The theater season is starting up and I’m finding more and more things to list in our theater column!

----------Since it’s a “new” year and we

have “new” things, look on the page with the business directory, that’s right, just above the directory and you have the start of a new feature, a weekly cartoon called California Dreaming. Terje Nordberg is the cartoonist and we’re looking forward to his weekly chuckle.

Speaking of things we look forward to (oops a preposition at the end of a phrase isn’t good English), have you noticed what a faithful “crew” we have—from Brent Evans (Success Boosters) to Bob Sneed (he was a columnist long before I was around) and now with Jake and his crossword puzzles, we really have a lot to appreciate. (Jake is traveling a lot and doesn’t always have an opportunity to compose a new puzzle).

Janie Kelly is very faithful about sending the real estate information, as is Dan Soszynski to make sure we let you know about adoptable animals at the shelter. Chef Tomm makes sure we always have a new recipe and Karl Leal takes care of our financial interests. We are so lucky to have the interest of so many “experts”.

----------I grew up in “depression”

times when there wasn’t any “central heat” in the small houses we always rented. Recently our thermostat here at the office pulled a wingding and we were without our regular system. Fortunately we still had our “old” system and we were able to fire it up. The result wasn’t all good because the old system hadn’t been used for a while and the amount of dust it blew into the air caused several of us (me, in particular) to have blood shot eyes, with a lot of itching and irritation. Just shows how much things have changes

and how much we just take for granted—being warm on a cold day and being cooled off on a hot one!

---------On page one, Pat Safford tells

us that Cosentino’s is closing. Next week, she hopes to give us some history on the family.

---------Last week, Campbell friends

said “good-bye to retiring council members Jane Kennedy and Dan Furtado—except as everyone present at the reception at Villa Ragusa agreed—they definitely are NOT out of public service. Both of them will continue to support local projects—Jane, I am sure, is going to continue as chair of the Friends of the Library and Dan (while he’s not running a race—like the Valentine run) is a strong support on the Veterans Memorial Foundation. This was an event that brought “back” a lot of former city employees, including Kevin Duggan, our former city manager who nows holds forth in Mountain View as their city manager.

In addition, someone (I suspect it might have been Kelly Bybee, former cop or Al Bito from the city manager’s office) put on a fun slide show.

It’s always expected, for any departure or celebration from anyone connected with the city, that Bob Kass would say a few words—and he didn’t disappoint us.

The real winner in entertainment was a “book” written by Natasha Bissell. This is one clever gal---she took Dr. Seuss to a new level! As I recall, she did something when Linda Klemczak left the city and I didn’t report on it…so here’s a report—it was great!

It’s hard to explain these events but I thought if I mentioned them here, those folks would know I was there and enjoyed the event!

Art Burton of San Jose was born on October 23, 1924 in Los Angeles, California. He passed away January 16, 2011 peace-fully in his sleep at his home. He was married to Jean Williams Burton for 59 years. They were married on July 22, 1945 in San Gabriel, California. H e was a General Building Contrac-tor since 1945 and has worked in his Campbell office at 879 Mc-Glincy Lane for more than fifty years. He was able to work up until June 26, 2010.

He is survived by his children Rich, Ken and Janet, grandchil-dren Douglas, James and Christy, great- grandchildren Macy and Tyson and big sister Ruth Marie Thomas. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Jean.

This is the third column on Charles P. Steinmetz, famous in his day as a master electrical en-gineering problem solver, math-ematical genius, inventor, author, dedicated socialist, dwarf, hunch-back, bachelor, lover of children and animals, poker player, educa-tor and completely independent cigar smoking character whom Tho-mas Edison hired when he was founding the General Elec-tric company. We have already noted Steinmetz’s engineering ac-complishments, now the hu-man being:

In Schenectady, New York, Steinmetz built a campsite on the Mohawk River. In the sum-mer-time he had guests to the camp on weekends especially enjoy-ing the company of child-ren. He loved to cook, but re-fused to do the dishes, which he left for his guests. Steinmetz also loved animals and his house was like a zoo with pet crows, squirrels, raccoons, cranes, dogs and a pet monkey named “Jenny” living there. Neighbors brought injured ani-mals to him to be cared for.

When his campsite was hit by lightning, he was stimulated to create a large high voltage labo-ratory with a machine producing lightning-equivalent volt-ages. He used that machine to develop lightning arresters (still used by electric power companies today), and to create a the-ory of electri-cal transient currents. When one of his expe-riments caused all the lights to out, he explained to his superiors, “I did it”. When he died in 1923 the camp was purchased by Henry Ford who moved it to his Dearborn History Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Steinmetz would often have friends over for poker on Friday evenings. During the summer he would work in a canoe, sail-ing up and down the Mohawk river. Boards across the gunwales served him as a desk, and he would kneel on a cushion in the canoe while doing mathematical calculations.

In 1903 Andrew Raymond, the president of Union College in Schenectady, asked Stein-metz if he would assist the college. From 1903 to 1913 Steinmetz headed the School of Electrical Engineer-ing and guided it to becoming one

of the best in the nation. He re-signed as head of the department in 1913 but continued teaching at the school until he died in 1923. Over this twenty year period he attended all faculty meetings but would not accept any money from the school. When Phi Gam-ma Delta needed a new fraternity house he helped raise the money, and he attended the fraternity par-ties and spoke each year at the in-duction ceremony for new mem-bers.

After he retired from Gener-al Electric he was occasionally asked to solve particularly knot-ty problems that teams of ex-perts could not. One was to find the de-fective component in complex ar-ray of components.

He worked on it for a few hours, then marked the malfunc-tioning part with chalk, and sub-mitted a bill to GE for ten thou-sand dollars. Asked to itemize his expenses, he replied, “One dollar for chalk, $9,999 for knowing where to put it”.

When James Lunn, a Social-ist, was elected mayor of Sche-nectady, Steinmetz served as president of the Common (city) Council and also served six years on the Schenectady Board of Education, four as its presi-dent. Steinmetz succeeded in building more schools in order to eliminate some children hav-ing to go for only a half-day. He got extra school rooms set aside for disabled students and those with difficulty in English, and at Christmastime every Schenec-tady disabled child received a toy from Charles Steinmetz. He kept Henry Ford waiting while he told a story to his adopted children. He was always quiet, polite and self effacing. But he completely lost his temper just once in his life and shouted at them when two ladies com-plained about noisy children in a new school near their homes.

He never married, fearful that deformed children like himself would be born. But he adopted a whole family and brought them into his home. Rarely was he seen without one of his favorite Black-stone pane-tella cigars. When he died in 1923, President Herbert Hoover said of him, “He always wanted to help everybody.”

Jake’s Crossword Puzzle

Bobbie Janes, a 50-year resident of Campbell, passed away on January 15, surrounded by her family. Bobbie was born June 11, 1925 in South Pasadena, CA, and moved to Kingman, AZ when she was two. Her father homesteaded there, and she worked with her family raising goats. She skipped a grade, and finished high school at age 16 by correspondence. She cooked for 36 miners at a mine near Wikieup, AZ.

At age 17 she met Bob Janes, and married him six weeks later, a marriage that would last 57 years, until his passing in 2000. They made their first home in Bonny Doon, in the Santa Cruz mountains, and moved to Campbell in 1950.

They bought and acre of land with a shack on Regina Way for $300, joking that they had to buy it because they were lost in the orchards and couldn’t find their way home. They built their home using scavenged materials, and raised three children in that home. They wisely selected the parcel of land that had the local well on it, and they used the water to garden extensively, growing all the fruits and vegetables they ate, as well as stocking neighborhood homes and restaurants.

Bobbie was well-known for her canning, with a pantry full of delicious jams, fruit, and pickles. She also froze hundreds of ears of corn every year, so the Janes family always ate well. As did everyone at the time, Bobbie and her children “cut cots and picked prunes” every summer.

Bobbie was an exceptionally talented woman, and an active volunteer in the community, serving as San Tomas School PTA president, where she sang in the annual Follies, known for her rendition of “I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No”, and her high kicking cancan.

She served as Cub Scout den mother, room mother, and band booster at both Campbell and Westmont high schools. She

Bobbie Janes Arthur Read Burton

volunteered her sewing talents for the Goodwill Doll Project, creating custom dressed dolls, winning first prize several times. She was also appreciated as an expert costume maker for school plays and majorette groups. Many brides were thrilled by elaborate wedding cakes, as well as stunning wedding gowns Bobbie made for family and friends.

Bobbie was active in the Campbell Congregational Church, singing in the choir for many years.

When the last child went off to college, Bobbie decided it was time to pursue her own education, and she graduated with an AA in accounting from West Valley College on her fiftieth birthday. She went on to work for a local CPA, then worked as a taxpayer service representative for the IRS for 11 years.

Upon retirement, she volunteered at the Campbell Community Center doing tax preparation for seniors. As a lifelong learner, she continued to embrace new technology, becoming adept at computer applications, and enjoying the social networks. She had many friends on Facebook and classmates.com!

Bob and Bobbie loved to travel. Their travels included a trip around the world, a 59-day cruise around South America, and excursions to Australia and New Zealand, making many lifelong friends along the way.

Bobbie is survived by her children, Sharon (Fred) Lueck of Vancouver, WA, Craig (Pam) Janes of Arroyo Grande, CA, and Rhonda (Bill) Bump of Campbell. She had eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, with one more on the way. The passing of the beloved matriarch leaves the family with a tremendous grief, but Bobbie’s legacy of love will live on.

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon, on Saturday, January 22, at the First Congregational Church of San Jose (Hamilton @ Leigh).

Terje Nordberg, born in Norway, is now living the good life in Northern California; and he has started capturing what makes

California California in a comic strip called "California Dreaming."

Terje Nordberg began his career as a comic book artist, but soon

switched from drawing to writing. His popular children's books have been published in a number of countries. He has also created several

"California Dreaming" will

gently poke fun at California and Californians, expose our sheer nuttiness, and allow us to laugh at ourselves in a weekly comic strip.

Hi! My name is Melvin, an ap-proximately three month old Border terrier mix pup. I'm a bouncy baby boy who can't get enough of play time and pamper-ing. I'm always happy and eager for attention and will do well in a home that can keep up with me as I go through puppyhood. I’m excited to attend training classes and learn some basic commands with my forever family!

Helloooooooo world, I'm Cyrus, an approximately one and a half year old orange tab-by. I'm a big guy with a huge heart who can be quite the play-ful feline, but also enjoy atten-tion from human companions. I hope to find my forever home soon so if you're looking for unconditional love, look no fur-ther!

South Bay Musical Theatre opens A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum on Saturday, January 29 at Saratoga Civic The-atre. One of the most irreverent and funniest musicals ever written, A Funny Thing-- takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plau-tus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. Add a score by Stephen Sondheim to the zany mix of mistaken identities, lovely cour-tesans and scheming servants, and you have the recipe for a sure-fire audience pleaser that will have you howling in your seat!

The new contract between the managers of Campbell’s Sunday Farmer’s Market, Urban Village Farmers Market, is for continued operation for the next two years, with a monthly fee of $1,000. The fee is in lieu of individual business licenses for the 75 to 110 vendors selling products downtown every Sunday.

Part of the agreement calls for limiting arts and crafts vendors to “no more than 25 percent” of the market and that the City has the discretion to remove an arts and crafts vendor that sells competing merchandise with downtown merchants.

Students are film contest finalists

Three Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) students have been named finalists for their public service announcement (PSA) vid-eo entry into the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Flu Fighting Festival Contest.

California residents from across the state can vote for their entry, “PSA Final by Ribbonscars,” until January 31.

The short PSA was filmed and produced by students in CCOC’s Video Production program: seniors Catrina Alderete from Piedmont Hills and Daniel Morales, from Leland High School; and junior, Mi-chah Orozco, from Branham High School. To vote for CCOC’s stu-dents, visit http://cdphfilmfest.org and click on the fifth video (Rib-bonscars) listed under the Video PSA: English category.

The contest was open to high school students across the state be-tween the ages of 14 and 17. Entries had to be submitted by Novem-ber 30, 2010 in one of the following categories: Video PSA: English; Video PSA: Spanish; Poster Design: English; or Poster Design PSA: Spanish.

The goal of the contest was to get students to develop a message for the public that was informative and would motivate the public to take steps to prevent the spread of the flu. Entries had to contain one of the following messages: to get vaccinated; stay home if you’re sick; cover your cough or sneeze; or wash your hands often. Finalists were selected based on their entry’s message theme, creativity, and enter-tainment value.

A total of four statewide winners will be selected based on the pub-lic’s votes, one from each category. The winner from each category will receive a $250 gift card provided by the California Immuniza-tion Coalition, and a certificate. Winners will be announced during the week of February 13 to 19 which is Preteen Vaccine Week.

City Lights offers play about actor

City Lights Theatre Company opens this week with Compleat Female Stage Beauty, a play based on the life of 17th century London’s most famous female impersonator, the actor Edward “Ned’ Kynaston.

Born in 1640, Kynaston was already an established presence on the London stage by 1660 in an era when it was forbidden for women to appear in any sort of theatrical production. It was common for teenage and young boys to earn renown for playing women’s roles.

Performances at Thursday though Saturday at 8 p.m., one Sunday evening (January 30) at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.The show plays through February 20.

City Lights Theater Company is located at 529 South Second Street in San Jose.

Feld Entertainment’s new ice production, Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! is gliding into San Jose at the HP Pavilion February 23-27 featuring a magical montage of Disney characters celebrating holidays and festivals from around the world.

Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! will be the first time audiences see live on-ice Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen from Walt Disney Pictures’ The Princess and the Frog.

Classic and contemporary Disney songs, an original storyline, brilliant costumes and high energy action will have audiences celebrating some of the world’s most popular events right in their hometown — from a Valentine’s Day Royal Ball, featuring the Disney Princesses to a Mardi Gras celebration with Princess Tiana to Halloween with Jack Skellington and the Disney Villains. In a fun-packed ice extravaganza, more than 50 characters from 16 Disney stories will converge and take audiences on a thrilling world tour to exotic destinations like Brazil for a Carnivale parade, Hawaii for a luau party and Japan for a Cherry Blossom festival.

“Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate! gives families a reason to celebrate no matter what time of year it is,” says Producer Kenneth Feld. “This uplifting and unforgettable spectacle showcases different celebrations around the globe, and families will walk away remembering to celebrate the everyday joys and successes in their lives.”

“Audiences are going to love this colossal celebration,” says Producer Nicole Feld. “We take the most exciting holidays and special events and pack them into one monumental show. You can travel the world in style and experience all the fun and excitement with your favorite Disney characters, including the newest Disney Princess, Tiana.”

In 2000 Campbell paid $32,000 for retirement benefits. In 2011 that cost is expected to be a staggering $2.6 million, according to Jill Lopez, human resources manager for the city. “Unfortunately, rates are expected to increase again in fiscal year 2012 and 2013,” she added.

The Campbell City Council recently held a first reading on a new ordinance that will allow a lower-cost pension system for all new miscellaneous employees.

There are two types of employees in the city, safety (police and fire) and miscellaneous (everybody else).

Campbell has about 110 employees in the latter category.

The city is the first agency in Santa Clara County to agree to the lower-cost system. Initially, the savings from the new plan will be minimal but savings will increase over time to about a 16 percent reduction in retirement costs, based on the scheduled July 1, 2011 rate.

A ‘first’ for Campbell

Retirement costsare through the roof

By Pat SaffordCampbell, like most

governments, contracts with CalPERS for a defined benefit pension plan for employees. With the strong economy and the stock market boom of the late 1990s most agencies, including Campbell, authorized enhanced benefits to stay competitive.

Many CalPERS plans made no employer contributions because of investment surpluses built up over time. Campbell’s was a modest $32,000 in 2000.

But that all changed over the past decade with increased benefit costs along with dramatic investment losses by CalPERS. Today, many government agencies are facing a financial crisis as retirement costs increase while revenues decrease.

Last year Campbell’s safety employees agreed to a new lower tiered benefit plan. When adopted, the latest employee contract will mean all new employees will be on the lower benefit plan.

A recent survey shows a sizable number of Americans want to breathe fresh air when they are outdoors—not secondhand smoke. According to the National Social Climate Survey of Tobacco Control, more than two-thirds of Americans feel that smoking should not be allowed within 20 feet of a doorway—a finding that is increasingly relevant as more indoor spaces have gone smoke-free. The survey also found that 43 percent of Americans feel that beaches should be smoke-free, and 36.5 percent are in favor of smoking bans in parks. “This annual survey is a consistent reality check on how America perceives tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke,”

Second hand smoke surveysaid Cheryl G. Healton, president and CEO of Legacy, a national public health organization. “This year’s survey focus on outdoor spaces reminds us that passive smoking is a public health threat, whether in a bar, restaurant, office or even at the beach or in a park.” According to the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, 100 municipalities and the state of Maine prohibit smoking on public beaches and 470 have enacted smoking bans in city parks. According to Legacy, secondhand smoke (SHS) is a mixture of smoke given off by the burning end of cigarettes, pipes or cigars, and smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers, which can involuntarily be inhaled by nonsmokers. The U.S. Surgeon General has

concluded that SHS is a major health risk to nonsmokers and in 1992 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classified SHS as a Group A carcinogen, meaning it is known to cause cancer in humans. There is no safe level of exposure. SHS contains over 4,000 chemical compounds including formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic, carbon monoxide, methane and benzene. Among the chemicals identified in cigarette smoke, 11 are known human carcinogens. Exposure can be particularly damaging for infants and children, whose respiratory rates are higher than those of adults.

Simply Financial Planning with Karl Leal

On a recent trip down the elevator I met a new person in my building. During our intro-ductions I asked what she did. “I’m a financial advisor,” was her reply. I said, “I’m a financial ad-visor too, I’m fee-only.” I could tell from the expression that she hadn’t heard the term fee-only be-fore. I asked her if she sold insur-ance. She did. I told her I didn’t sell insurance. She told she didn’t charge for financial planning. The elevator ride was over.

There is a number of ways fi-nancial advisors produce in-come. They get fees, commis-sions, and

Nothing is Freea combination of the two. The fees could be hourly fees, prob-ably in the $100 to $300 dollar per hour range. The fee could be a retainer fee of $3000 a year which would cover all services. Some mutual funds include fees and sales charges that produce in-come for the advisor.

The fees could be based on a percentage of the investment as-sets under management, typically in the 1% to 2% range. You’ll of-ten see financial firms using this model with account minimums. These minimums would likely be in the $100,000 to $1,000,000

range.Many advisors sell insurance.

These sales would pro-duce com-missions for the advisor. My new friend offers the complimentary financial plan knowing that she will likely have the opportunity to sell the client insurance. I know from experience most clients are un-insured. Rest assured if you are working with a financial advi-sor you are going to be paying for the services you receive.

Karl Leal can be reached at 408-879-2328 or [email protected].

“We’re very proud of Sally’s new board role as West Geographic Area Director,” stated Hospice of the Valley Board Chair Chris Worrall. “I echo Don’s sentiments as Sally does bring a wealth of leadership and experience to the table and I’m sure she’ll bring a fresh perspective and will make a positive contribution to the stewardship of NHPCO’s mission, values, and vision.”

As part of its continued commitment to developing New Works, TheatreWorks, the nationally-acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, is hosting its eighth annual Writers Retreat this week.

One of the nation’s leaders in cultivating and producing new musicals, TheatreWorks provides the opportunity for collaborating teams of acclaimed, up-and-coming, and established composers and playwrights to develop New Works, uninterrupted by the hassles and distractions of their daily lives. The company supplies performers, so that composers can try out new arrangements, and a musical director to help guide the creative process. An invitation-only presentation will feature selections from each work on Monday, January 24 in Mountain View.

This year’s retreat participants range from stage veterans and rock musicians to emerging playwrights and first-time collaborators, and include:

A new musical by Kara Lee Corthron and Justin Levine:

Commissioned by Naked Angels Theatre Company, award-winning playwright Kara Lee Corthron and writer/composer Justin Levine are joining forces to develop a new musical. Kara Lee Corthron's plays include Julius By Design, Etched in Skin on a Sunlit Night, Holly Down In Heaven (for which she received a Princess Grace Award), and Wild Black-Eyed Susans (for which she received a Helen Merrill Award). Kara recently received the Vineyard Theatre’s 3rd Annual Paula Vogel Playwriting Award. She is currently developing commissions for South Coast Repertory Theatre, New Georges, and Naked Angels Theatre Company. Justin Levine works as a writer, composer, and performer. His musical Bonfire Night (Book, Music, and Lyrics) was developed at New York Stage and Film this past summer with director Alex Timbers. He also served as the music director and cast member of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson since 2009.

Weathermen by David Clement and Kate Moira Ryan

Singer David Clement and playwright Kate Moira Ryan are teaming up to develop

Theatreworks hostsannual writers retreat

Weathermen, a rock musical focusing on 6 months (1969-70) in the increasingly tumultuous history of the radical anti-Vietnam organization, The Weather Underground, as they escalated from college campus protests to a declaration of war on the United States. Clement’s self-produced first album was featured as an Editor's Pick in Billboard and got him signed to Mercury Records (which became Universal Music). His songs have been played on TV shows including Dawson’s Creek, Popular, and The Gilmore Girls. He recently collaborated with Rob Bailey to create original music for Purple State of Mind, an independent documentary about the current divide in partisan politics. Kate Moira Ryan’s recent projects include Bass for Picasso, which debuted Off-Broadway in early 2010 and It’s Jewdy’s Show written with and for Judy Gold at the Williamstown Theater Festival. Additionally, she has another project in development expected to premiere at the Daryl Roth Theater in New York in the spring. She is currently the co-host of Hatched by Two Chicks on Sirius Radio with her long-time collaborator Judy Gold. The Weathermen was workshopped at La Jolla Playhouse in December of 2009.

Scheherazade: Jason Grote and Marisa Michelson

A new musical by JasonGrote (book) and Marisa Michelson (music and lyrics), Scheherazade hyperlinks the ancient tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights with the culture clashes of the 21st century to explore the ways in which narratives shape our lives. This musical was developed in Montclair State University's New Works Initiative and New Dramatists' PlayTime. Jason Grote is an award-winning playwright best known for his play 1001, which has received 14 productions between 2007 and 2010, at theaters including Denver Center Theatre Company and Boston Court Theatre, among others. Other plays include Maria/Stuart, Civilization (All You Can Eat), Hamilton Township, and This Storm is What We Call Progress. Honors include the P73 Fellowship and a Denver Post Ovation Award, and an O'Neill Playwrights' Conference Residency in 2008. Marisa

Michelson's work includes book and music for Tamar and the River (commissioned by the Signature Theatre thanks to the Shen Family Foundation Next Generation grant), Still Life with Toe Shoes, Hotel Sarajevo at CAP 21 and hotInk Festival, and other one-acts for Prospect Theatre Company in New York City. She is the winner of the St. Botolph Award for composition, a grant from the Global Arts Village to study Indian Hindustani Singing in India, a participant in the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio, and is an upcoming resident at Emerge, an interdisciplinary artists residency at Earthdance in Western Massachusetts.

The Light Princess: Music and lyrics by Mike Pettry Book by Lila Rose Kaplan

The Light Princess is the whimsical tale of a princess cursed at birth to lack gravity, both physical and emotional. The King and Queen must find the Princess' gravity before her 16th birthday, else the kingdom will fall into the hands of the Witch who cursed her. Based on the short story by George MacDonald, The Light Princess is a musical for younger audiences. Mike Pettry is New York-based composer/lyricist and music director. He is a 2007 Jonathan Larson Award winner, and his songs have been performed all across the US. His musicals include The Time Travelers Convention, Long Distance, World of Heroes, The Wonderful World of Zidney (featured highlight at Kennedy Center Page to Stage Festival), and Flipside (2007 NYU Frederick Loewe Award winner). Lila Rose Kaplan's plays include Wildflower, We All Fall Down, 100 Planes, Bureau of Missing Persons, Catching Flight, and Biography of a Constellation. Her plays have been seen at Second Stage, Arena Stage, The Kennedy Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse/UCSD and Chalk Rep, among others. Upcoming projects include a Studio Retreat of 100 Planes at the Lark, a reading of We All Fall Down at New York Theatre Workshop, and a commission for a brand new play from Launchpad at UCSB.

Success Boosters by Brent Evans

A Success Booster is any powerful Idea, Action, Strategy, Habit, or Tool That Increases Your Power to Achieve What You Want. We are now on Basic Life Principles.

Life Success Principle #3: Take Fifteen Minutes a Day to Order a Great Life. When we want to enjoy a great meal, we decide in general what kind of meal would best satisfy us, and then drive to a restaurant of that type. We sit down and take time to study the menu. We might ask questions from the waitress to make sure we make the right selection. Then we order what we expect to be a great meal. What about ordering a great life? That is why fifteen minutes a day of thinking and planning about life is so important. Without it, you just get from life what comes by chance instead of you ordering what you really want. Can you imagine a ship setting sail without a destined port and a detailed plan and map of how to get there? Fifteen minutes of planning and thinking time near the end of the day in preparation for tomorrow, or first thing in the morning before you start the day, will launch you and every member of your family to a great life. To order a great life you need to take consistent time for you to think about it, determine your resources, and what actions to take. Archimedes, the great Greek scientist of ancient times claimed that if he had a lever long enough and a place to stand, he could move the world. The fifteen minutes you need for planning and thinking time each day is your place to stand. It makes your success possible. Without it, you simply wander around probably never achieving anywhere near what you could have achieved if only you had a place to stand.

Each Day is Yours to Spend Only Once Life gives you twenty-four hours a day to spend. How much of it do you want? I hope you want all of it, but much can be carelessly wasted and lost unless you value it as your most precious resource. Queen Elizabeth centuries ago stated on her deathbed, My kingdom for an hour.

Do you value life? Then do not squander time, for that is what life is made of. (Benjamin Franklin) Nothing is more highly to be prized than the value of each day. (Goethe) Time flies on wings of lightning; we cannot call it back. It comes, then passes forward along its onward track. And if we are not mindful, the chance will fade away, For life is quickly passing. ‘Tis as a single day. (Robert B. Baird)

Don’t Depend on Luck Gather 20 pennies and look at their dates. Select one with a date you like, then place the twenty pennies in a bag and shake it up. The penny with the date you like represents the great life you want. Now, without looking, reach into the bag and grab one penny. That is about the chance of getting what you really want without goals and planning. Consider the Chinese proverb: The flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today. But what if you took no thought of the seeds you were planting and no plan to plant the seeds you really wanted?
