edVentures workshops are taught by some ofNew Brunswick’s most recognized andaward-winning artists and artisans. Many ofour more than 50 instructors teach at theinternationally-renowned New BrunswickCollege of Craft and Design (NBCCD),edVentures’ principal partner.

Programs are available for learners 6 to 106,with most designed primarily for those 16years and older. Children and youthworkshops are also offered and coordinatedto allow parents to participate in edVentureworkshops, while their children safely enjoytheir own age-appropriate programs.

Workshops take place from 9 am - 12 noonand 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, unless otherwiseindicated. Lunch is on your own. Severalunique restaurants are nearby. Don’t missout on some great culinary experiences orgrab a bite outdoors and enjoy a leisurelywalk on The Green next to the beautifulSt. John River.

About edVentures Fredericton

Set in one of the country’s mostbeautiful and creative communities,edVentures Fredericton is Atlantic

Canada’s largest and most diverse vacationlearning program in craft and culture.

The 2012 edVentures summer programfeatures over 130 intensive, small-groupfive-day weekday and shorter weekendworkshops. edVentures runs six weeks fromJuly 9 to August 17.

The edVentures program is located in gentledowntown Fredericton, where you’ll find theNew Brunswick College of Craft and Design(NBCCD) in the heart of the HistoricGarrison District, a National Historic Site.The college and its award-winninginstructors offer almost 50 workshops inedVentures, a program coordinated byFredericton Tourism. In addition to theNBCCD, our partners include theBeaverbrook Art Gallery, the University ofNew Brunswick College of ExtendedLearning, and Kings Landing HistoricalSettlement.

Our summer program combines an easy-going and nurturing atmosphere, informallearning environment, top qualityworkshops, experienced and award-winninginstructors and well-appointed and oftenhistoric facilities. Unless indicatedotherwise, the workshops take place at theNBCCD.

First-timers to long-timers - Whetheryou are a trying something for the first timeor have quite a bit of experience and wantto learn a new technique, edVentures has aselection of beginner and intermediate levelworkshops from which to choose. Comejoin in the fun. No experience necessary.

We’ll weave that exceptional learningexperience into a rich tapestry with easy-to-make connections to our friendly peopleand an after-hours schedule of our CoolCulture offerings, live weekly concerts andoutdoor films.

illustration. Tracy is inspired by fantasy, steampunk, andbotanical themes, all of which can be seen in her work.

Bastin, ElizabethElizabeth Bastin has almost 25years experience in rug hooking.She is a member of numerous rughooking organizations, such as theRug Hooking Guild of NS, theHeritage Rug Hooking Guild,Evening Matters, and CathedralMatters, and the Fibre Artist’sGuild of Fredericton. In 1998,Bastin became a certified instructor

through the Rug Hooking Guild of NS and has taught coursesacross the Maritimes. She likes to teach beginners because oncethey try it, they’re usually ‘hooked’. She enjoys sharing herknowledge with interested persons and especially enjoys newhookers becoming engaged in the process of rug hooking.

Close, JoannaJoanna studied textiles atNSCAD University inHalifax Nova Scotia,completing her Bachelor ofFine Arts with a Major inTextiles in 2004. Shestarted her professional artpractice in 2004 andcompleted a Master of Artsdegree in Textile and Fibre

Art at the Winchester School of Art in the UnitedKingdom in 2006. Since that time she has lived and madeartwork in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and YukonTerritory. Joanna now teaches at NSCAD University inthe Textiles Department. Along with maintaining her artpractice, she also teaches workshops around the Maritimes.Joanna’s work involves exploring landscape imagesthrough textiles and drawing. Using rural spaces betweenurban centres as inspiration, Joanna mainly uses dyeing,weaving, screen printing, stitching and pen and ink in herwork. Heand his father, Tom Forrestall,share a fascination for eggtempera, but their work carries

no other similarity. Forrestall’s craft combines the naturalbeauty of flowers in bloom with the austerity of forgottenobjects, both animate and inanimate.

Gallagher, BronwynFibre artist Bronwyn Gallagher,a recent graduate of the NewBrunswick College of Craft andDesign, loves creating thingsand has a passion for weaving.Gallagher was selected as NewBrunswick's winner of the 2009Bank of Montreal nationalcompetition for graduatingstudents. Gallagher also

received the recipient of the 2010 Nel Oudemans Award asselected by the Strathbutler jury for her work in differentialshrinkage, in which the wool portion of the fabric is shrunkwhile the silk remains the same. Gallagher also received anArts NB Creation Grant for his work in this area.

Cole, BobbieBobbie Cole, whosebackground is in journalismand business, is currentlyfocussing on the final draft ofher full-length memoir: SheDoes Not Fear the Snow, atransformational journey tofaith. She has had a number ofshort stories published and hasreceived grants and awards for

her creative writing in her native U.K. She holds a post-graduate diploma in Creative Writing from University ofLondon’s Goldsmiths College and a Certificate in NovelWriting from City University, London. She has also receivedmentoring from the Humber School for Writers, Ontario. Herart studies include graphic design and textiles in London andat the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Bejewel was chosen as one of four NB companiesto represent New Brunswick at the 2010 Olympics and wasone of 26 Canadian artisan studios to represent Canada at thePhiladelphia Museum’s Annual Show and Sale during the2007 Year of Craft. Trudy has hosted a television show calledFashion-East-Ah for several years. She also teachesJewellery/Metal Arts at the New Brunswick College of Craftand Design.

Geurts, JaneWith a Diploma in CreativeArt and Design, and MED,Jane Geurts has been StudioHead of the Design Studio ofthe New Brunswick College ofCraft and Design since 1982.She has lecturedinternationally and shown herwork across North Americaand the Netherlands. As a

freelance artist and designer, she has displayed her work inboth group and solo exhibitions, and received variouscommissions. Geurts combines paint and mixed mediatechniques and has designed, taught, and facilitated courses inthe areas of mixed media, 2D and 3D design, painting, anddrawing.

Gilbert, DrewDrew Gilbert is a multi-disciplinary researcher /designer who teachesphotography at the NewBrunswick College of Craft andDesign. His specialties arehandmade pinhole camerasand camera obscurainstallations, which havecaptivated participants during

his public lectures and workshops. An archaeologist bytraining, Drew’s academic interests include prehistoricarchaeological research in New Brunswick, with an emphasison stone tools and archery. Drew is an expert in scientificphotography, and has taught several workshops at theUniversity of New Brunswick.

Guevara, MariaMaria Guevara holds a Mastersdegree in Archaeology and aDegree in Conservation andRestoration of MobileProperties from the NationalSchool of Conservation,Restoration and Museology inMexico City. As a Professor atthe National School she hasdeveloped and taught

Conservation and Restoration of Ancient Ceramics andConservation of Archeological Objects courses forundergraduate students. She has been a Guest Professor ofArchaeological Conservation at the University of Iowa in theUnited States. She has published many articles and a book inconservation of olmec ceramics from Mexico. Maria has alsocarried out research in petrography analysis as well as nucleartechnologies relative to conservation.

Hooper, SueSue Hooper graduated from theGeorgian College in Barrie,Ontario and worked as an artistand designer for the past 30years. Hooper has worked withthe healing power of art andcurrently works part time as ateacher and manager of Art atHooper Studios in Hampton,New Brunswick.

Hooper has travelled the world, leaving her with a vastassortment of images and emotions relative to diverse peopleand cultures. When she established the organization SUMO,she hand painted original designs on cotton clothing. She wasselected by Jean Bradbury of Oregon to join a team of artistswho established Patchwork Planet, a women’s cooperative, inSafi, Jordan.

Kennedy, MaryMary Kennedy began takinglessons in Tai Chi over 15years ago as a means toimprove her focus andconcentration, but she realizedthat there were many moreadvantages. Her overall healthimproved so much that shewanted to show others thebenefits. After initial training,

she advanced to instructor level in 1998 and began teaching.In 2005 she received official Certification from theInternational Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Federation and isDeputy Chief Instructor at the Fredericton Academy. Inaddition to beginner, intermediate, and weapons classes at theAcademy, Kennedy offers private and semi private to studentsof all ages.

Lavigne, MauriceMaurice Lavigne, BA, RMT,D.Ac, Qi, has been studyingvarious aspects of universalenergy (Qi in Chinese – Kiin Japanese) via the martialand healing arts for over 35years. Maurice was firstintroduced to Qi Gong in1996 during a workshopgiven in Fredericton, NB, by

Master Yap Soon-Yeong of Malaysia. Maurice continuedhis training for six years with former Master Weizhao Wuof Toronto, Ontario. He is now a student of Grand MasterT. K. Shih of Conneticut, USA. Over the last 14 years,Maurice has received Certification in several styles of QiGong as well as Certification as a Qi Healer. He has taughtQi Gong to a number of New Brunswick governmentDepartments, and continues to teach classes and workshopsin Aikido and Qi Gong.

Leroux, JohnJohn Leroux has worked since1995 in architectural firms inToronto, Atlanta and at homehere in Fredericton. He has wonmany awards for botharchitectural and public artprojects, and has pursued variousdisciplines of design and culturalstudies including: theatre/stagedesign, critical writing on art &

architecture, graphic art, and public art. He has published sixbooks on New Brunswick architecture, including “BuildingCapital – A Guide to Fredericton’s Historic Landmarks”,“Building New Brunswick, an architectural history”, and hismost recent “Glorious Light: the stained glass of Fredericton”.In 1998 he curated a large exhibition at the Beaverbrook ArtGallery covering the entire architectural history of NewBrunswick. Musgrave, DeannaMusgrave was born in Halifax,Nova Scotia in 1983. Shegraduated with a Bachelor ofFine Arts (2005) from MountAllison University, obtaining thehonors of the “John P. AsimakosPainting Award” and the “CrakePerformance Award in FineArts”. Since her graduation shehas had successful solo exhibits

at the private gallery “Ingrid Mueller Arts and Concepts”, wasawarded the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s “Studio Watch:Emerging Artist for 2007”, has two of her works in thepermanent collection of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, showedat the New Brunswick Museum and the 2008 InternationalToronto Art Fair. She has been a lecturer across Canada forartistic conferences and teaches drawing and painting at theuniversity and college level in Fredericton, New Brunswick.She also holds a Bachelor of Education (2008) and Diploma inUniversity Teaching (2009) from the University of NewBrunswick, where she is currently pursuing a Master’s ofInterdisciplinary Studies in Fine Art and Psychology. Patterson, FreemanFreeman Patterson is a highlyacclaimed photographer,writer, and teacher of visualdesign who hails from NewBrunswick’s KingstonPeninsula. Freeman beganteaching photography andvisual design in the early1960's in Alberta andcommenced his annual series

of week-long workshops in New Brunswick in 1973. He hasalso given dozens of workshops in South Africa, NewZealand, United States, and Israel and has completed lecturetours in the United Kingdom and Australia. Freeman hasauthored a number of books on visual design andphotography, including Photography for the Joy of It,Photography and the Art of Seeing, Photography of NaturalThings, Photography and the World Around You, and PhotoImpressionism and The Subjective Image (co-authored withAndré Gallant). His other books include Namaqualand:Garden of the Gods, Portraits of Earth, In a CanadianGarden, The Last Wilderness: Images of the Canadian Wild,ShadowLight, Odysseys, and The Garden. He has receivednumerous awards from various countries and, in 1985, he wasmade a Member of the Order of Canada.

Pazienza, JenniferJennifer Pazienza has been anart educator for 30 years andhas taught students rangingfrom kindergarten throughuniversity. She has presentedpapers and workshops atnational andinternational conferences aswell as publishing articles onteaching art. As a volunteer,

she has supported local arts committees and juries. Mostrecently, she served at artist and educator in residence for theBeaverbrook Art Gallery. In a consulting capacity, Pazienzaprovided assistance for the Getty Centre for Arts inEducation and for the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan. Dr. Pazienzateaches art education in the Faculty of Education for UNB.Her artwork has been exhibited and collected in Canada, theUnited States, and Italy.

Petite, SarahArtist Sarah Petite loves twothings best, encaustic paint andthe classic board games. Aseries of painted "games thatplay" (complete with tokensand dice) from years past hasgerminated a recent group ofabstract paintings called"Game Theory". With chess,pachisi, backgammon and

mancala boards as a starting point, these works reflect on thestrategies we use to maneuver our way through life. Petite hasshown her work around the Maritimes, and shared her ideaswith many others in classes and workshops.

Scheffers, JulietteAfter Juliette Scheffersgraduated from the NewBrunswick College of Craftand Design, she taught therefor two years. For the past fiveyears, Scheffers has beenteaching and working from herstudio in Harvey, NB, whereshe specializes in crystallineworks. Her pottery has been

showcased in galleries nationally and internationally.

Szabo-Nyarady, ZsuzsaZsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady hasdegrees specializing inKinesiology, Education, andFine Arts. She is a MovementEducator and regularly lecturesat the University of NewBrunswick and St. ThomasUniversity. With over 20 years ofexperience, her certification for

Pilates, dance and yoga enables her to teach students of allages and as well as professionals. Zsuzsa also participates asinstructor at conferences on a regular basis.

Taylor, StephenStephen Taylor has extensiveexperience in the art andbusiness world. Born inScotland, Stephen completed afive-year apprenticeship as afurrier in Glasgow. In 1973,Stephen immigrated toNewfoundland and establisheda successful fashion retail andmanufacturing business, while

gaining skills in computer technology. He moved toFredericton, NB in 1997 and while teaching business andcomputer assisted design for textiles at the New BrunswickCollege of Craft and Design, completed a Bachelor ofEducation and a Master’s degree, Interdisciplinary Studies. Hecontinues to work as a textile/leather designer and contractorfor e-learning course and software development.

Thomas, PeterCeramist Peter Thomas hasworked, studied, taught, andexhibited extensively inBritain, Canada and the U.S.He holds an MFA fromClaremont Colleges inCalifornia and has served onprovincial and nationalarts/crafts organizations. Histalent has been used on

government and advisory boards. For over 20 years he hastaught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Tidswell, KathyKathy, a quilter, fibre artist,and instructor, has beenteaching throughout Canadaand selling fibre art for over 18years. She will be a facultymember at a Quilt Canada forthe fourth time in June 2011.In 2005 she was honoured asthe Canadian Quilters’Association/ACC Teacher of

the Year. Kathy’s work has been accepted into GrandNational Juried Quilt Exhibitions, Canadian Quilters’Association/ACC National Juried Shows and The OntarioNetwork of Needleworkers: Threadworks 2010. Her wearableart received the Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACCNational Juried Show Award of Excellence in 1999 andHonourable Mention in 2005. Her award winning work hasbeen published nationally and internationally.

Venart, JoanneCostumer Joanne Venart hasbeen an instructor at the NewBrunswick College of Craft andDesign for the past ten years.She has worked for most of themajor theatres across Canada,and has held various positionsin their wardrobe departments,ranging from Tailor to Head ofWardrobe. Her main area of

interest is in historical costume reproduction that has led tocontracts from such organizations as Kings Landing HistoricalSettlement and the New Brunswick Museum. Her artworkshave been shown at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Vose Jones, KimKim Vose Jones is a sculptor,installation artist, lecturer andwriter. Vose Jones' artwork andwritings have been featured ingalleries, journals, cataloguesand an art textbook. Shestudied glass blowing at AlfredUniversity in New York andearned a BA from ConcordiaUniversity in Montreal and anMFA from Maine College of

Art in Portland Maine. Kim is the recipient of 2010 CharlotteGlencross Award, an ArtsNB Creation Grant and fourArtsNB Professional Development Grants, as well as MECADean's Scholarship and President's Award. Most recently shewas named the 2011 Studio Watch: Emerging Artist by theBeaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton.

Weber, VeitVeit Weber has been practicingmeditation since 1993. He hasundertaken extensive trainingand been appointed Shastri(senior teacher) within theShambhala Buddhist tradition,by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche,the Head of the Lineage. Veit isalso authorized to teachmeditation by the ShambhalaInternational.

Woolaver, EllenWhen Ellen Woolaver wasasked to help with costumes forthe Christmas production atthe Fredericton Playhouse, shehad no idea it would changeher life. That’s when she foundher passion and went into acareer of costume design, firststudying Historical Costumingat Dalhousie University. The

University of Calgary, the Stratford Festival, Theatre Plus inToronto, Neptune Theatre in Halifax, and Theatre NewBrunswick have all benefited from her work. Woolaver hastaught costume and fashion design and is Studio HeadFashion Design at the New Brunswick College of Craft andDesign.

Wybou, DeborahDeborah Wybou has beendesigning and creatingjewellery as well as teachingthe art of silver wire andchainmaille jewellery for sixyears. Deborah’s jewelleryfocuses on the metal, and oneof her favourite mediums issterling silver with or withoutsemi-precious stones but she

also works with fine silver, gold, gold-filled and copper.Deborah’s education and background is diverse, she spentmuch of her life in design, starting with clothing design in herteens and moving to home decorating in 1991. She received aMasters of Business from the University of New Brunswick in2004. Deborah has over 17 years teaching experience innumerous areas and is the owner of Antithesis Designs.

Adult & Family FriendlyWhile most of the edVenturesworkshops are designed for adults andages 16+, we also offer a number ofworkshops appropriate for children andyouth. Parents who would like to takeedVentures workshops can arrange safeand quality activities for their children.For a complete listing of workshops foryounger participants check out theYouth & Children category.

Age Limit: Adult classes requireparticipants to be a minimum of 16years of age or else are at the discretionof the instructor (for specialcircumstances only). All workshops foryouth and children have ageappropriateness indicated within thedescription.

Cancellation Policy: If a workshop iscancelled for any reason, payment isrefunded in full. Please note, ifminimum numbers are not met for anyworkshop, we make the call to cancel aworkshop seven days out so don't waituntil the last minute to register. If theparticipant cancels more than 30 daysfrom the start of the class date, paymentwill be refunded in full less a $25administration fee. If a participantcancels between 15 and 30 days inadvance of the workshop, half theworkshop fee plus the materials fee, ifapplicable, will be returned. If cancelingless than 14 days no refund will beoffered (the only exception being adeath in the immediate family). If aworkshop is completely filled and thereis a waiting list, the enrollment is non-transferable as workshop space islimited.

Class Size: edVentures workshops offerhands-on instruction in an intimatesetting. Most classes range from 10 to15 allowing participants to enjoy theopportunity to experience an enriching,learning environment. There is ampletime to have extra instruction and achance to get to know others in yourclass. Register early as most workshopclasses are small.

Facilities: The majority of workshopstake place at the New BrunswickCollege of Craft and Design unless
