Lenten Regulations
Each Catholic is asked to preserve the penitential purpose
and character of Lent, which begins Ash Wednesday.
Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent
and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat,
Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday until they
celebrate their 59th birthday are too fast on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday. Those who are bound to this regulation
may only eat one full meal. Two smaller meals are
permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to
one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not
permitted. These practices are designed for spiritual
growth. Catholics are not to excuse themselves lightly from
these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

Bishop Ricken scheduled to join us two to the evenings!
FROM FR. JOE This coming Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, our favorite Liturgical season! It is a time for taking
our freedom back. Through the discipline of extra prayer, fasting and alms giving, we ask the Lord to lessen our
attachment to the things of this world, so we can be free to pursue the things of the spiritual realm.
I would like to make a few suggestions. First, join us for Mass on Ash Wednesday. We even have a
6 a.m. Mass at Cathedral if that is the only time that fits your schedule. Giving up a little sleep can become part
of our fast the first day of Lent.
I also encourage you to join me for the Stations of the Cross every Friday. We begin at Cathedral the Friday after
Ash Wednesday and then alternate back and forth between my two parishes. This year Bishop will be joining us for two of
our gatherings! I would love to see our turn out top 150 every time. Last year, we were over 100 almost every time we
gathered. We will once again be using the ever popular Deacon Enzler reflections. Try to bring somebody who has yet to
experience this beautiful reflection, prayer and devotion.
There are many other ways to enter more deeply into the journey of Lent. Perhaps on Fridays a few of us could just
live on bread and water, instead of simply giving up meat. I also want to encourage as many of you as can, to consider
attending daily Mass at least once a week. There will be other spiritual opportunities. Just keep an eye on the bulletin.
Through the spiritual practices of Lent, may the Lord help us open our hearts to the new life of Easter! Fr. Joe

PRAYER CORNER Daily Examen
Step One- Stillness: Recalling God's Presence With the
start of Lent this week, it is time to begin the first of the
five steps of the Daily Examen based on the teachings
of St. Ignatius. Each evening set aside time to relax
quietly in God's presence thinking of His love for you.
Ask the Holy Spirit to come into your mind, helping
you look back over your day. If it seems a jumble, ask
for clarity and understanding. Do you see God's action
in your life? Were there people or activities that drew
you closer or further from Him? Talk with God about
the day, asking Him to help you see Him more clearly
in the events of tomorrow.

ADORATION FOR LENT!
The Church in Her Wisdom gives us the holy season of Lent each year to bring us closer to Jesus, to
remind us of the great price He paid for our redemption and salvation. These 40 days are intended to help us
reflect not only on the incredible sacrifice He made for us, but also on the wonderful blessing of having our God
present to us as we travel through this journey of life.
As we enter this most holy season of the year, we are called to draw closer to the Lord and encouraged to
do so through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and penance. We embrace this opportunity through various practices,
often times by abstaining from some favorite food or pastime pleasure. Beyond giving something up, this is a
wonderful time to participate more fully in the practice of our Catholic faith by embracing traditional devotions.
We are reminded that we are not alone. Jesus promised that He would not leave us orphans but would
remain with us until the end of our time here on earth. The Lord has fulfilled that promise manifested in and
through the life of our beautiful Catholic Church, particularly through our daily offering of the Mass and in
frequenting the Sacraments.
Our faith proclaims the Truth that Jesus Himself taught: He is with us, body, blood, soul and divinity in
the Holy Eucharist that we devoutly refer to as the Blessed Sacrament which we consume as Holy Communion
and worship through the devotion of Eucharistic Adoration. Jesus is also with us and ready to pardon our
transgressions in the Sacrament of Penance when we confess our sins.
As part of the rich heritage of our Catholic faith, we also have the opportunity to draw closer to our Savior
through the worship of His Body and Blood in the ancient devotion we lovingly call Eucharistic Adoration. This
practice, which dates back to the early days of the Church, is inspired by our Lord’s question to the Apostles who
were with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane on Holy Thursday night. They fell asleep as he suffered his
excruciating Agony; and Jesus asked them, “Could you not watch one hour with me?” From this, the early
Christians embraced devotion to Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, spending an hour with Him in
what became the practice we know today as a Holy Hour.
Here at the Cathedral, we are blessed to have the incredible privilege of being able to receive Jesus in
Holy Communion daily and to have several hours of scheduled Confession times available each week. We also
offer Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament every Wednesday and invite you to come visit our Lord, offering to
Him your worship, adoration, love, thanksgiving and praise. Come, spend time with the Lord to draw closer to
Him bringing Him all your cares, concerns, worries and fears to his healing touch.
I encourage you to make frequent use of the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confession, not only
during Lent but to incorporate them into your daily life throughout the whole year. Come also to visit the great
healer in Eucharistic Adoration to express your love for Him and offer thanksgiving for the many blessing and
graces He heaps upon you and your family. Make a commitment today to give yourself a brief respite from your
hurried schedule in a quiet hour of prayer each week. Come and adore our Lord who waits for you in the Blessed
Sacrament!
