¡LAS HUELLAS DE LOS PIES, QUE LLEVAN AL CIELO.

Estamos de fiesta porque este próximo 16 de octubre será canonizado, Joselito, el niño cristero, que fue asesinado, durante la persecución religiosa que sufrió México, bajo el régimen de Plutarco Elías Calles.

José Sánchez del Rio, nació en el seno de una familia profundamente piadosa, en Sahuayo Michoacán, México, el 28 de Marzo de 1913. El ejemplo de sus padres de amor por la fe y de su hermano mayor, quien tomó las armas para defender la Causa de la Iglesia, una vez que el gobierno empezó la persecución contra los Sacerdotes, le llevó a alistarse como voluntario asistente en el ejército cristero.

El 5 de febrero de 1928, tuvo lugar un combate en las montañas donde fue hecho prisionero al ceder su caballo al general para que éste se salvara. Y el 10 de febrero de 1928 después cortarle la piel de las plantas de los pies, y hacerlo caminar por más de un kilómetro hacia el panteón municipal, donde los soldados le pedían que renegara de su fe; cada vez que recibía una puñala da gritaba “Viva Cristo Rey

y Viva Santa María de Guadalupe”. El martirio duró horas, y momentos antes de que el general le disparara en la cabeza, le preguntó qué les mandaba decir a sus padres y, el niño valiente de 14 años respondió: "Nos veremos en el cielo. ¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!”.

Fue declarado beato por el cardenal José Saravia Martin en la ciudad de Guadalajara el 20 de noviembre del 2005. Y el 22 de enero de 2016, se aprobó el milagro por el cual se curara Ximena Guadalupe Magallón, bebé que tuvo meningitis, tuberculosis, convulsiones y sufrió un infarto cerebral.

The passage about Naaman’s cure from leprosy begins in verses earlier than those we read today. Starting at 2 Kings 5:1 we learn that Naaman is an esteemed and respected commander of the king of Aram. A new servant in his household, a girl whom the Arameans had captured from Israel’s land, wanted Naaman to present himself to the prophet in Samaria, who would cure him of his leprosy. Naaman speaks to the king of Aram, who provides a letter for the king of Israel, attesting to the desire for a cure.

The king of Israel, however, responds derisively. The prophet Elisha somehow finds out about the encounter and sends word to the king to send Naaman to him. Naaman, along with his cohort, arrives at the door of Elisha’s house. At the doorstep, Naaman receives the message from the prophet to go and wash seven times in the Jordan and his flesh will be healed. But Naaman balks, disappointed that the prophet himself did not come out to greet him, invoke the Lord’s name, and lay hands on him. Naaman’s anger leads him to turn away from Elisha’s home. He concludes that the God of Israel is no better than any other god.

Naaman’s disappointment, however, is not the end of the story. His servants intervene and help him to think logically about the situation, ultimately convincing him to follow through on the simple act of washing in the Jordan. This is the point at which today’s First Reading begins. The focus of the reading is not so much Naaman’s cure, but his confession of faith. Elisha’s refusal of Naaman’s gift in thanksgiving for the cure is also a confession of faith. It shows that those who serve the Lord are not in need of material gifts, because their life comes from the Lord God and is true gift itself.

At the end of the reading, Naaman requests two mule-loads of earth so that he can continue to worship God in his homeland.

SLEMS Students Combat Climate Change Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School students embarked on a first ever all middle school field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to kick off October’s school-wide service project focusing on climate change. M s . H a l e y H e m m spearheaded the planning for the trip to the Aquarium to give middle school students the opportunity to come face to face with the natural environments and creatures most affected by our changing climate.

While visiting the Aquarium, students participated in discovery labs about waves, energy, and coast line adaptation, explored the museum exhibits, and enjoyed waste free lunches brought from home. 8th grade students attended a special lecture on cephalopods (the class of ocean animals that include octopus and squid) and how their population has been impacted by human action including pollution, overfishing, and climate change as a whole.

Students returned from the Aquarium excited not just about what they learned but eager to start the service project back at school. “Like a small drop of water, I can send messages like ripples that expand to make a change…To stay in balance as a community, we all have something to contribute whether it be a clean-up on the beach or saving endangered species from oil spills,” commented one 8th grade student.

During the month of October, the 8th grade students will take on the role of educators and activists, leading the school community by teaching younger students the lessons they learned about water and ocean conservation while at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. “The students’ ultimate mission is to limit our carbon footprint, as individuals and as a community, by investing in education, inspiring action, and igniting young minds to change perspective and behavior,” says Ms. Hemm, who will be helping the students throughout this project. Through the preparation and presentation of their lessons, students hope to investigate ways and enlighten community members at every age on steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint.

Thank you all for your very generous assistance with the toiletries collection last weekend! We collected about 20 grocery bags worth of items for the migrant workers and homeless. We also collected $65 that will be turned into gift cards.
