We foster practicing expert professionals, educators, and researchers who willbecome able to discover issues independently and work on research anddevelopment for new treatments and methods of support. In so doing they willactively contribute to the improvement of health, medical, and welfare servicesbased on scientific thinking and an inquiring mind toward growth as specialists.

The Department of Occupational Therapy provides an environment withopportunities to learn how to conduct research. Students will expand their horizonsby looking back on their own experience and reconstructing their knowledge inoccupational therapy from a broad range of perspectives, including scientific, social,cultural and creative points of view. We also support students who are motivated tocarry out cross-sectional studies and international academic exchange, who make acontribution to occupational therapy in general or throughout health promotion,from clinical practice to community life. We welcome students who also have thepotential and willingness to endeavor acquiring a wide range of educational abilities,management skills, and who might become internationally active, whilecontributing to the creative development of occupational therapy.

[Master of Science program]Various basic researches deepen expertise, thus providing evidence foroccupational therapy practices. We prefer potential students with some researchexperience who are interested in a broad range of studies, from basic researchinvolving theories and experiments, and so on, to practical research for problemsolving in practice settings.

[Doctoral program]We look for students who will play a pioneering role from evidence-based research

on occupational therapy to conducting explorative research in anticipation ofdeveloping new insights. They shall have the motivation and ability to promote thepractical effectiveness and social role of occupational therapy from clinical settingsto life in society as a whole.

Holistic Occupational Therapy in Human Life

The purpose of this field is to conduct studies in subjects on the human body, mind,psychology, and development, as well as interdisciplinary and integrated research. Thisfield comprises a structure filled with motivation and imagination to create new researchon occupational therapy, education, and clinical practice, particularly from theperspectives of human psychology, activity, daily life, environment, and culture. We arerecruiting a wide range of researchers in the making who are motivated to establishevidence-based occupational therapy, who incorporate the development of mixedresearch methods, or qualitative and quantitative studies. They will contribute to thepursuit of a more enriched and open society and human nature. We invite you to join usin exploring the core of human beings.

Occupational Behavior and Occupational Science

Occupational behavior and occupational science are modern developments rooted inthe original ideas of occupational therapy’s founders. This study area concerns thedevelopment of theories that build on related philosophies, systems thinking, behavioralscience, narrative, etcetera. Further, studies pertain to exploring how occupationinfluences people’s health and well-being.This area is not limited to application to and producing evidence for the traditional

occupational therapy clinical practice areas, but also to expanding occupational therapypotentials to the building of communities where people can participate and experiencehealth through occupations.

Occupation and Living Environment Studies

For subjects to be able to engage in an occupation they truly desire, an approach to theenvironment is essential. The environments to be studied in this field encompass thephysical environment (including welfare equipment and tools), as well as homeimprovement, the human environment (including caring families and professional staff),the policy environment (including services and systems), the natural environment(including earthquake disasters and climate change), and the cultural environment(including stigmas and social norms). The mission of this field is to clarify how theseenvironments can interfere with or promote people’s participation in occupations, andto propose ways to enrich people’s lives.

- Study abroad -

Oxford Brookes University (OBU) TMU concluded an agreement with the Oxford Brookes University (OBU), Oxford England, in 2012 to promote internationalization, and our interactions have been continuing through education and joint research. Each year several of our graduate school students participate in a summer short-term training for global core human resources in the health care field at the OBU Department of Occupational Therapy. This program includes actual research discussions with OBU faculty members and graduate school students, and field visits to practicing occupational therapists in Oxford. In so doing students reflect on various aspects of their own studies from a different culture’s point of view, and develop skills for carrying out research from an international perspective. European Master of Science in Occupational TherapyThe ‘OT-Euromaster’ is a master's program of occupational therapy, which is headquartered in Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and is offered by five universities in Europe. In April 2017 an international exchange agreement was concluded making it possible to obtain credits towards our MSc degree in Occupational Therapy by following a Euromaster module at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), University of Brighton Eastbourne (United Kingdom), or Zurich University of Applied Sciences Winterthur (Switzerland). Short-term study abroad program Students at our master’s and doctoral programs can make use of the financial assistance program offered by Tokyo Metropolitan University to study abroad for three to six months. Recently, doctoral students have done so and engaged in research activities with professors at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) and Augusta University (USA). This made it possible to explore the student’s studies from a broader, international perspective and presentations at international meetings, and move forward with one’s career as a global researcher.

- Acceptance of international students -

“Tokyo Human Resources Fund for City Diplomacy” International Student Special Selection; From 2012 we are accepting international students from Asia for doctoral and master's program. In 2017, 4 students are enrolled. “Asian Human Resource Development Project for Medical Professionals” International Student Special Selection; From 2017 we will accept MSc students from Asia with research themes related to assistive devices. In the future, we will contribute to human resource development of occupational therapy. We have already established bridges between Tokyo and Asia, through collaborations with universities in Indonesia and Thailand.

- Exchange at the university-

Graduate school program ”Advanced Occupational Therapy”; Every year, we invite lecturers from various overseas universities and offer a very attractive opportunity to learn occupational therapy from an international perspective. Lectures are conducted in English. TMU-OT Graduate School International Seminar; This seminar is held for international students once a month. However, faculty and Japanese students who want to develop their international perspectives and presentation skills also participate.
