Elastocoast®
Making our coastsand rivers safer.
Elastocoast®
As a result of global warming, experts predict that the sea level may rise by up to 100 centimeters in the coming years. Coastal communities are at risk from rising sea levels, surging waves and flooding caused by climate change. When the existing seawalls, breakwaters and revetments can no longer withstand the challenge of nature, the consequences will be catastrophic.

Elastocoast® is an intelligent polyurethane system with an open-pored structure that drains breaking waves of their destructive energy. While protecting the coasts and slowing the rate of soil erosion, the structure also provides favorable conditions for restoration of the habitat’s flora and fauna.
Thanks to its flexible Installation schedules, light equipment and simplicity of its application with usage of local aggregates, Elastocoast® is less environmentally invasive and expensive to install compared to other protection systems for coastlines.
An ideal revetment solution for coastal areas, river banks, river beds, lakes and even sea dykes, Elastocoast® can also be used for the protection of bridge piers, the lining of irrigation channels or protection from soil erosion in landslide-threatened slopes.
Coastal protection
Riverbed and weirs
• Porous and water-permeable• Low environmental impact• Reduces wave run-up and enhances coast-line safety
• Strong and resistant to weathering • Restores flora and fauna, protects neighboring habitats• Lower cost for construction and maintenance

Benefits
Elastocoast. Making our coastsand rivers safer.

The system involves the mechanical bonding of an aggregate (crushed rock or gravel) bonded with an environmentally compatible 2-component polyurethane plastic
Elastocoast® technology• The porous structure between the stones withstands heavy wave impact.• The cover layer also offers a habitat for flora and fauna.
Conventional technology• Rigid concrete structures can be broken down by wave impact, frost and ground subsidence.

Properties of Elastocoast®
Elastic and porous
• Available in liquid form, it can be stirred and mixed with aggregates on site and the finished mixture which is ready for use within 20 minutes can harden underwater. It forms a cover layer of about 15 to 30 cm thick on a dyke.
•
•
Open porous stable structure as a first line of defence to resist incoming waves, protect dyke by dissipating the impact of the breaking waves and slow down water masses, hence reducing the wave run-up.
Permeable system is an ideal solution for balancing the water pressure inside/outside dykes.
Ease of application
•
•
•Elastocoast® revetments need only 1.8% of binder, that means a binder level of 1/30 of that required for concrete or bitumen revetments.
Enhanced capability of reducing wave impact results in a thinner protecting layer and more cost-effective design of the whole structure, which leads to lower resources consumption.
Economical comparedwith conventional methods
Applied PU has no effect on the water quality and natural environment. It contains 50% renewable raw materials, with a natural porous structure that provides a cosy habitat for natural vegetation and marine life. It also integrates well into the landscape.

Elastocoast® revetment in Bathpolder, Netherlands
Hallig GrödeGermany
Protection of the revetment against scouring by wave impact.
Revetment was built by granite gravel (50/60mm) and Elastocoast® on gravel core and geotextile base.

Protection against erosion and wave impact.
By a length of almost one km the dyke is being covered with a 20 cm Elastocoast® layer. The type of stones used is recycled railroad ballast which is 30-60 mm. For this purpose the existing revetment, haringmanblocks, are being removed. The Elastocoast® revetment is laid on a geotextile.

Rebuilding the revetment alongside a beach near an abalone farm which was facing very high waves and damaged by a typhoon in 2011.
In 2012, the coast was hit by super-strong typhoons four more times. While existing concrete dykes and embossing dykes at the coastline were destroyed, the area where Elastocoast® was installed remained intact.
