COUNCIL NEWS 31/1/2011

The Australia Day ceremony in Grenfell went off well although the crowd seemed to be down a little on

previous years. There are a number of community groups that contribute to the occasion apart from Council,

and these include the CWA, the Cadets, the Town Band, the Historical Society, Lions and Rotary. Peter

Mitton also plays an important role.

Taylor Park looked a treat and the early weather was kind. The light shower which passed just after the start

was the price we paid for the light cloud cover which kept the temperature down until we finished.

The Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Anthony Pun, was an interesting fellow. He made it very clear during his

address that he preferred rural Australia to the city where he lives, and he took great pride in calling himself a

larrikin. He actually thrived on the sort of banter that you sometimes hear between good friends who know

they can say anything to each other without causing offence.

The thing that I found particularly remarkable was how this person with his obvious Chinese background, was

telling the crowd the many reasons why we should feel good to be Australians. This is something which most

of us probably take for granted but it clearly meant a lot to him.

The Ambassador wasn‟t able to attend the other celebrations in the shire, but there were also ceremonies in

Caragabal, Greenethorpe and Quandialla which were well attended by their local communities. Council also

supported each of these ceremonies with certificates and a BBQ.

Council has been contacted by Ovarian Cancer Australia, a not-for-profit organisation providing support and

advocacy for people affected by ovarian cancer. February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and key date

is the 23rd

, which is Teal Ribbon Day.

There is no early detection test for this disease, only observations of a number of symptoms. One in 77

Australian women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime so there would be a number of sufferers

already in the shire.

If you would like to donate or learn more, visit their website at www.ovariancancer.net.au or call 1300 660

334.

The former Fisheries Department is struggling for its identity – it has a website under the Department of

Primary Industries and a letterhead under something called NSW Industry and Investment. As an aside, it

never fails to amaze me how politicians continually believe that giving an old department a new name makes a

wonderful difference. The usual result is a loss of staff, a loss of corporate knowledge and another basket case

for some years until things settle down again.

Be that as it may, the Fisheries unit has funding available for projects which have direct benefits to

recreational fishing. Any organisation can apply, so members of the local fishing club may be interested.

Details can be found at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries or call 6648 3917. Applications close on 16 February

2011.

The Commissioner of the Rural Fire Service has backed down, although not completely, from his decision

before Christmas to drastically increase the contributions from local government. Many councils, ourselves

included, strongly objected to the increase which would have seen Weddin‟s annual contribution increase

from an agreed $85,784 (net) to $130,112 ie: by 51%.

The amended figure is now “only” $104,918, an increase of a “mere” 22% on the figure originally agreed to

by Council.

There is no question of the value of the Rural Fire Service to the Weddin Shire, and Council will have to

decide at its next meeting whether to accept the new contribution.

However what all councils object to is a government system which can increase its own charges to councils by

any amount, then say that councils are rate-pegged to 2.8%. No matter how you look at it, it‟s a nonsense.

It‟s also good money which should be spent within the shire, but is now going to support someone‟s grand

empire in Sydney. Thank goodness for the volunteers.
