ABSTRACT

Leucaena leucocephala contains an anti-nutrient called mimosin. Mimosin causes health problems in livestock. This experiment was carried out to study the reproductive performance of rats given 12 minutes of additional leucaena leaf flour. This experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments, namely commercial feed containing 7.5%, 15%, 22.5% leucaena leaf flour soaked as P1, P2, P3, positive control (P4 ) given commercial feed containing 22.5% dried leucaena, and negative control (P0) only given commercial feeding. Experimental studies were carried out on 50 male white mice for 30 days. Rats were sacrificed to take reproductive organs. Blood is taken before being sacrificed. Measurement of testosterone levels carried out by the ELISA method and the weight of the reproductive organs was carried out using an analytical scale. Data were analyzed by homogeneity test, One Way ANOVA, followed by post hoc Duncan test. The results showed that administration of leucaena leaf flour in male rats did not cause a decrease in reproductive performance.

INTRODUCTION

Leucaena leucephala •Available is always trhoghout the all

year-round, so in the dry season is used for foarge

• L leaf has crude protein value are 22.7%, so it is used as protein source, carotenoids, vitamins (A, K, B2), amino acids, minerals

Mimosine • The presence ot mimosine, causes

limited use of leucaena as forage • Leucaena induce alopecia and

goitre and also Decrease reproductive function

MATERIALS AND METHODS Experimental Design

Blood testosterone level

Reproductive organ weight

• testes, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate gland

MATERIALS AND METHODS Experimental Design The feed used in this study was a mixture of CP 551 commercial feed (PT Charoen Pokphan Indonesia) and Leucaena leaf meal. Five diets were formulated and designated as P0, P1, P2, P3 and P4

P0 = negative Control (no L leucocephala leaf meal), P1 = 7,5% L leucocephala leaf meal processed in fresh water, P2 = 15% L leucocephala leaf meal processed in fresh water, P3 = 22.5% L leucocephala leaf meal processed in fresh water, P4 = positive control 22,5% Air-dried L leucocephala leaf meal.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Table 3. Anti-nutrition and crude protein in Leucaena leaf meal

The chemical composition of ADLLM and FWLLM is presented in Table 3. It could be seen that the mimosine, crude protein, condensed tannins and phytic acid level were reduced by 74.24%, 3.48%, 22.76% and 67.8% respectively in FWLLM compared to ADLLM

Table 4. Mean level of testosterone in rats fed on different rations containing Leucaena leucocephala meal

The result of statistical analysis showed that the level of testosteron of rats fed on FWLLM were not significantly compared to controls but significantly different With treatment P4

CONCLUSION

Administration of soaked Leucaena leaf meal as much as 7,5%, 15% and 22,5% in rat feeds did not decrease blood testosterone level and reproductive organ weight
