During his visit to the Pendle Community Radio

Studios with Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson &

other local party members, James Brokenshire

was introduced to the ELCAP (East Lancashire

Community Action Project) organisation and the

work of both ELCAP & Pendle Radio.

During the live interview on Awaz 103.1FM, James

said, “It’s great to be here in Pendle supporting

the Conservative MP for Pendle Andrew Stephen-

son. I wanted to come here to Pendle and talk

about immigration, a topic of great concern to

many people here in Pendle”.

In Burnley whilst speaking about the upcoming

General Elections in May 2015, Ed Miliband said,

"This is a big election. This is a big election for the

people of our country & it's a big election for peo-

ple here in the North West. I know the stakes are

incredibly high in this election.

The stakes are incredibly high when it comes to

low pay, to jobs, to small businesses, when it

comes to issues our country faces. What do we

need to do. We need to go out & fight for the

people we came into politics to represent. We

need to go out & fight for what we believe in".

On Sunday 15th March 2015, Pendle Community

Radio celebrated Mother’s Day with a special 2

hours radio show. Hosted by popular PCR

presenter Samina Hussain, the show featured discus-

sion on the role and importance of mother’s and a

special talk was given by respected guest from

Manchester, Hafiza Zunaira Amber.

Many of the Awaz 103.1FM listeners also shared their

thoughts about the day via telephone and many said

that mother’s day was to be celebrated today, tomor-

row and everyday throughout the year.

Hafiza Zunaira Amber said, “Mother’s day is not &

should not only be celebrated on one day. We should

celebrate mother’s day everyday, every hour, every

minute and every second”.

Mother’s are a great blessing and we should make it

our obligation to look after them, keep them happy and keep them smiling at all times.

Many listeners who no longer have their mother’s also participated in the show & echoed their sad-

ness & emotions of no longer having their mother’s with them. They told of the emptiness they felt

and the importance of not taking your mother’s for granted. We should always remember the status

of a mother and show them the respect they deserve.

Fellow presenters Rabia & Afsheen joined the Pendle

Radio team on the day & also participated in the show.

We pray that all of our mothers are blessed with a long

& healthy life and those mothers who are no longer

with us are granted a place in Paradise.

Over the last 8 months, East Lancashire Community Action Project(ELCAP) has successfully delivered a community engagement projectinvolving fitness & education with help from the East Lancashire Clini-cal Commissioning Group (CCG). Since the project commenced inAugust 2015, ELCAP has provided ICT skills & organised healthworkshops for the people of Pendle.

ELCAP took it upon itself to help the people of Pendle, in particular the ladies, to get fit after noticinga high rate of health issues within the area. It was important to educate and get them active.

A key aspect of the project involvedorganising a number of workshops inNelson & Burnley with the aim of inform-ing people of the various services availablefor them when needing medication or con-sultation relating to their medical needs.

All three workshops were facilitated byPendle Community Radio presenter ShakilSalam. The first workshop was held inBurnley for men. A further two workshops were organised in Nelson for females. One was held atthe Christ Church and the other at the ELCAP Offices. People attending the workshops were asked

what they did when they fell ill, had a cold or neededmedication. The majority responded by saying thatthey would always make an appointment to see thedoctor. Shakil explained that for minor illnesses, con-sultation or medication they could go to their localpharmacy or chemist and receive all of these services.

The project was a great success and all those whotook part appreciated & thanked ELCAP for theopportunity that the organisation provided to themand wished for the activities to be provided again.

I remember when I first went to London a long time ago; I contacted my friends in Lon-don as I looked at the underground map for the first time thinking how to use it. It hadmany codes for different routes to get from one place to another such as Piccadilly,Victoria and City Line. My first thought was to contact a friend to work out how theLondon underground maps worked. It took me a while to understand but now I can sayI’m an expert when it comes to taking the tube! As a frequent traveller I always lookforward to travelling on the tube - the fast paced life where you see many peoplearound you all the time from all cultures and walks of life, moving from one place toanother.

For many local people and tourists the tube is very easy to understand and is a part ofeveryday life. It’s the buzz of taking the fast tube, knowing that it can get you from oneplace to another in a matter of minutes. Even though the places may be very near andsometimes you may be able to walk to it but when you know the bus will probably takea while, you rather just take the tube. Recently I went to London and bought a zone 1and zone 2 pass for the tube. It was really good knowing that once I finished from oneplace I could just sit on the tube and get to the other side of London. You may even beable to see the next station from the station you’re already at but it’s the fast speed ofthe tube that helps you get from one place to the other in the quickest possible way.

For those who have sat on the tube you will realise people will be in their own little world. Some people may be sittingnext to you reading the paper, someone may be standing listening to their iPod; everyone’s quiet in their own little worldin such a fast tube. Funnily you become like them. You’re constantly just moving around to places, busy in your schedulethinking about where you will go to next. One thing I have realised is that over here in the North we are able to give wayto people coming off the train or the bus and the doors usually stay open for a short while; however, in the tube, I wasgiving way to other people and the next minute the doors closed!! They didn’t even wait for me to get in! I have learnt mylesson. If you can’t beat them, join them! Join the fast paced environment and just get out when you can otherwise you’llbe stranded!

Everyone is usually quiet and by the time you start a conversation which Iusually like to do, the next station comes along and that’s when you thinkit’s too fast. Anyway, I was going to meet a relative of mine who is a bankerwho had planned to take me to a restaurant. We met at Bond Street and hetook me to Edgware Road. The atmosphere was electric. Now that heworks in London it is hard to meet up now and then. That’s when it struckto me that time in the North is so much better when you want to relax. Hewas telling me how he had to sleep early and wake up early just for the nextdays’ work. It was amazing to find out what time his day actually started andwhat time it finished. For many of us, the day doesn’t start until 8am, unlikethe many others down South, the day starts at around 5.30am just for a 9amstart. I don’t know how they do it! It’s a very fast paced environment. Myfriend doesn’t even know his neighbour and he only lives in a flat!

Anyway, for myself I enjoy travelling to a fast paced environment especially in London city where we are moving from oneplace to another however at the end of the day, I do like to pause sometimes, sit back and relax and ponder upon every-thing that is going on around us. It is nice to work in a fast life however sometimes you have to stop and think about whatreally matters in life. After work I like to meet my friends, visit neighbours and the people in the community and link up formeals however if I was living in London I doubt I would be able to do all this. I feel lucky that we are in this balanced pacedlifestyle where we get a chance to do pretty much most of the things we like to. I have many friends who were born inLancashire who moved down to London and have now moved back to Lancashire; only because they missed the balancedlifestyle we have here in the North.

If you do go to London, visit the many lovely places. It’s full of history and sightseeing but I suggest you use the tube to getto places. It’s exciting and it’s a buzz! My advice is if you do get lost then don’t worry! Get an unlimited pass for the dayand you won’t need to worry about buying another ticket! You will eventually get to your destination. Anyway I’m going toput my feet up. It’s 6.30pm in the evening and it’s good that I can relax and take it easy, meet a few friends and see theworld go by.

Faz Patel MBE; Volunteer atPendle Radio.

More than 600 school children from 14 Lancashireprimary schools came together at a conference atthe Guild Hall in Preston on Thursday 26th Febru-ary to commemorate the Jullundur Brigade, aforce of British and Indian soldiers who fought anddied alongside each other through some of thebloodiest battles of the First World War.

The youth conference built on a visit to NeuveChapelle in northern France in October last year, which saw 100 soldiers, 90 Lancashire school chil-dren, 30 Army cadets and local religious leaderscommemorate the centenary of the first action ofthe Jullundur Brigade in the First World War.

Following that visit, the children involved havebeen working on a project, funded by the Heri-tage Lottery Fund, to research, write and design ateacher's resource book, to be used across theUK, about the role of the Jullundur Brigade andthe wider Indian Army during World War One.

Children from the participating schools gave pres-entations on their research into the Jullundur Bri-gade, on subjects including the histories of thethree battalions which made up the brigade, anoverview of the Indian Army and even the typesof food eaten in the trenches by British and Indiansoldiers.

The book will be available digitally for all primary

schools to download and used to help childrenunderstand the shared sacrifices of their Sikh,Muslim, Hindu and Christian forebears, whoserved and fought alongside each other during theFirst World War.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, CabinetMember for Environment, Planning and CulturalServices, said: "This project is a really importantreminder of the common heritage shared by somany of our communities, regardless of whereour origins may lie. The teachers' resource bookthat the children are producing will provide a last-ing legacy for the project and bring the lessons ofthe Jullundur Brigade's story of shared sacrifice toa much wider audience."

Brigadier PS Rafferty, MBE, Colonel of The Dukeof Lancaster’s Regiment, said: "The Jullundur Bri-gade was made up of Christians, Sikhs, Hindus andMuslims, which closely reflects the area where werecruit from now. Its history and its experiencesof people from different backgrounds, races andreligions living and fighting alongside each otherhave real lessons for us all today, not just the chil-dren involved in the project.

"The multicultural element of the war is oftenoverlooked, but we must remember that troopsfrom what was then the British Empire made ahuge contribution to the outcome of the war.

There were many Indian troops on the WesternFront, and we are immensely proud of our ongo-ing links with the battalions of the Indian and Paki-stani armies who are the heirs to our comradesfrom the First World War."

The Jullundur Brigade was part of the IndiaCorps, whose troops were among the first to seeaction on the Western front. The brigade wasformed in Jullundur (now Jalandhar) in the Punjabin 1912 from three battalions: the 1st ManchesterRegiment, the 47th Sikhs and the 59th Scinde Ri-fles (Frontier Force). The Jullundur Brigade wentto war on 23rd October 1914 and fought at theFirst Battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Givenchy, capture of Neuve Chapelle, the second Ypres,Festubert and the Loos offensive.

After some 15 months, when the Indian Corpswas moved to another theatre of war in Decem-ber 1915, the Jullundur Brigade, with the same

three battalions, were committed in Mesopotamiaand fought there throughout 1916 and 1917. In1918 they were transferred to Palestine to takepart in Allenby's final offensive.

These three battalions served together as part ofthe Jullundur Brigade for some seven years andthe great friendship and liaison which existed be-tween these three formations continues to thepresent day, with links maintained through theheirs to the three battalions, now respectivelypart of the British, Indian and Pakistan Armies, inthe form of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, the5th Battalion, The Sikh Regiment and the 1st Bat-talion (Scinde), The Frontier Force Regiment.

The Pendle Community Radio team was invitedon the day to interview the key people involvedand to learn more about the Jullundur Brigade.

The work clubs have been organised by staff from Lancashire Adult Learning. They offer advice and

People who attend the sessions will receive one-to-one advice from the tutor when they arrive to

help make the most of their time.

County Councillor Tony Martin, cabinet member for adult and community services, said, "These

weekly work clubs are set up in the heart of the community so that they are easy to get to. They
