The Idiot

Looking back on my childhood, I can recall many times when I was the one the kids in school would tease and pick on. Sometimes they would insult the way I looked, other times they just called me stupid because I didn’t think like the rest of them. It made for a very stressful day at school. I could hardly wait to get home and tell my parents what these morons had done today. Once, when I was explaining what these lame brained idiots had done to ruin my day, my father stood up and said, “If you can’t say anything good about someone, then don’t say anything at all”. Wait a minute! These guys were making my life miserable! That makes them morons, right? But my father pointed out that what I was saying about

them was no different than what they were saying about me. I hate it when he’s right. The other guys at school and I were caught in the middle of a slander battle, only I didn’t have the nerve to tell them to their face (Well, I was outnumbered you know). But just because I said things behind their backs or under my breath still didn’t make it right. I was still playing the game. I’d like to tell you that I stopped saying those mean derogatory things right away, but I didn’t. Even though I knew I shouldn’t, I would occasionally come home and fill my mother’s ear with what those miserable so‑n‑so’s had done today. And once again my father would remind me that if I can’t say anything nice about someone, then don’t say anything at all. Man, he was persistent! Where’d he ever find that? Was that something he just made up to aggravate my life? More than simply a quote from Bambi, dad said it was in the Bible. Great. Now he just referred me to a higher authority. So I started looking and found it, not word for word, mind you, but pretty close! In Colossians 4:6, Paul encourages the Christians back then, and even us today, to speak to others with a civil tongue. Why? Because you might just be able to win them over to Christ. Your speech should be building people up, not tearing them down. Also, in Romans 14:19-20, Paul encourages us to pursue the things that make for peace so that we can build each other up. No one should ever tear another person down, for any reason (a lesson I think our presidential candidates need to learn). I guess dad was right. As a representative of Jesus Christ, I should be saying good things about people; even if they are acting like an idiot. Oh no! I did it again!

Pastor Greg

“Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the

most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace,

seasoned, as it were, with salt, so that you may know how you

should respond to each person.” Colossians 4:5-6

Ahhh sleep.... Most of us have seen commercials on TV focusing on getting enough sleep. But did you know that it's possible (and fairly common) to get too much sleep? Studies recently released have demonstrated that there are "correct" amounts of sleep for various age groups. At these levels, the body functions at its best, but if we consistently get less or more of the optimal amount, the body processes begin to suffer. You may be one of the folks who feels good about being able "to get by" with minimal sleep. Although you may have trained your body to keep going no matter how much or little sleep you get, your internal body pro-cesses are most likely changing for the worse.

Young adults need about 8 hours of sleep, but for the average middle age adult, the "sweet spot" appears to be about seven hours of sleep per night. Consistently getting less than or more than the recommended amount can increase one's risk for health problems. It seems that too much or too little sleep increases calcium deposits in the arteries. Doctors have long been aware that during sleep there are many complex metabolic processes at work. These processes affect blood pressure, blood sugar, inflammation, brain function and weight.

Consistently getting less than 7 hours of sleep increases calcium deposits in the arteries and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. In addition it usually leads to weight gain and risk for diabetes. This lack of sleep tricks the body hormones into hanging on to fat calories instead of burning them for energy, therefore adding on pounds. The hormone disruption can occur after only 4 days of inadequate sleep.

But getting more than 7 hours per night can also cause an increase in calcium deposits in the arteries, resulting in heart attack or stroke! And, as hard as it is to believe, there are other reasons to avoid consistently over-sleeping. Too much sleep can impair brain function in adults and can also increase the risk of diabetes. Surprisingly, it also causes the same issues with heart disease and weight gain as lack of sleep! The lesson here is to be aware of how much sleep you regularly get. If you are a middle age adult and you generally get 7-7.5 hours per night, you are right on target to meet your body needs. If you are consistently getting less or more, you may want to look at ways to assist your body to get the right amount of sleep. It is way more important than you think.

Sleep requirements are a little different for children and older folks. Elementary age kids need 10-11 hours while teenagers need about 9 hours. Sleep isn't optional; it's imperative. Insufficient sleep in adolescents increases the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, risk-taking behavior, depression, car accidents, poor judgment, decreased ability to concentrate and poor academic performance. Additionally, consistently insufficient sleep can cause kids to be inaccurately diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. Adolescents will not willingly adopt appropriate sleep habits. This falls under parental insistence and intervention. Older adults need 8-9 hours, however their sleep cycles are often shorter and those 9 hours will occur in several segments throughout the day and night. Inadequate sleep in this age group can result in depressed mood, attention and memory problems, nighttime falls and general decline in quality of life.

Sleep ...the right amount, is a critically important basic requirement for life. Don't ignore your body's need for the right amount of sleep.
