peter Wilson

(Head Teacher History) has replaced me in the Deputy Principal’s role and Louise Symonds has taken the

Relieving Head Teacher History role. Matina Shadwick (Relieving Deputy Principal) has also taken long

service leave from June 13 -21 July and Jonothan Sculthorpe (Head Teacher PDHPE) has stepped into this

position. Daniel Carrozza has replaced Mr Sculthorpe as the Relieving Head Teacher PDHPE. Kerry Meucci

Head Teacher Learning Support has also taken leave during this period and Muruvet Altundag is replacing

her as the Relieving Head Teacher Learning Support. Congratulations to all in gaining these leadership

positions.

Kathy Powzun (Director Public Schools NSW, Strathfield Network) for giving me the opportunity to take

From the Deputy’s Desk

We are nearing the end of Term 2 and it is a time to reflect on the wonderful

achievements of our students and staff. It has been a hugely busy term that has

included the completion of Year 7-10 Reports, Year 11-12 Parent Teacher Night,

Year 7-8 Parent Teacher Night and Year 10 to 11 Electives Night. Additionally,

there has been more sporting, public speaking, artistic, musical, cultural,

careers, leadership and charitable events that can be named in a single

publication. I must thank the dedicated staff at Homebush Boys High School –

without the good will of teachers such a rich collections of extra-curricular

opportunities would not be possible.

Bushy Boys Awards

Thanks to the efforts of Mr Elaro and his team, the Bushy Boys Behaviour initiative has continued to roll

out across the school. Teachers are actively looking to ‘catch boys doing the right thing’ and present Bushy

Boys Awards, that are entered into a weekly raffle at the school assembly. It has been really pleasing to

see more and more of these awards being given out and older students beginning to be represented in

the weekly draw. The Bushy Boys Behaviour initiative is our school’s interpretation of the Positive

Behaviour Interventions and Supports (or PBIS) program from the United States. For more information

School Attendance Policy

Work has occurred this term on updating the attendance policies for senior and junior students. In

particular there is an emphasis on the importance of being on site, at the school, from the beginning to

end of the school day, without exception. There has been a crackdown on students feeling that on sport

day they may leave the school grounds to purchase lunch. Any student who has sport at school must stay

on the school grounds for the entire school day, and this includes any sport students who have had off-

site sporting events cancelled due to wet weather.

Uniform

Cool weather brings with it the temptation for students to wear various clothing items to school that are

not uniform. In particular hooded jumpers began to be a problem in early winter. Please note that

‘hoodies’ must not be worn to school. The school policy is to remove the ‘hoodie’ for the day and provide

a woollen jumper if desired by the student. Please ensure that students are in full school uniform each

day. If there is a problems please write and sign a note explaining the important reason for being out of

uniform.

Deng Adut visit and Refugee Week

The school was very lucky to have Deng Adut visit and present to Years 9 and 11. Deng’s amazing life

journey took him from being a child soldier in Sudan at the age of 6 to becoming a Human Rights lawyer

and NSW Nominee for Australian of the Year, with three university degrees under his belt. The response

of the boys to Deng’s presentation was a pleasure to watch, as they listened in silence, completely

engaged by Deng's amazing life story and his insights for young people and the importance of feeding

their minds. I thank Bassam Maaliki for his ongoing commitment to raising awareness for refugees and

for organising Deng’s visit. Bassam also delivered a most articulate address at the Refugee Week assembly

on June 16, reflecting on the significance of Deng’s life story and our own need to reach out to offer

From the Deputy’s Desk

No matter the school, Term 2 is frantic. Assessments, marking, reports, Parent

Teacher evenings, reports, Subject Selection, reports… It always puts a strain on the

teachers and the school community.

In this frame, we must acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of our

teaching staff in meeting deadlines whilst still delivering quality teaching to our

students. This, along with juggling family and out of school commitments. When

students deliver on their expectations and strive to do their best, the effort is made

rewarding.

The culture of our school is much bigger than the individual students. The tradition of

representing the school and serving the community is something that the school holds

dear. Term 2 began with perhaps our highest level of exposure in the community with many of our

students- Prefects, SRC, Drum Corps and general student body participating in ANZAC Day

commemorations. We were represented in several ceremonies around Sydney; including the Dawn

Service at Burwood and the ANZAC Day march in the city. It is important that this tradition continues as a

mark of respect for the young men and women that fought for our country and in particular, the young

men that walked the halls of our school prior to leaving for service.

Our students have continued to represent the school honourably in sport. We have finished all carnivals

and have seen some brilliant results in Athletics and Cross Country. Our winter season is coming to a close

and we will have many teams playing in the finals for a variety of sports. This further adds to the tradition

and culture of our school.

We recently conducted the Premier’s Sporting Challenge Gala Day. This brought together Marie Bashir

and Homebush Primary Schools to be coached by our Year 10 PASS students. They put the young boys

and girls through sessions on AFL, OzTag, Football (Soccer), Ultimate Frisbee, Netball and Volleyball. A

huge thank you to Cos Cremona, the School canteen, Classic Kebabs and the Homebush Fruit Bowl for

their contribution to the catering on the day.

The artistic flare was on show during the recent CAPA night. We witnessed some great performances and

brilliant student artwork. The CAPA night is once again testament to the dedication of our staff, but more

importantly, the all-round talent of some of our students. The night has been a showcase for the school

and holds a special part of the school’s culture and traditions.

The subject selection process has begun for our year 10 students. Parents have been presented with the

information of the process and an outline of the courses and the students have undergone their ‘Market

Day’ exposing them to the course outlines for their Stage 6 studies. Towards the end of Term 3, students

will participate in an interview with a teacher to make their final decisions on subjects for Stage 6. Parents

are invited to be part of the decision making. Students are encouraged to make informed decisions. That

means, gathering as much information as possible about the subjects by talking to those with the most

understanding of the courses- teachers, students in the course and Head Teachers. The choices need to

be made in the interest of the student, but should be made in consultation with the parents.

Why so much talk about culture and tradition? For our school to maintain a culture of excellence, we need

to have certain elements in place. This includes respect for the school and respect for the history and

traditions of the school. It also requires connectedness; a sense of belonging to something bigger than

them. One factor that can help maintain this is the wearing of the correct uniform. Why a uniform? It



shows that the student has respect for the values and beliefs of the school. It shows that they are willing

to be part of a community with the same focus. A uniform says that they are a Bushy Boy. A uniform

shows commitment to the school and gives the students a chance to present themselves in a mature and

formal manner. It shows that they have respect for themselves and want to represent their family in the

best manner possible. It is a simple way to give back to the school. This is why the school has a uniform

and why teachers try so hard to ensure that students are correctly dressed.

As a staff, we would like to have stronger communication between school and home. This is not just one-

way communication, but meaningful dialogue that helps us understand your thoughts and opinions. The

Parents and Citizens Council (P & C) is a great start for having your thoughts heard.

PDHPE Report

Welcome to Joel Howard. Joel comes to HBHS from Doonside HS as our new HT Administration, but more

importantly, as a PDHPE teacher. Joel brings with him a wealth of experience as

a teacher and in private industry.

Our year 7 students have been knees deep investigating the effects of smoking

on their health and submitted an assessment task related to this topic. It was

great to see the effort that the students put in to the task. However, it must be

stressed that students are to use a device that has word processing on it. Year 7

have settled in well to PDHPE and were involved in a presentation that dealt with

Bullying. This live drama/comedy is presented by Brainstorm Productions and

engages the students thoroughly.

Year 8 have been exploring the issue of bullying. They have examined the

appropriate responses to bullying and the ways in which they can reduce its impact on them and their

peers. They submitted creative and empathic responses to a bullying victim’s letter.

Year 9 PDHPE students have explored Body Image; in particular male body image. The unit asks the

students to examine their own beliefs, then looks to develop coping skills such as resilience and

connectedness to prevent poor body image.

The Year 9 PASS students have been strengthening their coaching skills through practical units. They have

been coaching their peers throughout the term and have shown a high level of skill in this area.

The year 10 cohort have just completed a unit on Sexual Health and Respectful relationships. This is an

essential component of the PDHPE course as it deals with so many issues that students experience at this

age. They submitted a technology based task that asked them to develop an information resource for

their peers. The result was excellent.

Year 10 PASS have used their coaching skills to coach students from years 5 and 6 at Homebush Public

and Marie Bashir Public Schools. They showed strong leadership and management skills and certainly

represented the school well.

This semester, we surveyed the students regarding their interests and opinions on the practical units of

our course. The results came back with some surprises. Many of our students would like to improve their

fitness and would like this to be incorporated into all of our units.

We will be surveying the parents on their expectations of our programs soon.

2017 Cross Country

To run any distance over 500m quickly takes guts and a willingness to undergo some discomfort. Thursday

May 4th (Star Wars Day) saw our year 7 students and those from yrs 8- 12 brave enough to sign up, tackle

the 2017 School Cross Country course. The day was perfect for running- cloudy, not too hot and not too

cold.

The course was similar to 2016, where the boys started and finished at Airey Park. All age groups pounded

the pavement around the Airey Park and the Homebush West precinct; with the younger age groups

running over a shorter course than the big boys.

The 16s, 17s, 18s ran together and it was exciting to see such a talented field pushing each other to the

limit. A group of six runners moved out in front and commanded the race. A tight finish saw Cory Jr Sharma

Constance complete the race just ahead of Abdulrahman Kamara in 2nd.

In the junior age groups, Andy Kim and Vrishank Pendyala dominated their races with sizeable leads and

fast finishes. Two talented athletes putting their skills on show.

The year 7 students were introduced to the sporting culture of HBHS through a compulsory running of

the course. Some were more impressed than others.

Howe house won the day by just a few points ahead of Vaughan, Hayes then Greening.

The Zone cross country was held on Friday in near-perfect conditions at the Macquarie University Playing

Fields. Homebush had some strong performers run the challenging course. The Zone level is really a big

step up from the school event and the competition is filled with boys that count cross-country as their

main sport. To be competitive amongst the 7 schools that participate, you must be particularly talented.

Cory Jr Sharma Constance, Jake Harley and Nick Knezevic finished 2nd, 8th and 9th respectively in the 18s

race. Josh Anderson and Scotty Miller achieved 13th and 23rd in the 17s. The 16s race saw Jerong Ung

come in 26th. Some other great results were Vrish Pendyala in 14th and Andy Kim finishing 6th.

Therefore, on Friday 9th June 2017, Cory Jr Sharma Constance, Jake Harley and Nick Knezevic and Andy

Kim will represent the Metropolitan North West Boys Zone at the Sydney North Region Cross Country

Championships at Gosford. Good luck boys.

Well done to all the students that stepped outside of their comfort zone and took on the cross country.

Thank you to the Yr 11 Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation students who so ably assisted at the school cross

country carnival. The day would not have been a success without your help.



Bassam Malik Refugee Speech

Picture this; you are a five year old Sudanese child. The rebels have raided your village, and have killed all your family except your uncle and one of your sisters. You hide for years around Africa. Your sister marries an older man. She does not love him, but she needs safety and security. She sells everything she owns for you, until you finally have enough money for a boat trip to Australia. You go through China. Thailand. Malaysia. Finally, you arrive at a dock. You board an unstable boat to safety. Australia. When you arrive you are imprisoned in a jail on Christmas Island.

Boat people, refugees, illegal immigrants, queue jumpers....We hear these words in the media every day, yet do we really know what they mean? 1788 saw the first boat arrive on the Australian borders and from there we share the migrant story. Today the Aboriginal people share their country with us.

But today, the government have closed the borders to refugees.... Human beings, mothers and daughters and fathers and sons – they are farmers, teachers, doctors, engineers, they are human beings.

The lucky ones are those that escape.

They risk everything to get on small, unstable boats, they are desperate to be safe from the risk of starvation, being bombed and tortured.

Sadly Over 90% of refugees then end up in Detention centres as punishment from government authorities and denied the basic human rights of education, healthcare and dignity. They are not allowed to contribute to society and are treated like prisoners.

Our silence is damaging!

One person who speaks and advocates for refugees, who inspires to change people perceptions about refugees and shown us first-hand how they can rise above is Deng Adut.

Deng Thiak Adut visited our school last week and inspired us with his journey of survival. Mr Adut was forced to fight as a child soldier at the age of six in Sudan, He was groomed to handle an AK47 instead of a pencil. He escaped bullet wounds, torture and near starvation, before he was smuggled out and made it to Australia as a refugee, to become a lawyer, refugee advocate and NSW Australian of year.

His story is nothing short of heroic and I am was inspired by some of his take-home messages. "Hate is a disease and love is the medicine"

Today I would like to advocate for Refugees... And send a strong message to the government to open The Borders...

Today I will wear this Ubelong badge, the message is simple, a key to belong, a simple message of embracing diversity and in solidarity of all my brothers and sisters that stand here today.

I have funded my own project #Ubelong and hope that you can make a small contribution in purchasing one of these badges, a badge that can be worn in solidarity of all asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. A badge that we all have the power to at least be welcoming and spread kindness for the goodness of humanity.

All funds at the moment go to organisations that are also committed to helping Refugees settle into Australia. Together lets spread Peace and Enjoy Diversity.

Please join me in my pledge...

I will be a voice to the voiceless. I will be a hope for tomorrow. I will embrace diversity.

I will foster a sense of belonging for all refugees.

I will stand shoulder to shoulder as the weight of change is better carried together.

My message.... Where I am, U Belong.

2. Technology at School

2.1 BYOD BYOD (Bring your own Device) is a compulsory policy at Homebush Boys High School to assist the

teaching and learning of our students. All students are required to bring their devices charged and ready

for use every day. Students are required to display courtesy, consideration and respect for others when

using laptops or tablets.

Purpose We aim to:

● Prepare students for a paperless workplace

● Provide a cost effective solution which is environmentally friendly

● Increase Efficiency

2.2 Mobile Phones & Non-Educational Electronic Devices Mobiles phones and other non-educational electronic devices are restricted in all classrooms, library

environment, school buildings, school assemblies, unless explicitly directed by your teacher during their

class for educational purposes only.

Purpose Mobiles are detrimental for the following reasons:

● Disrupting the learning environment

● Invasion of privacy through misuse of pictures/videos/voice recording

● Issues revolving around cyber bullying (harass, threaten, abuse, vilify or embarrass other

students or staff)

● Prolonged use proven to have negative impact on physical and mental health

Emergency Contact If a parent or caregiver needs to contact a student at school because of an emergency, they are required

to call the school’s main office and a message will be sent immediately to the student. If a student

needs to make an emergency contact with anyone, they can do so through the school’s main office.

3. Consequences of Breach There will be zero tolerance for breaches of the technology policy. Below are the actions that will be
