“A constituency able and willing to fight for the long-term human prospect must be educated into
existence. It must be scientifically literate enough to recognize politicized science for what it is. It must be
courageous enough to face fact squarely. It must be committed enough to avoid the seductions of cheap
citizenship.” David Orr

Children and Youth Programs
The Children & Youth program team engages with
over 10,000 children, youth and their families in
marine science annually through a diverse suite of
educational programs including camps, clubs,
sleepovers and birthday parties.
Our programs embrace nature play, innovative
science and research, art and hands on experiences to foster a love
of our natural world. Children and Youth program content connects
to New Orgs direct action and research initiatives and advance
participants along the conservation continuum.
In addition, our team of educators is passionate about inspiring the next generation of young leaders and mentors with over 200 youth through our youth camps and work experience volunteer placements each year. This position is supported by established and accepted social science that attributes ‘a significant experience in a pristine environment as a youth’ as the most common denominator amongst adults with a caring concern for the environment.
Priorities
Camps – Consolidate and build capacity including developing AquaCamp collaboration beyond the VAMSC site.
Birthdays / Sleep overs – Consolidate and build capacity including career development for staff.
Learning Journeys – Develop the first multiday immersive programs for teenagers.
Youth Development (YELP++) – Expand and develop collaboratively funded early career program.

Curriculum Programs
Curriculum Programs engage over 20,000
students per year in inquiry based learning and is
led by group of professional educators and
biologists.
The team is made of core staff who train and
work with over 200 volunteers from the
community, along with high school work experience students,
teachers in training on practicum assignment, and co-op students
from universities. Programs are primarily delivered in our
AquaQuest learning labs.
We construct understanding with students to create in depth
learning, as well as personal emotional experiences with marine life and their ecosystems. Experiences for students are
focused through the prescribed learning outcomes of the BC provincial curriculum.
Curriculum program content connects to New Orgs direct action and research initiatives and advance participants along
the conservation continuum.
Priorities

habitats and encourage the discovery of
connections between animals, environments
and ourselves.
Our Educators deliver multi-sensory aquatic
programs, featuring live animals, artifacts and activities in schools
and communities both in BC and across Canada.
School programs supplement school curriculum for K - 12, satisfying a wide range of the Learning Outcomes.
Mobile program content connects to New Orgs direct action and research initiatives and advance participants along the

Service Learning (GCSC)
The Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup is a collaboration between
WWF Canada and New Org. It
encourages all Canadians to pick up
litter at their local shoreline to
protect wildlife.
Cleanups take place anywhere land connects to water, including
rivers, lakes and beaches. Cleanups are coordinated by volunteers,
who also engage in citizen science and collect information about
the litter they find.
Our team recruits and supports volunteers in every territory and province, with the goal of keeping Canadian shorelines
free of litter. www.shorelinecleanup.ca
Service Learning program content connects to New Orgs other direct action and research initiatives and advance
participants along the conservation continuum.
Priorities
New Org and WWF have agreed to greatly expand this program over the next three years, aiming to increase
participation from 75k to 500k per year.
Public – Bilingual Website renewal
Schools / Youth – In partnership with Mobile Programs deliver Connecting Communities to Coastlines

Public Programs
Public Programs offers participants opportunities
to further their knowledge and explore their
curiosity of the ocean directly with ocean experts
and move participants along the conservation
continuum.
Our keystone is the Aquatic Café, where
conversations about the ocean take place both at VAMSC and
through partners beyond Vancouver.
Public Programs often include a digital component that allows
people from anywhere in the world to learn about and engage with
New Orgs research and direct action programs such as Marin
Mammal Rescue, Sustainable Seafood and climate and ecology issues.
Public Programs also leads key external collaboration programs such as Bio blitz, where participants and experts explore
nature together and contribute to the global movement for ocean conservation.
Priorities
Aquatic Café – National focus, expanding our reach and building credence as a global voice for Ocean Conservation.
Ocean Events Calendar – Establish and maintain a national and international public calendar for New Org and beyond.
Collaboration Programs
Bio Blitz – Scientific species inventories in the Arctic and Howe Sound, Public Engagement program in Vancouver.
International Conferences – WEEC, CNN2017

Online Learning
As both a legacy of the inaugural Canada 150 AquaVan National Tour and as a flagship initiative of New Org the Education department will launch our Online Learning Environment in April 2017. The platform will showcase contemporary online learning activities in a format that supports student learning at their own pace, in their own place and in collaboration with each other. Pprogram content will
connect to New Orgs direct action and research initiatives and advance participants along the conservation continuum. By integrating digital resources and user generated content within carefully structured curriculum. We will prepare students to better understand ocean literacy, by creating opportunities for them to learn in an authentic, multilingual social context with their peers throughout Canada and the world. Ocean Literacy - Multilingual Learning Platform incorporating;
Assignments & Badges Discussion Threads & Posts Resources (Bookmarks and Files) Gallery (Photos & Media) Blogs and Writing Maps & Quizzes Video Conferencing for live learning sessions
Ocean Action
Service Learning; Shoreline Cleanup + Sustainable Seafood + Wild Whales Cetaceans sightings + iNaturalist By integrating the Commit2Act app as a bridge to our established programs we will create an easy way for students and classrooms to discover and track actions that reduce their impact on the planet. Thus encouraging broader awareness and participation in these actions. Social Learning: Virtual Town Halls New Org. will work with CGE and TIG to develop annual national and international Virtual Town Halls on conservation of ocean and aquatic environments. Complementing the success of our Ikaarvik: Barriers to Bridges Program New Org. will be a Featured content provider for Connected North a program, facilitating virtual dialogue to schools serving primarily Indigenous populations across Canada’s remote northern communities. Oceans Tomorrow; Ocean Hackathon-Incubator We will facilitate a three-day Hackathon at the Vancouver Aquarium to expose up to 100 students to the challenges and
priorities around ocean conservation, engaging them in developing proposed solutions. Select youth will then be
offered space at the Aquarium and seed grants to develop their projects further.
