Award-winning Instructors Top Facilities Over 120 Workshops

our almost 50 instructors teach at theinternationally-renowned New BrunswickCollege of Craft and Design (NBCCD),edVentures’ principal partner.

Programs are available for learners 6 to 106,with most designed primarily for those 16years and older. Children and youthworkshops are also offered and coordinatedto allow parents to participate in edVentureworkshops, while their children safely enjoytheir own age-appropriate programs. Familyworkshops are open to anyone 16 or olderor open for children or youth ifaccompanied by a participating adult. Thisis an opportunity to discover together withyour child or grandchild, through aninteractive learning experience. Up to twochildren are able to take these workshopswhen accompanied by a parent orgrandparent who is taking part. Why nottake advantage of this opportunity to havean interesting experience that will creatememories to last a lifetime!

Workshops take place from 9 am - 12 noonand 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, unless otherwiseindicated. Lunch is on your own. Severalunique restaurants are nearby. Don’t missout on some great culinary experiences orgrab a bite outdoors and enjoy a leisurelywalk on The Green next to the beautiful St.John River.

Set in one of the country’s most beautifuland creative communities, edVenturesFredericton is Atlantic Canada’s largest andmost diverse vacation learning program incraft and culture.

The 2011 edVentures summer programfeatures over 120 intensive, small-groupfive-day weekday and shorter weekendworkshops. edVentures workshops run sixweeks from July 4 to August 14.

The edVentures program is located in gentledowntown Fredericton, where you’ll find theNew Brunswick College of Craft and Design(NBCCD) in the heart of the HistoricGarrison District, a National Historic Site.The college and its award-winninginstructors offer almost 40 workshops inedVentures, a program coordinated byFredericton Tourism. In addition to theNBCCD, our partners include theBeaverbrook Art Gallery, the University ofNew Brunswick College of ExtendedLearning, Kings Landing HistoricalSettlement, and the Charlotte Street ArtsCentre (CSAC), located in the St. Anne’sPoint Heritage Preservation Area.

Our summer program combines an easy-going and nurturing atmosphere, informallearning environment, top qualityworkshops, experienced and award-winninginstructors and well-appointed and oftenhistoric facilities. Unless indicatedotherwise, the workshops take place at theNBCCD.

First-timers to long-timers - Whetheryou are a trying something for the first timeor have quite a bit of experience and wantto learn a new technique, edVentures has aselection of beginner and intermediate levelworkshops from which to choose. Comejoin in the fun. No experience necessary.

We’ll weave that exceptional learningexperience into a rich tapestry with easy-to-make connections to our friendly peopleand an after-hours schedule of our CoolCulture offerings, live weekly concerts, andoutdoor films.

The edVentures program is centredprimarily in downtown Fredericton.The majority of workshops take place atthe New Brunswick College of Craftand Design (NBCCD). Withsawed-off paintbrushes on wood, you canpaint, drip, re-melt, wet-brush, dry-brush, puddle, stamp, scratch, scrape,and fill to get an array of effects. This willbe the primary focus of this five-dayworkshop, beginning with quick studiesof still lives under various lighteningconditions in black and whiteadvancing to colour, again using stilllives painted on prepared paper.Participants will then have theopportunity to draw from their ownsources of inspiration, using personalobjects and/or photos which will bepainted on medium sized canvasapproximately 20 x 16 inches. At thechoice of the participant, secondaryfocuses of the workshop may includethe use of preliminary sketching,composition, colour mixing, learninghow to prepare paper for painting andhow to make their own canvases.Gesture drawing and critics are anintegral part of each day’s work. Eachparticipant will have a small collectionof works on paper and two works oncanvas to take home.

Come broadenyour drawing technique with this five-day workshop. The first morning will bespent on experimenting with the pastelsto acquire the feel for applying thechalk on paper and achieving different

effects. Once the bare bones techniqueof applying the chalk is accomplished,participants will be introduced to colourmixing and blending. An exercise inexploring complementary colours willbe added to your knowledge.Participants will learn the do’s anddon’ts for enhancing black and whiteimages with colour. As in the pencildrawing course, participants will learnhow to apply pastel in abstracttechniques to change the image innumerous ways with respect tocomposition, contrasting tonal valuesand colour juxtaposition. At mid-week,participants will be introduced to aunique experience; tinting on black andwhite images with acrylic paints. Thistechnique was developed by Fitzgeraldand goes far beyond the old practice ofphoto tinting resulting in an image thattakes tinting to a whole new level.Bring along some meaningful photosand you may be able to create a one ofa kind keepsake.

patterns. The traditional batiktechnique, used on fabric but also onpaper, is today also applied by modernartists for making art works that havevibrant and deep colors. In this two-dayworkshop, participants will master theessentials of the batik technique.Participants will be taught the essentialsof the wax-resist dye process by initiallyusing rice paper to comfortablyexperiment and master the technique.After mastering this, using cotton orsilk as a medium, participants willcreate scarves, wearable art, or wallhangings.

Inthis half-day workshop, you will learnthe process of rippling, retting, braking,scutching, hackling, spinning, andweaving. Fitzgerald, LloydLloyd Fitzgerald has been aprofessional artist for about40 years. Alex Colville sawsome of Fitzgerald’s earlywork and suggested that hecontact the DominionGallery in Montreal. Theyexhibited his work there for24 years. He also exhibitedin Lucerne, Switzerland. Heis currently represented byBrison in Toronto and islooking to exhibit his workin New York. LloydFitzgerald’s work can befound in public and privatecollections in NorthAmerica, Europe, and theFar East.

Flecknell, OliverOliver Flecknell is a photo-based artist who specializesin alternative and mixedprocesses. His “delicatelycomposed and brilliantlyexecuted” work has beenshown in numerous groupexhibitions. The Gallery atthe New Brunswick College

of Craft and Design hostedthis graduate’s first solo showin 2007. Flecknell receivedan Arts New BrunswickScholarship in 2006 and theDuffie-Crowell Award in2007.

Forrestall, WilliamWilliam Forrestall has aBachelor of Fine Arts fromMount Allison Universityand continues to paint fulltime. He has exhibited innumerous solo and groupexhibitions in the Maritimesand Ontario. He and hisfather, Tom Forrestall, sharea fascination for eggtempera, but their workcarries no other similarity.Forrestall’s craft combinesthe natural beauty of flowersin bloom with the austerityof forgotten objects, bothanimate and inanimate.

Geurts, JaneWith a Diploma in CreativeArt and Design, and MED,Jane Geurts has been StudioHead of the Design Studio ofthe New Brunswick Collegeof Craft and Design since1982. She has lecturedinternationally and shownher work across NorthAmerica and theNetherlands. As a freelanceartist and designer, she hasdisplayed her work in bothgroup and solo exhibitions,and received variouscommissions. Geurtscombines paint and mixedmedia techniques and hasdesigned, taught, andfacilitated courses in theareas of mixed media, 2Dand 3D design, painting, anddrawing.

Gilbert, DrewDrew Gilbert is a multi-disciplinary designer whoteaches photography at theNew Brunswick College ofCraft and Design. Hisspecialties are handmadepinhole cameras and cameraobscura installations, whichhave captivated participantsduring his public lectures andworkshops. An archaeologistby training, Drew’s academicinterests include prehistoric

archaeological research inNew Brunswick, with anemphasis on stone tools andarchery. Drew is an expert inscientific archaeologicalphotography, and has taughtseveral workshops at theUniversity of NewBrunswick, where he iscurrently finishing a MastersDegree in Anthropology/Archaeology.

Grant, HannahHannah Grant holds a BA inBiology and English, a BScin Environmental Biology,and a degree in veterinarymedicine.

Guevara, MariaMaria Guevara holds aMasters degree inArchaeology and a Degree inConservation andRestoration of MobileProperties from the NationalSchool of Conservation,Restoration and Museologyin Mexico City. As aProfessor at the NationalSchool she has developedand taught Conservation andRestoration of AncientCeramics and Conservationof Archeological Objectscourses for undergraduatestudents. She has been aGuest Professor ofArchaeological Conservationat the University of Iowa inthe United States. She haspublished many articles and abook in conservation ofolmec ceramics from Mexico.Maria has also carried outresearch in petrographyanalysis as well as nucleartechnologies relative toconservation.

Hooper, SueSue Hooper graduated fromthe Georgian College inBarrie, Ontario and workedas an artist and designer forthe past 30 years. Hooper hasworked with the healingpower of art and currentlyworks part time as a teacherand manager of Art atHooper Studios in Hampton,New Brunswick. Hooper has travelled theworld, leaving her with a vastassortment of images andemotions relative to diversepeople and cultures. Whenshe established theorganization SUMO, shehand painted original designson cotton clothing. She wasselected by Jean Bradbury ofOregon to join a team ofartists who establishedPatchwork Planet, a women’scooperative, in Safi, Jordan.

Kelly, LindaLinda Kelly is a long time artinstructor, teaching drawingfor 20 years at the NBCCD.She holds a BA, a BFA and aMasters in Art Education.

Kennedy, MaryMary Kennedy began takinglessons in Tai Chi over 15years ago as a means toimprove her focus andconcentration, but sherealized that there were manymore advantages. Heroverall health improved somuch that she wanted toshow others the benefits.After initial training, sheadvanced to instructor levelin 1998 and began teaching.In 2005 she received officialCertification from theInternational Wu Style TaiChi Chuan Federation and isDeputy Chief Instructor atthe Fredericton Academy. Inaddition to beginner,intermediate, and weaponsclasses at the Academy,Kennedy offers private andsemi private to students of allages.

Lavigne, MauriceMaurice Lavigne, BA, RMT,D.Ac, Qi, has been studyingvarious aspects of universalenergy (Qi in Chinese – Ki inJapanese) via the martial andhealing arts for over 35 years.Maurice was first introducedto Qi Gong in 1996 during aworkshop given inFredericton, NB, by MasterYap Soon-Yeong of Malaysia.Maurice continued histraining for six years withformer Master Weizhao Wu ofToronto, Ontario. He is nowa student of Grand Master T.K. Shih of Conneticut, USA.Over the last 14 years,Maurice has receivedCertification in several stylesof Qi Gong as well asCertification as a Qi Healer.He has taught Qi Gong to anumber of New Brunswickgovernment Departments, andcontinues to teach classes andworkshops in Aikido and QiGong.

Leroux, JohnJohn Leroux has worked since1995 in architectural firms inToronto, Atlanta and at homehere in Fredericton. He haswon many awards for botharchitectural and public artprojects, and has pursuedvarious disciplines of designand cultural studies including:theatre/stage design, criticalwriting on art & architecture,

graphic art, and public art. Hehas published three books onNew Brunswick architecture,A Fredericton Alphabet(2001), Building Capital – AGuide to Fredericton’sHistoric Landmarks (2004),and Building New Brunswick(2008). In 1998 he curated alarge exhibition at theBeaverbrook Art Gallerycovering the entirearchitectural history of NewBrunswick. In addition toteaching at the NB College ofCraft and Design, John haslectured on design atConcordia University’s FineArts Department inMontreal.

MacDonald, AdamArtist Adam MacDonaldbegins his work with thestudy of landscapes. As heworks, narratives emerge andimages are manipulatedthrough various printmakingprocesses. Characters, real orimagined, are added into thefield of vision. The images arean exploration into the storiesof places and people.MacDonald teaches drawingand design at the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design.

McCullough, BettyBetty McCullough has 25years of experience as ateacher. She has taught

seminars throughout NewBrunswick and Nova Scotia,and continues to teach anaverage of 40 students on aweekly basis. She hasorganized painting retreatsand studied with artists acrossCanada and the US. Her style, “Altered Art”,learned in Fort Langley, BC,will be the focus of thisworkshop.

Meade, JoanJoan Meade is an art teacher,a storyteller and dramatist.Now retired from teachingart in the public schoolsystem, she teacheswatercolour workshops atStepping Stone SeniorCentre and also at theBeaverbrook Art Gallery.She has been storytelling(and painting!) all of her lifeand in the past twenty yearshas been a guest in manyStory Festivals across thecountry. She is well knownin the Fredericton region, inschools, has presentedworkshops for teachers,businesses and the public,and has shared her tales inCanada, Ireland, Japan, andCalifornia.

Mitchell, MelanieLocal designer MelanieMitchell graduated from theNew Brunswick College ofCraft and Design with

Diplomas in Surface Designand Fashion. She is now aninstructor in Foundation ofVisual Arts, Surface Designand Fashion at NBCCD. Aself-professed fabric snob,Melanie prefers to work withsilks, velvets and soft cottons.Through her designs, sheoften explores her obsessionwith color and texture,creating sensuous one-of-a-kind and ready to wearpieces.

Moller, KatherineKatherine Moller foundedthe NB Fiddle Camp in 2005and is currently the programdirector. She has beenteaching private and grouplessons for almost 10 years,was administrator for theUNB Music Camp and theNew Brunswick SummerMusic Festival in 2002 and2003. Her involvement ashead of the Leo Hayes HighSchool String Ensemble ledKatherine Moller to foundMoller Music, a privatestudio where she trainsstudents of all ages in fiddleand classical violin.

Musgrave, DeannaMusgrave was born inHalifax, Nova Scotia in1983. She graduated with aBachelor of Fine Arts(2005) from Mount Allison

University, obtaining thehonors of the “John P.Asimakos Painting Award”and the “Crake PerformanceAward in Fine Arts”. Sinceher graduation she has hadsuccessful solo exhibits atthe private gallery “IngridMueller Arts and Concepts”,was awarded theBeaverbrook Art Gallery’s“Studio Watch: EmergingArtist for 2007”, has two ofher works in the permanentcollection of theBeaverbrook Art Gallery,showed at the NewBrunswick Museum and the2008 International TorontoArt Fair. She has been alecturer across Canada forartistic conferences andteaches drawing andpainting at the universityand college level inFredericton, NewBrunswick. She also holds aBachelor of Education(2008) and Diploma inUniversity Teaching (2009)from the University of NewBrunswick, where she iscurrently pursuing a Master’sof Interdisciplinary Studiesin Fine Art and Psychology.Her research interestsinclude crossmodalintegration, synesthesia andvisual music.

Neilsen, GladysGladys Neilsen has taughtinternationally at variouspainting chapters, privatestudios, and conventions. Asa Certified ProfessionalDemonstrator (CPD),Teacher, and Juried Memberof the New Brunswick CraftCouncil, Gladys takesclasses often to study arttechniques and theory,

keeping abreast of what’snew in the industry. Sheaims to ensure the success ofeach student by inspiringtheir creative side andendeavours to make learninga relaxing and funexperience. She haspublished well over 100design packets distributedunder Village Designs. Herinstructional books, titledVillage Views, have all hitbestseller lists.

Norman, DorisDoris Norman is a skilledartisan and teacher, havingtaught rug hooking atschools and retreats in NovaScotia, New Brunswick,Burlington and GeorgetownOntario, Vancouver,Oregon, and at the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design. Doris is anaccredited Pearl McGownTeacher, USA and aTeacher of the Rug HookingGuild of Nova Scotia. She isa member of numerous rughooking guilds and hasexhibited her work at theBeaverbrook Art Gallery,Memorial Hall on theUniversity of NewBrunswick campus, the OldGovernment House ArtGallery, and the YorkSunbury Museum. Herexpertise in rug hooking hasbeen featured in publishedarticles for Rug HookingMagazine and variousnewsletters. She instructs allaspects of rug hookingdesign specifically Celtic,Jacobean, William Morris,and Pictoral.

Patterson, FreemanFreeman Patterson is ahighly acclaimedphotographer, writer, andteacher of visual design whohails from New Brunswick’sKingston Peninsula.Freeman began teachingphotography and visualdesign in the early 1960's inAlberta and commenced hisannual series of week-longworkshops in NewBrunswick in 1973. He hasalso given dozens ofworkshops in South Africa,New Zealand, UnitedStates, and Israel and hascompleted lecture tours inthe United Kingdom andAustralia. Freeman hasauthored a number of bookson visual design andphotography, includingPhotography for the Joy ofIt, Photography and the Artof Seeing, Photography ofNatural Things,Photography and the WorldAround You, and PhotoImpressionism and TheSubjective Image (co-authored with AndréGallant). His other booksinclude Namaqualand:Garden of the Gods,Portraits of Earth, In aCanadian Garden, The LastWilderness: Images of theCanadian Wild,ShadowLight, Odysseys, andThe Garden. He hasreceived numerous awardsfrom various countries and,in 1985, he was made aMember of the Order ofCanada.

Petite, SarahArtist Sarah Petite lovesencaustic paint, antiquity,and games. During hertwenty years of creation andexhibition across theMaritimes, she still considersencaustic paint herfavourite. Using ancientartifacts as well as modern,she incorporates theirsubjects and themesthroughout her artwork. Byreplicating archaeologicaltreasures through the paintmedium, she shares theexciting rediscovery ofremote times and places. Inher explorations, she foundthat games left their traces,too – in tombs, onpavements, and papyrusscrolls.

Sassani, RitaRita Sassani is a Fredericton-based artist who focuses onpainting with oil, acrylic andwax-resist dyes. Shegraduated from the NBCCDCollege, where she focusedon batik art. Her works areexpressive in nature,characterized by intensecolors, movement, andabstract compositions, andcan be found in variousprivate collections andgalleries. She has exhibitedher works in many solo andgroup shows both nationallyand internationally. She hasgiven multiple workshops onbatik art and acrylicpainting.

Scheffers, JulietteAfter Juliette Scheffersgraduated from the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design, she taught therefor two years. For the pastfive years, Scheffers has beenteaching and working fromher studio in Harvey, NB,where she specializes incrystalline works. Her potteryhas been showcased ingalleries throughout NewBrunswick.

Science East StaffScience East is NewBrunswick’s only hands-onscience centre, and their staffdelivers educationalprogramming all over theprovince. They haveexperience working inschools with both studentsand teachers, and also withthe public at numerous otherevents. Science East aims tomake science more fun andenjoyable for all ages throughtheir award-winningworkshops and science shows.

Sullivan, EricaErica Sullivan has a clearlove for nature. Owner of thebudding business “TerraInspirations Art Jewellery,”Erica designs and createsjewellery that is of the earth.After training at the New

Brunswick College of Craftand Design, and being theDirector of Summer YouthNature Camps for NatureNB, Erica is excited to shareher love for nature and artwith you! Her metalexploration has led toparticipation in travellingshows such as the MetalArts Guild of Canada’s“MAG and the Year ofCraft” and New BrunswickCraft Council’s provincialtour “Materialize.”

Szabo-Nyarady, ZsuzsaZsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady hasdegrees specializing inKinesiology, Education, andFine Arts. She is aMovement Educator andregularly lectures at theUniversity of NewBrunswick and St. ThomasUniversity. With over 20 yearsexperience, her certificationfor Pilates, dance and yogaenables her to teachstudents of all ages and aswell as professionals. Zsuzsaalso participates as instructorat conferences on a regularbasis.

Thomas, PeterCeramist Peter Thomas hasworked, studied, taught, andexhibited extensively inBritain, Canada and the

U.S. He holds an MFA fromClaremont Colleges inCalifornia and has served onprovincial and nationalarts/crafts organizations. Histalent has been used ongovernment and advisoryboards. For over 20 years hehas taught at the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design.

Tidswell, KathyFibre Artist Kathy Tidswellis a Juried Member of theNew Brunswick CraftsCouncil. She teaches forguilds and fibre arts groupsacross Canada, including theGibson’s Landing Fibre ArtsFestival in British Columbia,the Sewing and NeedleworkFestival in Ontario, and forthree Quilt Canadas. In2005, Tidswell received theCanadian Quilter’sAssociation Teacher of theYear Award. In order tohone her craft, she hasparticipated in manyworkshops, including anintensive painting on fabricand free motion embroiderycourse in the UnitedKingdom.

Venart, JoanneCostumer Joanne Venarthas been an instructor at theNew Brunswick College ofCraft and Design for the

past ten years. She hasworked for most of themajor theatres acrossCanada, and has heldvarious positions in theirwardrobe departments,ranging from Tailor to Headof Wardrobe. Her main areaof interest is in historicalcostume reproduction thathas led to contracts fromsuch organizations as KingsLanding HistoricalSettlement and the NewBrunswick Museum. Herartworks have been shownat the Beaverbrook ArtGallery.

Vose Jones, KimKim Vose Jones has been aprofessional artist for morethan ten years. She has been lecturer andguest speaker across Canadaand the United States forarts festivals, universityclasses, and in the publicschool system in NewBrunswick. Jones’s paintingsand felt creations have beenshowcased in solo and groupexhibitions across Canadaand the US. Her paintingand short story, The Dance,was credited as inspirationfor the Danse ArtemisDance Ballet Company; anexcerpt from her bookSirena and the Pull of theFundy Shore and somephotographic images of herfelted creations have beenpublished in Crow ToesChildren’s Quarterly inVancouver. She is a part-time lecturer in Fine Arts atSaint Thomas University.

Woolaver, EllenWhen Ellen Woolaver wasasked to help with costumesfor the Christmasproduction at theFredericton Playhouse, shehad no idea it would changeher life. That’s when shefound her passion and wentinto a career of costumedesign, first studyingHistorical Costuming atDalhousie University. TheUniversity of Calgary, theStratford Festival, TheatrePlus in Toronto, NeptuneTheatre in Halifax, andTheatre New Brunswickhave all benefited from herwork. Woolaver has taughtcostume and fashion designand is Studio Head FashionDesign at the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design.

Weber, VeitVeit Weber has beenpracticing meditation since1993. He has undertakenextensive training and beenappointed Shastri (seniorteacher) within theShambhala Buddhisttradition, by SakyongMipham Rinpoche, theHead of the Lineage. Veit isalso authorized to teachmeditation by theShambhala International.

WhiteFeatherWhiteFeather has receivednational recognition for hertextile-based work, in theform of numerous awardsand coverage in several artspublications in NorthAmerica. She has alsoshown in multipleexhibitions in the MaritimeProvinces and Toronto.WhiteFeather serves on theexecutive of CARFACMaritimes and GalleryConnexion and is a juriedmember of the NewBrunswick Crafts Council.She works as an instructorin many capacities, guidingboth children and adultstowards fulfillment in thecreative realm.

Wybou, DeborahDeborah Wybou has beendesigning and creatingjewellery as well as teachingthe art of silver wire andchainmaille jewellery for sixyears. Deborah’s jewelleryfocuses on the metal, andone of her favouritemediums is sterling silverwith or without semi-precious stones but she alsoworks with fine silver, gold,gold-filled and copper.Deborah’s education andbackground is diverse, shespent much of her life indesign, starting withclothing design in her teensand moving to homedecorating in 1991. Shereceived a Masters ofBusiness from the Universityof New Brunswick in 2004.Deborah has over 17 yearsteaching experience innumerous areas and is theowner of Antithesis Designs.

Adult & Family FriendlyWhile most of the edVenturesworkshops are designed for adults andages 16+, we also offer a number ofworkshops appropriate for children.Parents who would like to takeedVentures workshops can arrange safeand quality activities for their children.For a complete listing of workshops foryounger participants check out theYouth & Children category.

Age Limit: Adult classes requireparticipants to be a minimum of 16years of age or else are at the discretionof the instructor (for specialcircumstances only). All workshops foryouth and children have ageappropriateness indicated within thedescription. Family workshops are opento anyone 16+. These workshops alsoallow younger family members to takepart if accompanied by a participatingparent or grandparent. See the Familycategory descriptions for the minimumage requirements.

Cancellation Policy: If a workshop iscancelled for any reason, payment isrefunded in full. Please note, ifminimum numbers are not met for anyworkshop, we make the call to cancel aworkshop two weeks out so don't waituntil the last minute to register. If theparticipant cancels more than 30 daysfrom the start of the class date, paymentwill be refunded in full less a $25administration fee. If a participantcancels between 15 and 30 days inadvance of the workshop, half theworkshop fee plus the materials fee, ifapplicable, will be returned. If cancelingless than 14 days no refund will beoffered (the only exception being adeath in the immediate family). If aworkshop is completely filled and thereis a waiting list, the enrollment is non-transferable as workshop space islimited.

Class Size: edVentures workshops offerhands-on instruction in an intimatesetting. Most classes range from 10 to15 allowing participants to enjoy theopportunity to experience an enriching,learning environment. There is ampletime to have extra instruction and achance to get to know others in yourclass. Register early as most workshopclasses are small.
