Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)
Training Requirements
Elizabeth City State University requires all faculty, staff, or
students to complete their CITI research education before research
protocols can be approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
The CITI Training program has been recognized to meet federal
requirements for investigators conducting educational research in
the protection of human research subjects. Learners receive
completion certificates when institutional requirements are
met.
Training and research education can be accessed by:
STEP 1: Go to www.citiprogram.org .
STEP 2: Returning User? Please log in on the right. Don't have
an account? Click here to register in the inquiry line.

Click on the “Participating Institutions” field, then scroll
down and click on “Elizabeth City State University.” Choose only
one institution. If you are affiliated with more than one
institution, you will be able to select additional institutions
after providing the information required.

Research Investigators and Key Personnel)
You may also include Conflict of Interest and Social Behavioral
Responsible Conduct of Research if required at this time. Then
click “Complete Registration.”
The next screen will allow you to elect an affiliation with
another school or finalize your registration.

The Registration Completion Message will appear and prompt you
to check your email for confirmation.
You will receive an email to validate your email address.

Your registration will be confirmed by clicking on the Citi
Program link. Re-enter the site to login to your account from the
validation page.
Once you log back in you are ready to begin. Click on the course
title to enter the modules.

Please note that Social Behavioral Research Investigators and
Key Personnel and Responsible Conduct of Research are both required
for Human Subjects Protection Certification.
The module list for Basic Social Behavioral Investigators and
Key Personnel will appear. Complete The Integrity Assurance
Statement which activates the required modules; then begin modules
by clicking on the title. There are 16 required modules for this
section. Options modules may be completed, but are not
required.
Most modules have a required quiz located at the bottom of the
page. Click on “Take the Quiz”. Click “Submit” to generate a grade
for that module. This section also allows return to the grade book
and main menu.
A combined score of 80 is required to pass each course. If a
desired score is not achieved on a quiz, you may repeat the quiz in
which you did not score 100% correct.
Once all required courses are completed, instruction will be
given on how to print the “Course Completion Report”. Print or
download this report as evidence of meeting Elizabeth City State
University’s requirements. You may return to the course site in the
future to obtain a copy of the completion report. A copy of this
report must be included with all IRB Applications.
